Introducing Possessive Nouns
Within these lessons your students will learn proper use of possessive nouns
in our language. Often even the strongest grammar students can struggle
with singular and plural uses, which is why it’s important for them to be
comfortable with the basic plural noun rules first. The length of time you
spend with each lesson depends on the length of your class each day and also
on how many levels you plan to cover. Whatever time you decide to devote
to each lesson, Please allot time at the beginning of each class for review
of singular and plural possessives (using raffle tickets as reward for proper
identification of the possessive forms is a good motivator). There are two
charts included with spaces for student responses. Those are good for daily
review too.
Objectives :
Level One: Students will identify singular possessives.
Level Two: Students will review singular and learn plural possessives.
Level Three: Students will use singular, plural, compound, and joint ownership
possessives.
Materials: Chart for singular possessives, chart for plural possessives,
noun flashcards, 3 levels of interactive reproducible worksheets, pyramid
game, three mazes (one for each level), baseball activitygame, continue using
noun flashcards

2. Hand out and display the possessive noun chart (Possessive NounOverhead #1) on overhead (or project directly from computer) and ask for
student volunteers to go up to the board and change the singular nouns into
nouns that own something. They can standup or raise their hand if they can
replace the noun.

Introducing Possesive Nouns
1. Ask the class if they can offer an example of a possessive noun. If so, have
them then use it in a sentence (this is a good time for raffle ticket dispersing).
Ask for other volunteers. Once they are comfortable with that facet, ask them
to spell them too.
3. Once you finish with the blanks at the bottom of the #1 overhead chart,
project the possessive noun rules page and handout a hard copy for the
students to file. Review the rules together as a class, and have students offer
original examples for the rules.

4. Next handout or project Level One worksheet. Have the students work
individually, in pairs, or directly on the overhead to complete the possessive
activities. They can then go to the board or overhead and write their answers
directly on the board or overhead for the class to see. It’s good to allow
one student to answer three to five. If they write an incorrect answer, allow
the other students the opportunity to correct it. There are two Level One
worksheets of singular possessive nouns for student practice.
5. After they feel comfortable with singular possessives, have them work on
the Level One maze. You can project the answer sheet for their review once
they are finished. It’s usually more engaging when they work as partners.
6. Level two also has a chart which includes singular, singular possessive,
plural, and the students will practice plural possessives. Put 2nd chart on
overhead and project onto board. Have students come up and one by one
write the correct possessive in the corresponding spot.
7. Once they finish with the chart, handout or project Level Two worksheet.
Have the students work individually, in pairs, or directly on the overhead to
complete the plural possessive activities. They can then go to the board or
overhead and write their answers directly on the board or overhead for the
class to see. It’s good to allow one student to answer three to five. If they
write an incorrect answer, allow the other students the opportunity to correct
it. There are two Level One worksheets of singular possessive nouns for
student practice.
