Sheriff’s Department, where he held various assignments in patrol, custody and recruitment.
During his more than 30 years of service, Paul served at the Department’s
Lynwood Station, Mira Loma Facility, the county’s Inmate Reception
Center, Lennox Station, West Hollywood Station and in the Admin. Services

MBRWF members Martha Logan, Val Mucha and Lana Van Aggelen present a $1,000 check to Ester Rilea and Sandy Hendren of the
Semper Fi Wounded Marines Fund at Camp Pendleton. Afterwards, the trio drove through the huge and impressive Marine base. These were funds that were raised at the MBRWF July “Downton Attic” yard sale.
Favorite part of the drive? Traffic signs saying “Tank Crossing”!

Winter Greetings! The nation is frozen over and California is warm and dry. I love the cartoon which depicts a bundled up child in a stroller, looking up at his mom and asking, “What was it like before Global Warming?” Of course we can use the rain, but, you just have to laugh at the irony. Hundreds of records have been broken throughout the country with this cold snap.
Tonight, the acolyte of Saul Alinsky will be giving his 6th State of the Union speech. It will be all about income inequality, and the fact that Congress is blocking his agenda, and now HE MUST issue executive orders for the welfare of the people of “HIS” United Kingdo ... I mean States. There are thousands of jobs to be created in the private sector, but the Democrats have a cruel streak.
A huge energy industry, just waiting to drop kick the national unemployment rate, is being shackled by Obama’s left wing minions. Poor economic policies, punitive regulations and government largess is the order of the day.
Why is the US losing ground? Tax rates exceeding 43% cannot finance runaway government spending. The “RAISE THE DEBT CEILING” debate will be starting soon ... again! Lack of econommic liberty impedes both personal freedom and national prosperity. As we decline, we watch 114 countries taking steps (that they learned from us, in a time before this!) to INCREASE the economic freedom of their citizens. Hong Kong dominates, followed by
Singapore, Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand and Canada. Mauritius, Chile, and even Bahrain are also excelling.
We had a great club meeting on January 18th. (see page 4). David Hadley, candidate for the 66th Assembly District will be formidable foe for Al
Muratsuchi. The statistics presented, show that if we can get registered
Republicans out to vote, we can win. It is marvelous how many of our members brought care packages for the 216th CA National Guard soldiers, a fabulous project started by our sister club, Palos Verdes Peninsula RWF. (see page 6).
You will not want to miss our February 15th meeting. We will welcome candidate for LA County Sheriff, Paul Tanaka. Remember, you are always welcome to bring a friend to our meetings, and, if you are reading this and are
NOT a MBRWF member, you are welcome too! Let’s get our third Saturday home at Cantina Real packed to the rafters on February 15th!
Many thanks to VP Martha Logan, who arranges for speakers, restaurants, and handles reservations. She also produces our now “interactive” newsletter, which makes us totally cool in the LACFRW! Thank you too to Joana Gallo-
Marsteller for he hard work as membership chair (get those renewals in, hint-hint!) and Lana Van Aggelen, Treasurer Extraordinaire. Our club is also proud to have Solanna Taragan, the LACFRW treasurer in our midst! We are hoping that other members will step to the plate in club leadership roles.
(PAUL TANAKA continued from page 1)
In 2007, as Assistant Sheriff, Paul directly commanded the activities of the
Department’s three Field Operations Patrol Regions, Detective Division and the Homeland Security Division. In addition, with a budget of approximately
$2.5 billion and more than 18,000 employees, Paul oversaw the
Administrative Services Division, which included the Department’s financial matters, human resources, facilities construction and maintenance.
In addition to his service with the LA County Sheriff, Paul is also Mayor of the City of Gardena. Having first been elected to the City Council in 1999,
Paul was first elected mayor in 2005 and reelected in 2009 and 2013. As mayor, Paul came to understand the importance of hands-on management and understanding what is happening in individual communities and neighborhoods to create a brighter future for citizens with more opportunities for everyone.
Below are Paul’s stance on a number of issues.
Crime Reduction and Safer Communities
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department should focus on reducing crime and make all our communities safer by utilizing intelligent analysis and appropriate deployment of LASD resources.
Fiscal Responsibility
The LASD should perform all its necessary functions within its budget. As we keep LA county citizens safe we should always remember we also have a responsibility to them as taxpayers as well.
Local Cooperation
The Department should work cooperatively with local agency police chiefs to address common crime concerns and emergency response matters, and
California’s other 57 county sheriffs to ensure a stronger unified voice in
Sacramento and Washington on legislation related to public safety issues.
New Direction and Leadership for the Sheriff’s Department
The LA County Sheriff’s Department needs direction that is clear, consistent, unequivocal and sensible. The sheriff must provide leadership that is unwavering, supportive, demanding and disciplined. Accepting responsibility and holding people accountable are essential characteristics of the Sheriff’s office; something Paul Tanaka demonstrated for more than
30 years with the LASD.
Carrying A Concealed Weapon (CCW) Permits
Los Angeles County is known as one of most difficult counties in
California in which to obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon
(CCW). Of the 10 million residents currently residing in Los Angeles
County, only a few hundred individuals have been issued a CCW permit.
I understand the need for caution when allowing civilian residents to legally carry firearms in public. However, as a strong supporter of the
Second Amendment I also believe in a person's right to defend themselves, their families and their homes from possible threats; if it is done in a responsible manner. When elected Sheriff, I will ensure that every CCW request is evaluated on an objective and individual basis without favoritism. If there is a compelling and justified reason for one to be issued, and the applicant meets all the conditions required under the law, I will ensure that the application is duly processed. In addition, should the request be denied, the department will issue a written statement to the applicant explaining why the application was denied.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS!
We have sent out renewal letters for
2014. We hope you will continue to support your club. Let’s keep our success going! We always have plenty of business cards and brochures at our meetings. Be sure to keep a few in your purse, so the next time you are in a line at Starbucks, the DMV, your bank, and the chatting turns political, you can jump right in with ammunition.
We would like to receive your renewals by mid February, so we can get brand new, updated rosters to by early March. If you have misplaced your envelope, everything you need to know is on the last page of this newsletter!
66th Assembly District:
TREASURER WANTED
There is a third-party preparer for all state filings. The core responsibilities would be to make deposits, write checks, balance the accounts, sign paperwork when due, allocate expenditures and report finances to the Committee. The monthly commitment is approximately 3-5
(discretionary) hours, including the standing meeting recurring every 4th Wednesday. The role will be indirectly supported by an
Assistant Treasurer, and Kimberly
Mac Mullan will remain an elected member of the ADCC. contact: martha 310 376 9516 logang@gte.net
J A N U A R Y M E E T I N G R E V I E W
For those that missed our
January, MBRWF members welcomed David Hadley,
Republican candidate for our
66th Assembly district. This area encompasses Hermosa,
Manhattan and Redondo Beaches, the Palos Verdes Peninsula,
Torrance, Lomita, West Carson,
Alondra Park, Harbor City,
Harbor Gateway, and a portion of Gardena. He will be running against Democrat Al Muratsuchi, who defeated Craig Huey in the
2012 election.
David spoke about his campaign. One of the most important important activities are home gatherings. Friends of friends are the best way to spread the word. In this age of social media bombardment, deleting message from unfamiliar people or companies becomes a necessity. Personal invitations to engage in conversations or gatherings get attention.
David served two years as President of the Beach Cities Republicans, Chair of the GOP 66th Assembly District Central Committee, and is founder of the
South Bay 100. The South Bay 100 is a community of over 170 local elected officials, community leaders and concerned residents throughout the district who are working together to change the political landscape of the South Bay.
There will be plenty of volunteer opportunities for MBRWF club members:
Campaign office work, walking precincts, making phone calls, but most of all, spreading the word. The 66th Assembly is a very “winable” District! For more info about David’s campaign, please go to www.davidhadley.com
MBRWF was well represented at the 2014 LACFRW Leadership conference! Solanna Taragan, who serves as treasurer on the
LACFRW board, gave a workshop for all incoming club treasurers.
Martha Logan, who produces the
LACFRW newsletter led a discussion with all the club newsletter editors. She was happy to report, that the number of clubs that run their own websites (not under the LACFRW umbrella) is up to 12, from a mere four last year.
Shawn Steel, Republican
National Committeeman was the featured speaker, and he brought some good news with him! See next page.

News Channel television personality and co-host of Fox and

Shawn Steel brought some good news with him to the
2014 LACFRW Leadership
Workship recently. The RNC is planning to spend some money in the (what used to be called) the Golden State. It is important that the Democrats super majority hold be broken.
On the national level, the
Republican National
Convention will now be held in July instead of September, giving the nominee extra time to campaign, AND more importantly, more time to combat negative attack ads!
T RO O P M A I L I N G U P DAT E !
Remember the cookies we gathered at our November meeting? Well, you will be happy to know that they made it to their destination: the 216th
Mechanical Engineers Mobility
Augmentation Company of the
California Army National Guard stationed in Afghanistan. We are helping the Palos Verdes Peninsula Republican
Women, chaired by Cheryl
Gimbel with this wonderful project.
There are 94 soldiers in this company, and it has been a herculean effort on the part of the PVPRWF ladies. At the
November meeting, MBRWF members selected a soldier’s “wish list,” and then went shopping. We just completed packing 26 boxes, filled with personal items for these soldiers. A HUGE thank you to all our members who either selected a soldier, baked cookies, or purchesed “extras” to add to the packages. Cheryl, and MBRWF member
Martha Logan safely delivered all 26 boxes to the post office! This will be the last mailing to these soldiers, as the
216th will be returning home this spring.
So far we can report, all men are safe.
Two were wounded in an ambush, but they are now home and recovering. The letter at right, is an update to Cheryl from Captain Bejarno, Commander of the 216th, in response to the Christmas mailing!
CPT Bobby Bejarano, Argonaut 6 Commander, 216th EN CO (Route Clearance)
Dear Cheryl
I got another box of cookies last night and just wanted to keep you posted.
Two of the tins were smashed but the cookies are ok. I think there has been a serious lack of care with the post office people lately as we’ve noticed many of our packages have had what appear to be punch holes, kick marks and even some corners smashed in beyond normal wear and tear. I’m not very happy about that but there isn’t much I can do except take it out on the
Taliban :) but at least we got your love and the cookies always bring up great conversation and smiles. :) thank you so much. I’ll stay in touch.
“Attached is a pic of me with my cup of coffee that my 1SG took while I was
“supervising” the guys that do maintenance on our vehicles. Behind me is the Buffalo, which is the main armored vehicle we use to pull IED’s out of the road with. This one has quite a few finds under her belt. Next to me are two mine rollers that we hook up to the front of our other armored vehicles and help us with pressure plate IED’s or mines hidden in dirt roads. Luckily enough for us, these puppies are still in their original configuration and I haven’t had to replace parts yet
(knock on wood). You may notice one of our burn barrels where we gather in the evenings and sing acapella and Billy Joel doo wop gems :)
PVPRWF Chair of the troop packaging project Cheryl Gimbel, and MBRWF member Martha Logan begin loading up the 26 packages from MBRWF members to the 216th in Afghanistan.
