2012–2013 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY CAPA strives to be a responsible member of the community and positively affect the quality of life in the regions we serve. Here’s how the numbers break down for the 2012–13 season, providing an overall picture of CAPA as an organization and the impact it has on the New Haven region. CAPA is a non-profit, award-winning presenter of national and international performing arts and entertainment operating in Connecticut since 2001. Looking back on the 2012-2013 season, we are proud of the quality and diversity of the shows our patrons continue to enjoy at the legendary Shubert Theater. Part of CAPA’s mission is to present programming of the highest quality to serve and educate diverse audiences—we hope you’ll agree that the variety of theatrical, musical, educational and community outreach programs helped us meet that goal. Our Mission We bring the world to our stages, enrich lives, and create community through our mission to: And Oh What a Season it was! The two-week engagement of Jersey Boys drew record crowds not only to the Shubert, but to downtown New Haven. This hit show helped us attract new audience members to the theater resulting in positive ticket sales throughout the season. The performances of the mega-hit Les Misérables continued that trend. The story and themes of the show were the catalyst for the launch of our new education initiative, Art in Action. Through this new program, a number of high school students were engaged to create a statement about a cause important to them and demonstrate their message positively through art. The results were outstanding and the students’ art was displayed on a billboard on I-95! CAPA continued to strengthen its association with other arts and non-profit organizations as well as our local governing Board of Alders. We were delighted to see so many young people from the New Haven Ballet, Sacred Heart Academy and a number of our local dance studios have the opportunity to perform on the Shubert stage. The dedicated members of New Haven’s Board of Alders volunteered as ushers, ran a food drive to benefit New Haven residents, and premiered their first Broadway Night at the Shubert—a special performance that showcased their talents and raised funds for their new scholarship program, Talent Haven. We are delighted to share our progress with you in our annual report and hope you enjoy reading about the exciting and rewarding work which went into making the 2012–2013 season such a success. On behalf of our board, staff and volunteers, we thank you for your continued confidence and support, and look forward to the Shubert’s 99th Anniversary season. 121,134 patrons 123 events Present and produce artistic programming of the highest quality to serve and educate diverse audiences and feature renowned artists of all cultures $4.9 million in ticket revenue $20 million in economic impact Operate and maintain world-class performance venues 84% of New Haven’s annual operating budget is generated from earned income Strengthen our arts communities by providing facilities for resident companies, and through partnership and collaboration, support those organizations 312 volunteers donated in excess of 19,680 hours Bolster the economy of the community we serve In addition to operating the Shubert Theater, CAPA is owner/operator of downtown Columbus, Ohio’s magnificent Ohio, Palace and Southern Theatres, and manager of the contemporary Riffe Center Theatre Complex and Lincoln Theatre. Now in its 44rd year, CAPA presents 200 live events and classic films a year, including concerts throughout Columbus and Ohio. CAPA’s website address is www.CAPA.com. In recent years the Shubert Theater was used for the build of the national tours of Jersey Boys, The 39 Steps, A Chorus Line, HAIR, The Color Purple, and most recently, The Addams Family. The Addams Family Julius Caesar Julius Caesar Blue Man Group Concerts and Comedy Events Les Misérables As part of its expanded programming initiative, the Shubert hosted a variety of popular concert artists and comedians including Soul and R&B singersongwriter, Joss Stone; Grammy Award-winning Latin superstar Gilberto Santa Rosa; founding member of Talking Heads, David Byrne performing with St. Vincent and John Oliver from Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Each of these unique performances attracted new, diverse audiences to the theater and restaurants in New Haven’s downtown entertainment neighborhood. John Oliver Pilobolus’ Automaton 4 Gilberto Santa Rosa CAPA began a new partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company on their new production of Julius Caesar, one of Shakespeare’s greatest political thrillers. Directed by Gregory Doran, the RSC’s newly appointed Artistic Director, this groundbreaking production was set against the dark, contemporary echoes of modern Africa and included a company of some of the best black actors working in the UK today. Prior to its U.S. Tour, the show was performed at a number of venues throughout the UK including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Theatre Royal, Noel Coward Theatre, as well as the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia. Under the general management of CAPA, Julius Caesar launched its U.S. tour in April, 2013. CAPA managed all aspects of the production’s operation including venue booking, contract negotiations, financial settlements, production transportation, artist accommodations, stage and company management, marketing and press. The touring production received stellar reviews: This Caesar Wears an African Cloak “The blood runs warm in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s vibrant production of Julius Caesar. The heat that rises from this Julius Caesar might surprise some who feel they know this staple… Introducing a greater emotional transparency, this Julius Caesar is the easiest to follow I’ve seen.” —Ben Brantley, The New York Times, April 2013 “This political drama is scorchingly reinvigorated in Gregory Doran’s staging with a superb ensemble. A resounding triumph.” —Independent on Sunday 5 Community Service Shared Services CAPA offers customized back office services to local arts organizations, providing a streamlined process for patrons while allowing the arts organizations to focus on continued, quality entertainment for their audiences. Service agreements are tailored to fit each organization’s needs, but can include marketing, publicity, ticketing, finance, human resources, IT, management, operations, and development. Partnership with Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School In 2010 CAPA was engaged by New Haven’s Board of Education to manage the newly opened Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School, providing management and technical services for the arts programs and related theaters and support spaces, along with internship programs in arts management and technical theater. Shared Service Agreements The City of New Haven Board of Education International Festival of Arts & Ideas Market New Haven New Haven Ballet Yale School of Music Yale Symphony Orchestra International Festival of Arts & Ideas presentation of Sequence 8 Since its inception in 1997, the Shubert Theater’s Education and Community Outreach programs have served young children, teenagers and seniors throughout the New Haven Region. The Shubert strives to remove obstacles of age, poverty and isolation, by providing a variety of access initiatives to those who might otherwise be unable to attend performances at the Shubert. CAPA’s Community Connections ticketing programs provide the most direct service to New Haven’s inner-city neighborhoods. Partnering with over 100 New Havenbased organizations, the Shubert’s community outreach programs distributed over 1,500 Shubert event tickets to families, teenagers and senior citizens. The cost for all distributed community tickets is underwritten by corporations, individuals, the City of New Haven and State of Connecticut. Each year CAPA produces the Music on the Green summer concert series for the City of New Haven. KC & the Sunshine Band 6 Education and Community Outreach CAPA In-School Programs CAPA’s most extensive arts education program is a residency program called MOVIN’, which has run for 16 consecutive years. Over an eight-week period, this program reaches more than 850 young people in 15–20 schools in the New Haven area. The program utilizes non-traditional dance techniques to teach MOVIN’ students important life skills including communication and cooperation, while building self confidence, discipline and focus. Through teamwork and group problem solving exercises, participants explore alternative non-verbal methods of self-expression. The program concludes with a final presentation of the skills they learned before an audience of classmates, schoolmates, parents and teachers. Participating schools in 2012-13 included Truman School, Wexler-Grant School, Betsy Ross Magnet School and more. Art In Action Launched in 2013, Art in Action gives participating students the ability to go beyond a theatrical work to critically think about the themes of the production and apply them to the community in which they live. The benefits of arts education include enhancing a student’s ability to be creative, develop independent ideas and build problemsolving skills as part of a team. This year the presentation of Les Misérables was chosen—the themes of the show gave students the opportunity to create a statement about a cause and to demonstrate their message positively through art. The art work created by the students was displayed at the Shubert during the run of Les Misérables and featured on a billboard on I-95 North. Shubert Summer Theater & Arts Camp presented by the David A. Beckerman Foundation Now in its second year, the Shubert Summer Theater and Arts Camp is formatted for middle school children entering grades 6, 7 or 8. The fourweek camp offers two programs to choose from: The Theater and Arts Camp offers in-depth classes in dance, music, theater, visual arts and creative writing. Each participant selects three classes based on their individual interests and strengths. Offerings include Ceramics & Sculpture, Hip-Hop Dance, Glee Club, Flip Books and more. The Musical Theater Camp focuses on acting, dancing and singing. Participants receive instruction to prepare them to perform in a full stage production. Each of the participants is cast in a role and has the opportunity to perform on Co-Op High School’s Main Stage at the end of the camp. The camp is staffed by Co-Op arts teachers, professional artists, and emerging studentteacher-artists from Co-Op High School. A major benefit of the camp is job training and job opportunities for Co-Op students—the camp employed students as teaching assistants with additional students working in the Technical Theater Training program. The students learn all aspects of theater production including lighting, sound and other related backstage operations. Upon completion of this training, the students will staff production positions during events at Co-Op’s theater facilities.
