My name is Ben Sugg and I am your new academic advisor and transfer specialist. I have recently come to Cascadia Community College and the Metro Seattle area from my former position at Pellissippi State Community College and hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. It is my hope that you are all as glad to be here in the amazing Pacific Northwest as I am. Annual Students of Color Conference The Center for Culture, Inclusion, and Community “ The Center” is accepting applications for the 24th Annual Students of Color Conference. The conference theme is “ I AM, Living Social Justice thought Creative Resistance”. The conference will be held in Yakima, WA from Thursday, April 17 through Saturday, April 19, 2014. Last year the Students of Color Conference brought together over 750 students from community colleges across the state to discuss topics that included: - ethnic and racial identity development - academic success - skills for promoting social justice - intercultural communication The goal of the conference is to support Washington State Community and Technical College students to become more active proponents of their own education, life choices, and expand the opportunities and possible for students to become agents of change. All registration costs, accommodations, and transportation will be covered by “The Center” for those who are selected to attend. Everyone is welcome to apply. Cascadia International Programs Newsletter Jan. 27, 2014 Message from our former Cascadia international student who now studies at UW Seattle: “CulturalFest” at UW welcomes Cascadia International Students CulturalFest is an annual celebration that welcomes thousands of globally-minded visitors of all ages and backgrounds to the University of Washington Seattle for cultural exploration and learning. Visitors enjoy free cultural exhibitions during the day on Friday, February 7 in the HUB. On Saturday, February 8, join us for the Performance Showcase at the University of Washington's Meany Hall, featuring performance art from all over the world as well as an opportunity to support FIUTS cultural and educational programs by attending the reception and silent auction. For the students that are interested in coming and want to get a student discount we will put them on a list for 'Will Call' so they can go to the box office and give their name and then only pay $10 to get in. New English Tutor Available for International Students at Writing Center The Writing Center has hired a tutor who specializes in working with ESL and ELP students. His name is John D’Ambrosia. John will be working with all students visiting the Writing Center, but we brought him in specifically to work with English Language learners. His winter quarter Writing Center hours are: Tuesday 1:30-3:00 Wednesday 12:00-2:00 Thursday 1:30-3:00 Friday 12:00-3:00 Students can schedule an appointment with John during these hours by stopping by the Writing Center In CC2-080 or by calling the center at 425-352-8016. The Writing Center also allow students to drop-in, but cannot guarantee any tutor’s availability without an appointment and wait times can be significant when it is busy.
