Jim Manning Getting Ready For A New School Year As we prepare for another school year, there are four events which took place over the summer that assured us that we are spiritually ready to live our mission of Catholic Education here at Alter. First of all, Lourdes Lambert brought Doctor Michael Stabile from Xavier University to our faculty. He conducted an assessment of our performance here at Alter in the spring and gave some team-building sessions over the summer. The title of his program is “Creating a WE Learning Collaborative Culture.” The emphasis of his efforts is to help us here at Alter get beyond a “teaching” environment to an actual “learning” environment where everything we do is oriented around the benefit of the students as individuals. To do this best we need to get beyond the “I” to the “We.” As I have been preaching to all of the athletic teams at their Masses in the beginning of the year, “There is no “I” in team.” Or as Jesus reminds all of his disciples, his students: “Unless you deny your very self, take up your cross daily, and follow in my footsteps, you can be my disciples.” FAITH From the President transition from schools where priests, sisters, and brothers were the predominate teachers to a predominately lay faculty, lay teachers must look beyond “just doing a job” to living out their Godgiven call in life. Teaching is not just a profession; it is a divine calling. For as Jesus tells all of his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth; you are the light of the world.” And lastly, how fitting that we began the school year with an All-School Mass on the Feast of the Assumption. We had a real treat for our students this year. Last spring five people approached me from Alter about becoming Catholic. Catechetical instructions were given on Wednesday evenings in the summer. At our first Mass of the year we celebrated the Rites of Acceptance and Election as stepping stones to the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. We now look forward to their Baptism and Confirmation. What a powerful witness to our students! Once again, as Jesus reminds us: “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full.” We have had a faith-filled beginning to another school year. May the Holy Spirit guide us the remainder of the year and bring it to fulfillment! Fr. JIM Second of all, for our Professional Development Day, we invited Dr. Lickona to speak to our faculty and parents on Character Education. Character development is what Catholic Education is all about in teaching our students how to live virtuous lives. To encourage virtue in our students is so countercultural to all of the messages we receive in our culture. It is done best when the home and the school work together to instill virtue in our youth. And it is done best when we adults model to our children. Once again, as Jesus teaches, “By your fruits you shall know them.” Thirdly, Br. Ray Fitz, former President of the University of Dayton, gave a retreat to our Board to begin another year. As the Catholic Church changes, so too do Catholic Schools. As we The Knight Times alter UPDATE page 3 From the Principal Lourdes Lambert New Security System Installed Beginning with Courage At our first all school Mass, I explained to our students that during my talks at Mass I wanted to highlight the 7 virtues that were commonly associated with the Knights of medieval times. How appropriate that the first of those virtues is courage. Courage is often thought of as the absence of fear, but, in actuality, it is acting in spite of the fear. Lots of folks I know associate courage with the ability to stand up and speak, but, sometimes, it is most courageous to sit down and listen. Courage is the first virtue because, without it, you cannot consistently be virtuous in any other way. It is hard to be just, merciful, faith filled, and hopeful without first having courage. I challenged our students to begin their year with courage by being intentional in their interactions with others and articulating what they want clearly and respectfully. I encouraged them to look for opportunities every day to summon their courage whether that is through speaking, listening, acting, serving others, or loving unconditionally. In case you haven’t noticed, my messages to our students are often things I need to hear myself! Courage is a virtue that I am praying for as we start this school year. There are many improvements and changes happening within our school to enhance your experience as parents and the experience of our students. These changes require me to summon my courage, for it is much easier to accept things as they are - after all, we are already a great school. In my heart, I know that we are capable of even greater things - we can provide an even better experience, we can take our students to even higher levels academically, and we can rise to the challenge of making our faith relevant and meaningful every day. This requires hard work and much courage on the part of everyone at our school. I ask for your prayers as we move forward in improving every aspect of what we do at Archbishop Alter High School. It is a blessing to serve you and your children. A new security system was installed late this summer to help control the safety of Alter’s students, staff and visitors. Because of the generosity of the Alter Boosters and Copp Security Systems, the school was able to provide the most up to date security system available. It is comparable to those systems being put in place at all Kettering and Centerville schools - which will also debut this fall. After the installation of the system, the school started by taking pictures of all faculty and staff for their ID badges. The Knight Card IDs have a chip inside that allows access to the building. In the meantime, students will gain access as they did last year - through the main lobby and gym lobby doors. It is important to note that, effective the first day of school, all doors lock and visitors must now buzz in. Buzzers are located at the front of the school and gym lobby doors. Students will have badge access after Alterfest on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Their access will be from 6:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Once students are in, they may exit at any time, but these times are specifically for gaining P access inside the building. HOT O “We want to make sure we are not welcoming an intruder and that it is hard to get into the building,” stated Principal Lourdes Lambert. “If a door is propped open an alarm will go off throughout the NAM whole building.” E Additionally, the Aux Gym and Seton Hall are also included in the new security system with access doors for students and faculty with the Knight Card IDs. COURAGE The Knight Times alter UPDATE page 4 Lickona Kicks Off the School Year With the help of Fr. Manning, Alter High School was fortunate to bring Dr. Thomas Lickona to campus to speak with faculty and parents about Character Education. Dr. Lickona is a developmental psychologist and professor of education at the State University of New York at Cortland, where he directs the Center for the Fourth and Fifth Rs (Respect and Responsibility). A past president of the Association for Moral Education, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Character Education Partnership and speaks around the world to teachers, parents, religious educators, and other groups concerned about the character development of young people. The all day faculty workshop was held on Monday, August 12th and focused on character education in the catholic schools as well as how to become an ethical learning community. The parent evening brought another topic with “Building Strong Families that Foster Good Character.” Several members of Alter’s Board of Trustees were also in attendance for the presentation. “I applaud bringing in Dr. Lickona today to envision and create, in conjunction with Alter’s faculty, a school that educates the ‘whole’ student,” said Todd Duplain ‘92. “Character Building in children is something that is near and dear to my own heart. Education is about competence but maybe even more importantly, its about conscience. Today I think the staff and faculty heard how important it is to help our students develop their own internal compass.” Dr. Lickona’s workshop left an outstanding impression to begin a successful school year here at the Alter campus. The question I received this morning is the difference between a catechumen and a candidate. A catechumen is an unbaptized person who wishes to become Christian by pursuing baptism. When a priest has instructed a catechumen and baptizes that person in the Catholic Faith, he is able to have the sacrament of Confirmation with that person and the First Eucharist. When a person is already baptized in another Christian tradition and wishes to become Catholic and be confirmed, that person is a candidate. The Church never re-baptizes. The Catholic Church recognizes the baptism of other Christian traditions. To have the Confirmation of a candidate I need the permission of the Bishop to confirm the person or the Bishop may delegate this to the dean, who in our case is Fr. Stretch at Incarnation. Normally he allows the priest who gave the instructions to do so. During our first school mass, we had the rites of acceptance and election for three catechumens and two candidates. As a bit of trivial pursuit, the word “catechumen” is often defined as a “learner.” In the strictest etymological sense of the word it derives from the Greek word “ECHO.” The emphasis here is not on the teaching but the learning. This is consistent with the work that Lourdes is doing with Dr. Stabile moving us away from just a teaching environment to a learning environment. One really never learns a subject matter until he or she can “echo” it back in one shape or form that is measureable in one way or another. In the Christian tradition the ultimate measure is not in the understanding of dogma but in the conversion of one’s lifestyle. As Jesus always taught, “by their fruits you shall know them.” Fr. The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is an evaluation tool used to grade an individual’s movement patterns. The healthcare professional performing the evaluation rates each pattern and provides corrective exercises for those which the individual scores low. After performing the exercises for a period of four weeks, the individual is re-evaluated for increases in functional movement. How will the FMS benefit the individual? • PREDICT INJURY RISK The FMS has shown to predict injury risk in multiple athletic populations (Kiesel et al. and Chorba et al.). By performing the corrective exercises and increasing your score you may effectively decrease your risk of injury. • INCREASE PERFORMANCE By performing the evaluation, the healthcare professional can better direct you in proper exercise selection for your specific movement patterns. While the FMS may decrease injury risk, all injuries are not preventable due to the unpredictable environment of athletic atmospheres. This year, my goal is to change the way we communicate information internally and externally to the Alter community. Our first change happened during the summer with the launch of our new website! There are many new features that include enrollment, athletics, alumni information, and timely Alter news. Because of these enhancements, we are now able to post all the daily announcements online as well as update the school calendar in real time (both accessible from the home page.) We are all entrenched in our digital lives and we believe it is important to keep announcements and calendar items within your reach at all times. With all of these great improvements, we will now say goodbye to the weekly Lance and embrace all of our online capabilities. Please check alterhs.org frequently for the latest news and activities. The Advancement office will continue publishing four issues of The Roundtable each year as well as The Knight Times each month. The Knight Times will always reflect the latest news for the Alter community and include a listing of next month’s calendar items. Last summer, Grigg attended the prestigious Interlochen Singer Songwriter Summer program. The camp was led by Casey Stratton and Courtney Kaiser-Sandler, both of whom are professional singer-songwriters that have rubbed shoulders with some impressive names such as John Mellencamp, Bon Jovi and Sarah McLachlan. “The experience of breaking a spell of writer’s block, as well as making friendships with people who had so much in common with me, helped me realize that this crazy thing I do, write songs, is more important than a mere hobby,” said Grigg. “So I decided to take myself serious for maybe the first time, and see how far I could run with it.” Grigg continued, “It was originally going to be an EP (4-5 songs) but it had a very slow start as I was dealing with withdrawal from the high of fairy tale Interlochen. But I kept writing through it, using my raw emotions as material for music. Finally, in January of this year, I began recording the album proper at Refraze Recording Studio here in Dayton. By that time, the EP had grown to a full length album, first 10, then 12 and finally 13 songs long.” “Along the way,” Grigg added, “I was aided both creatively and emotionally by some other Alter students, including Noah Walters, Andy Cata, Austin Drewry, Lauren Blommel, and more. Also of course Mr. Tucker played a fantastic sax solo, and the artwork was designed by myself, Ryan Crouch, and Rebecca Seiler, with photos by Ashleigh Stewart and Lauren Blommel (all Alter students).” Bullet is now available and information will soon be posted about where to get a copy! crippen benefit dinner On August 17th, nearly 300 generous people dined and donated in the Alter cafeteria to help offset Conor Crippen’s rehabilitation costs. Ron and Huda Fadell, as well as a few Alter teachers, were instrumental in organizing the restaurant’s donations, and silent auction items. All were welcome to attend the dinner at no charge, but were simply asked to provide a donation. “Alter was the most fitting place for the event, as most were from the Alter community. All of us were touched by Conor’s story and shared a desire to help in some way,” said Ron Fadell. “The amount collected was beyond our expectations. Every dollar collected went to benefit Conor’s rehab. Event expenses were zero thanks to all who donated time, sweat, the place and food.” Conor was able to attend the dinner and thanked everyone himself. “It was all very touching,” added Fadell.
