DBA program provides opportunity for research and publication
September 26, 2012
Since 2001, students have come from as far as both coasts of the United States and Canada to earn
their Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree at Anderson University. One of the perks for both
students and faculty is collaborating on research as the students work on their dissertations.
“Although this program is young, it is very rewarding to work with doctoral students on achieving their
goals,” said Dr. Mike Wiese, professor of marketing. “The doctoral program provides a natural
opportunity for me to mentor a scholar.”

Wiese, a 23-year-veteran of marketing instruction at AU’s Falls School of Business, recently co-authored an article with Dr. Staci Brettin, based
on her dissertation. The article, entitled “The Market Oriented Innovator's Dilemma," was published in the Business Journal for Entrepreneurs.
Brettin, with Wiese as her advisor, conducted interviews to start the process. She researched what innovation customers wanted and how that
differed from what the innovators or owners of the company actually produced. She also conducted panel research and received 400
completed surveys. The quarterly journal’s focus is on those who have or who are trying to start a business, as well as professors who are
teaching in the field.
Wiese has also been involved in the MBAProgram, previously serving as the director. He continues to do research outside of AU for many
church denominations. He helps these churches grow their high school programs and also works with their Sunday school curriculum. The
article co-authored with Brettin is one of more than 15 articles he has published on his own or co-authored for journals.
Dr. Emmett Dulaney, a professor of marketing since 2006, completed the DBAprogram at AU in 2009 with Wiese as his mentor. His
dissertation was published in the Journal of Internet Marketing.
“My committee chair was Dr. Wiese, and he pushed me to publish it, not willing to take ‘no’ for an answer,” Dulaney said. “After I hit a few
roadblocks with some preliminary journals, he helped prod me to continue on and make the revisions needed to see it in print.”
Since the infancy of the program in 2001, the Falls School of Business has awarded 58 DBAdegrees. There are currently 80 students in the
program from 32 different states and three Canadian provinces. The program accepts around 12 applicants every year, which represents
about half of the people who apply.
“One of the goals of the program is to increase the presence of research in journals through the faculty of Christian universities as far as
published works,” said Dr. Doyle Lucas, director of the DBAprogram. “We work specifically in the doctoral program to teach students how to
change ideas into publications.”
