Bedwetting Information
Bedwetting Alarms Are Effective
Bedwetting alarms are a mainstay in the treatment
of bedwetting. They are an easy first step that
provide a long lasting effect. Bedwetting alarms
are much different than setting an alarm clock to
wake your child. They sound in response to
urination, which varies in time from night to night.
How Alarms Work
Bedwetting alarms help children learn to achieve
nighttime dryness by conditioning the child to stop
the flow of urine when sleeping. A loud noise
sounds at the first drops of urine and awakens the
child. Over time children learn to sense the need
to awaken in response to a full bladder and contract
the pelvic floor muscles to inhibit the flow of urine.
Most alarms consist of a small, wearable plastic
alarm box that attaches to
the shoulder area and a
moisture sensor that
attaches to snug fitting
underwear. Alarms are
battery operated so there
is no risk of shock.
Parents play an important
role in helping the child
arouse in response to the
alarm. Because of their
child’s decreased sleep
arousal, many parents hear
the alarm before their child
responds to it. By
reminding their child what to do next - walk to the
bathroom to urinate - the parent helps establish a
new response. Over time, the child learns to do
this independently and sleep dry all night!
Using an alarm gives the child some control over
their wetting, enhancing their self-esteem and social
freedom. The average length of time required to
become dry varies from a few weeks to a few
months, but treating bedwetting with an alarm can
decrease the length of time they are affected by
years.
Tips for Selecting an Alarm
Before choosing an alarm, consider the following
factors:
Usability - Will your child wear the alarm? Look at
some of the “kid cool” designs, in bright colors, to
encourage children to wear them. Are you comfortable
sewing sensor pockets onto underwear or do you want
an easy clip-on sensor?
Comfort - Is the alarm lightweight and comfortable to
wear? Watch out for alarms with bulky moisture pads
that children won’t wear.
Durability - Is the sensor difficult to unhook during
sleep movements? Be leery of alarms that use metal
snaps and hooks that easily come undone.
Audible - Does the alarm sound to wake the sleeping
child? While combination alarm/vibration alarms add
an extra dimension of arousal, potty alarms that only
vibrate won’t wake the large majority of bedwetting
children. Initially, it is important that parents can hear
the alarm to assist their child to get up.
Turnoff - Can the child easily disconnect the sensor
and roll back over and go to sleep? Alarms that require
more than one step to turn them off promote more
alertness.
When to Start Treatment
This is a decision only you and your child can
make in consultation with your physician or nurse
practitioner. Research shows that alarm therapy
is most effective if both child and family are
motivated to achieve dryness. Most pediatricians
recommend that your child be at least six years of
age. Approximately 15% of children who wet will
stop each year without any help — and 85%
won’t!

Bedwetting Alarms
Bedwetting alarms are an effective, medication free, method to teach
permanent nighttime dryness. All bedwetting alarms are moisture
sensing devices that sound an audible alarm and/or vibrate when urine
is detected. There are many types of alarms to choose from. We
feature both pad alarms and the newer wearable alarms.
Pad type alarms consist of a moisture sensing pad that lays on the bed
which sounds in response to urine. These alarms are well suited for
children who prefer not to have an alarm attached to the underwear.
Wearable alarms require less urine to trigger the sensor than pad alarms.
The newer models of wearable alarms/sensors are very lightweight,
comfortable and sensitive to a small amount of urine.
All alarms sound at approximately 80-90 decibels so that parents can
also be alerted, to initially assist their children in learning a new response
to a full bladder. Siblings are rarely bothered by the sound of the
alarm.

Traditional Bed Pad Alarms — When a Wearable Alarm Won’t Do
The Wet Call is a moisture sensing bed pad/alarm specifically
designed for children who won’t wear an alarm. The Wet Call bed
pad is placed under the child and the battery powered alarm sounds
a tone when the pad’s sensor strips detect moisture. The alarm is
connected via a 5 foot cord to the 19 inch x 24 inch bed pad and
can either be placed on the shoulder of the pajama top, or attached
