Goal Add s to nouns to show possession Vocabulary boy’s girl’s sister’s brother’s mother’s father’s friend’s family’s bug’s bike dog pet color bed Materials Needed Book “Bo and the Grasshopper” Toys and objects Direct Instructions Use “teachable moments” to model the possessive noun –‘s. For example, when going on a walk, you may state what you see “Cool, I see the girl’s bike”. Elicit a possessive form by asking “Whose bike do you see?” While handing out supplies, equipment or toys, model the possessive noun –‘s while stating who the items belong to. For example, “This is a girl’s bike.” “This is the teacher’s coat.” Read the story “Bo and the Grasshopper”. The first time reading the story, ask the student to find out who things belong to. Read the story again and have the student focus on the possessive noun form –‘s. If they have difficulty finding the possessive noun form –‘s, model the sentence and have them try again. Differentiated Instructions Connect the device to the computer using a USB cable or Blue Tooth module. Let the student practice writing the target vocabulary words into a word document. Read the story again and have the student write the target phrases on the computer. Print out the words to use on a word wall or make them into flash cards. Use this book as a template for the student to write their own story using their favorite animal, photos of classmates or themselves. Using computer emulation or a white board, have the student write lists of items that a group needs to take to a specific location. For example while feeding a class pet, state “I have the rabbit’s food” and follow up with a starter sentence “this is the….” while expecting the student to complete the statement. Use toy animals along with other items. Pull items out of a box. As each item is being pulled out, have the student state to whom the item belongs to (ie. dog’s ball, cow’s cup). Have the student pass out classroom supplies, toys and other items while stating either who it belongs to or if it belongs to a boy or girl. For example, the student can direct other students coming up and receiving items by stating “It is a boy’s book” “It is a teacher’s pencil”.
