Imaginestics to integrate Purdue
University’s 3-D shape search technology
May 7th, 2004
West Lafayette, Indiana, U.S.A - Imaginestics, an emerging leader in knowledgebased software systems for the engineering and manufacturing industry, announced today
that it has entered into an agreement with Purdue Research Foundation to license the 3-D
Shape Search technology, which was developed in Purdue University’s PRECISE lab.
“The implications of this technology in Product Lifecycle Applications (PLA) are far reaching,”
says Nainesh Rathod, CEO of Imaginestics, LLC, a company located in the Purdue Research
Park. “Over the next decade, manufacturers will create and store more 3-D product
definition than ever before. Text-based attributes and other means of structuring and
storing the 3-D product data for quick and easy access are grossly inadequate and require
multiple filtering levels to describe an accurate 3-D shape. This technology uses the lowest
common denominator, the shape itself, as the search criteria, so minimum filtering is
required.”
Professor Karthik Ramani, Director of PRECISE at Purdue University, stated, “Imaginestics
is well positioned to commercialize our technology, having core capabilities and
knowledge-based information systems development experience in design and
manufacturing directly relevant to this new area.”
“This technology will greatly enhance our ability to reliably locate parts, tooling, and
related data for reuse, cost estimating, engineering analysis, and comparison with similar
shapes, quickly finding maintenance records and many other applications.” Edwin
Kincaid, Chief, U.S Air Force Avionics/Electronics Technology Section, said. “The potential
for this research will provide us the means to reduce our depot flow days and return them
to service.”
Imaginestics plans to integrate the 3-D shape search technology in its existing knowledgebased software product suites to enable the rules & re-use engine to transparently and
seamlessly leverage manufacturer’s 3-D legacy data for build-to-order applications,
knowledge-based maintenance and cost advice, and to locate similar parts.
