OVERVIEW/OBJECTIVE
TEKS OBJECTIVES
The students will be creating a book cover that illustrates Siddhartha’s journey with an
explanation of one step of the hero cycle. The objective is to recreate one step from
the hero cycle that is reflected in the book Siddhartha. On a notecard, they will
explain the connection of that step to the book using:
a. A quotation from the story
b. Supporting information that links it to the story, character or event in the novel. This
notecard explanation is attached to the back of the book cover.
• Illustrate the book cover using a bright, creative design including:
a. The book title
b. Author’s name
(5) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction.
Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions
about the structure and elements of fiction and provide
evidence from text to support their understanding. Students
are expected to:
(A) analyze isolated scenes and their contribution to the
success of the plot as a whole in a variety of works of fiction;
(23) Research/Organizing and Presenting Ideas. Students
organize and present their ideas and information according to
the purpose of the research and their audience.
(20) Research/Research Plan. Students ask open-ended
research questions and develop a plan for answering them.
LESSON OUTLINE:
(5 min)
I will go over the instructions with the students, and answer any questions they may have about the assignment.
(45 min)
The students will work and complete the assignment by the end of the class period.
Locate a quotation from the book that BEST captures that part of the hero cycle in the story that you were assigned. On your notecard, write the
quotation using correct citing of your source and explain HOW the quote fits with the step of the hero cycle.
Attach the notecard to the back of your book cover illustration page.
The front cover should capture the spirit of the book. You may choose to use a colorful design that is representational or abstract, but be prepared
to explain your illustration. How does your design fit with the story? Get creative with this part of the project!

REFLECTION
Fall 2012
The teacher will instruct students to fill
out the self-evaluation and rank their
own performance, as well as giving
feedback about the activity.
Students will answer the reflection
question in their readers’ notebooks.
How students know they
achieved objective:
Students should know
they achieved the

followed the instructions
for the project.
Differentiation: Students will be able to choose how they want to contribute to the project amongst themselves. They will know that their grade
