Regina Pribyl Fall 2012 Siddhartha Book Cover Project Grade Level: 10 Subject: ENGL On-Level Prepared By: Regina Pribyl OVERVIEW/OBJECTIVE TEKS OBJECTIVES The students will be creating a book cover that illustrates Siddhartha’s journey with an explanation of one step of the hero cycle. The objective is to recreate one step from the hero cycle that is reflected in the book Siddhartha. On a notecard, they will explain the connection of that step to the book using: a. A quotation from the story b. Supporting information that links it to the story, character or event in the novel. This notecard explanation is attached to the back of the book cover. • Illustrate the book cover using a bright, creative design including: a. The book title b. Author’s name (5) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to: (A) analyze isolated scenes and their contribution to the success of the plot as a whole in a variety of works of fiction; (23) Research/Organizing and Presenting Ideas. Students organize and present their ideas and information according to the purpose of the research and their audience. (20) Research/Research Plan. Students ask open-ended research questions and develop a plan for answering them. LESSON OUTLINE: (5 min) I will go over the instructions with the students, and answer any questions they may have about the assignment. (45 min) The students will work and complete the assignment by the end of the class period. Locate a quotation from the book that BEST captures that part of the hero cycle in the story that you were assigned. On your notecard, write the quotation using correct citing of your source and explain HOW the quote fits with the step of the hero cycle. Attach the notecard to the back of your book cover illustration page. The front cover should capture the spirit of the book. You may choose to use a colorful design that is representational or abstract, but be prepared to explain your illustration. How does your design fit with the story? MODELING The teacher will introduce the lesson by reading the objective and asking students to highlight any key words or important information as she goes through the instructions and rubric. The teacher will ask students if they have any questions, or if they need anything clarified. The teacher will ask the students to recall an activity from the previous week where they had to locate textual evidence to support an idea. Then the teacher will place the students in their partnered groups. Students should face forward and listen. The teacher will check for understanding conferring with students as they work on their projects. The teacher will use the conferring moments to see if the students understand the assignment, expectations, and the progress of their work. Students will show that they understand by answering questions in conferring sessions. Students will show their understanding by explaining how each person contributed to the project. CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING Students will remain quiet and attentive while the teacher explains the activity. Students will ask questions and for clarification. The teacher will check for understanding by asking the students to explain how each person contributed to the project. Vocabulary Regina Pribyl REFLECTION Fall 2012 The teacher will instruct students to fill out the self-evaluation and rank their own performance, as well as giving feedback about the activity. Students will answer the reflection question in their readers’ notebooks. How students know they achieved objective: Students should know they achieved the objective by successfully explaining how each member of the team contributed to the project, conversations during conferring time, and if they followed the instructions for the project. Differentiation: Students will be able to choose how they want to contribute to the project amongst themselves. They will know that their grade depends on the effort they put into the assignment. Special Populations: Students with disabilities that require extra attention will get one-on-one help during the activity and the teacher will also leave written instructions on the board for them to refer to.
