List of peninsulas From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A peninsula (Latin: paenīnsula, "paene-": almost + "īnsula": island; also called a byland or biland) is a piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to mainland. In many Germanic and Celtic languages and also in Hungarian, peninsulas are called "half-islands". A peninsula can also be a headland (head), cape, island promontory, bill, point, or spit.[1] Note that a point is generally considered a tapering piece of land projecting into a body of water that is less prominent than a cape.[2] A small peninsula in Croatia Contents 1 Oceania 1.1 Australia 1.2 New Zealand 1.3 Papua New Guinea 2 Europe 2.1 Balkan Peninsula 2.2 Denmark 2.3 Italy 2.4 Iberian Peninsula 2.5 Scandinavian Peninsula 2.6 Turkey 2.7 United Kingdom 2.7.1 England 2.7.2 Scotland 2.7.3 Wales 2.7.4 Northern Ireland 2.8 Republic of Ireland 2.9 Russia 2.10 Other countries 3 Asia 3.1 Kazakhstan 3.2 Eastern Mediterranean Curonian Spit, a large peninsula in the Baltic Sea 3.3 Persian Gulf 3.4 Indian subcontinent and South Asia 3.5 China 3.6 Korea 3.7 Japan 3.7.1 Kyūshū 3.7.2 Honshū 3.7.3 Hokkaido 4 South East Asia 4.1 Philippines 4.2 Indonesia 4.3 Vietnam 5 North America 5.1 Canada 5.2 United States 5.2.1 Alaska 5.2.2 California 5.2.3 Florida 5.2.4 Michigan 5.2.5 New Jersey 5.2.6 New York 5.2.7 Utah 5.2.8 Virginia 5.2.9 Other states Cape Cod, a peninsula of Massachusetts 5.3 Greenland 5.4 Mexico 6 South America 6.1 Other countries 7 Caribbean 8 Africa 9 Antarctica 10 References Oceania Australia Beecroft Peninsula, New South Wales Jervis Bay Territory Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria Cape York Peninsula, Queensland Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territory Cronulla sand dunes, Kurnell Peninsula Dampier Peninsula, Western Australia Eyre Peninsula, South Australia Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia Freycinet Peninsula, Tasmania Inskip Peninsula, Queensland Mornington Peninsula, Victoria Redcliffe, Queensland Stockton, New South Wales Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania Tasmania itself was once a peninsula connected to Australia during the great Ice Ages Wilsons Promontory, Victoria Woy Woy, New South Wales Yorke Peninsula, South Australia Younghusband Peninsula, South Australia A beach on the Mornington Peninsula Looking north over the Kurnell Peninsula.
