session can help you catch up or get ahead.
Here are a few guidelines to help you GRIT going!
CURRENT UMBC STUDENTS
Registration for summer session begins March 21. Advising
is highly recommended, but not required. Register online
through myUMBC—just like the fall and spring semesters.
VISITING STUDENTS
Earn credits at UMBC that transfer back to your home
institution. Apply for summer session admission online
by May 25 (for Session I) or July 6 (for Session II) and
register for courses once you’ve been admitted.
NEW UMBC STUDENTS (FALL 2016)
GETTING
STARTED
New full- or part-time students already admitted to UMBC
for fall 2016 do not need to complete another application
for summer session. Contact the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions to request a change in your starting term from
fall to summer 2016. Advising for new UMBC students is
highly recommended, but not required.
PRE-COLLEGE STUDENTS
If you are a highly motivated high school student who meets
early admission requirements, consider earning college credits
this summer at UMBC. Contact the Undergraduate Admissions
Office to speak to an admissions counselor.
Non-credit programs in STEM, arts, and the humanities are
also available through UMBC’s Summer Enrichment Experience
for middle and high school students.

Campus Closure Policy
If classes are cancelled due to a university closing, the official make-up day is the first Saturday following
the cancelled class. Instructors may also choose to reschedule classes on an alternate make-up day.
Sign-up for e2Campus, an emergency alert text-messaging system that notifies subscribers of any
campus-related emergency (such as a potential safety hazard or campus closure).

WHEN TO REGISTER
Registration begins on Monday, March 21, 2016. Advising is
not required, but highly recommended. Since summer courses
often fill, register early to avoid disappointment.
HOW TO REGISTER
CURRENT UMBC STUDENTS
If you are enrolled in the spring, you are already eligible to
register in summer session. Search the schedule and register
online using your smart phone or tablet.
INCOMING NEW UMBC STUDENTS
Get a jump start on your course requirements. Contact the
Office of Undergraduate Admissions to request a change in
your starting term from fall to summer 2016.
VISITING STUDENTS
Apply for summer admission by May 25 (Session I) or July 6
(Session II).
REGISTRATION
You must be in good academic standing at your home institution
and provide a current transcript to enroll in UMBC courses with
prerequisite requirements. Confirm with your home institution
that credits are transferable before you enroll.

as a visiting student.
REGISTERING IN COURSES
WITH PREREQUISITES
Visiting students attempting to register in UMBC courses with
prerequisites will be blocked from enrolling. You must first
verify that you’ve previously met the course prerequisites
before you will be granted permission to enroll.
If you receive a registration error indicating that you do not
have the appropriate prerequisites, or that you need consent
to register, submit a prerequisite override request to the Office
of Summer and Winter Programs. Visit umbc.edu/summer for
more information.
DID YOU KNOW?
The summer session website is mobile friendly. You can easily search the schedule and register
for classes on your smartphone or tablet. Visit umbc.edu/summer on a mobile device to

SCHEDULE CHANGES
The Schedule Adjustment Period provides four days at the start of each summer session
to add, drop, or swap summer courses.
Session I Schedule Adjustment: May 31–June 3
Session II Schedule Adjustment: July 11–July 14
ADDING COURSES
Registration remains open through June 3 (Session I) and July 14 (Session II). If the
class you want to add has already started, check with the instructor first—you might have
already missed too much class time to catch up, and the instructor may deny you
permission to enroll. Classes added during the Schedule Adjustment Period incur
a $20 late registration fee.
DROPPING COURSES
There is no academic penalty for courses dropped during the four day Schedule
Adjustment Period. If a course is dropped after the Schedule Adjustment Period, it is
considered an attempt, and your transcript will record a “W” for the dropped course.
There is no financial penalty for courses dropped through the first day of each summer
session (May 31–Session I; July 11–Session II). After the first day of each session, tuition
and fee refunds are pro-rated based on the date the course is dropped.
SWAPPING COURSES
During the four day Schedule Adjustment Period you can “swap” a course for another
course (with the same number of credits) without academic or financial penalty. If the
class you want to add has already started, check with the instructor first—you might have
already missed too much class time to catch up, and the instructor may deny you
permission to enroll.
CLOSED COURSES & WAITLISTS
If a course is full, use myUMBC to place your name on the waitlist. If a seat opens in a
closed course, eligible students are automatically enrolled according to their position on
the waitlist.
Summer Session I
After May 27: Waitlists are disabled, and students are no longer enrolled
automatically in Session I courses.
Summer Session II
After July 8: Waitlists are disabled, and students are no longer enrolled
automatically in Session II courses.
Once waitlists are disabled, contact the Office of Summer & Winter Programs, or the
instructor to check seat availability.
COURSE LOAD LIMIT
You can register for up to 16 credits in summer session (with a maximum of 8 credits
in each of the two sessions).
Highly motivated and academically strong students may be granted permission to enroll
in more than 8 credits per session with prior permission. Advanced approval is required
from both the student’s advisor and the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional
Advising. Download an Excess Credit Request form at umbc.edu/summer.
REPEAT COURSES
You may not register for the same course more than two times. If there are special
circumstances that require you to register for a course more than twice, you must first
petition the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) to request a third and final
attempt of a course taken at UMBC or another institution. Access the petition form
at umbc.edu/summer.

HOW IS TUITION DETERMINED?
Summer session tuition is based on academic career (undergraduate or graduate), UMBC’s standard
credit hour tuition rates and Maryland residency. There are only two mandatory summer fees—an
auxiliary facilities fee and a summer session fee. Some courses may have additional fees (such as
lab or materials fees), which are noted in the online schedule of classes.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
SUMMER SESSION SCHOLARSHIPS
Let us help you GRIT going!
The Office of Summer & Winter Programs offers a limited number of
full and partial summer session scholarships to UMBC degree-seeking
students with a high GPA who are close to graduating. Financial need
(demonstrated by current FAFSA form) is also considered.
Full scholarships cover tuition for ONE summer session course
(up to 4 credits) based on UMBC’s in-state undergraduate or
graduate tuition rate.
Partial scholarships cover HALF of the tuition for ONE summer
session course (up to 4 credits) based on UMBC’s in-state
undergraduate or graduate tuition rate.
The deadline to apply for a summer scholarship is Wednesday,
April 20, 2016 at 5 p.m.

Tuition bills are posted at the beginning of the month and paid
online through myUMBC. Bills are not mailed.
WHEN TO PAY YOUR BILL
E-bills are posted to myUMBC on the first day of the month
after you register. If the first day of the month falls on a
weekend or holiday, E-bills are generated the next business
day. Payment is due on the 20th day of the same month the
E-bill is posted. Late fees are added to bills that are not paid
by the 25th day of the month.

UMBC is dedicated to your success.
During summer session, academic support is available outside of class to improve your study
skills, facilitate content understanding, and help you build a strong foundation for self-directed
learning, an important skill for professionals in every field.
MATH & SCIENCE TUTORING
UMBC’s Learning Resources Center offers small-group tutoring sessions for most mathematics
and statistics courses, as well as most 100 and 200-level biology, chemistry, and physics
courses. Tutoring is provided by current UMBC students who have demonstrated success
in the subject they tutor, and the sessions typically lasts fifty minutes to an hour.
Be sure to come prepared with books, notes, and a few questions you would like addressed!

WRITING SUPPORT
Located on the first floor of the AOK Library, the Writing Center is a tutoring space dedicated
to helping students with writing in any UMBC summer class. One-on-one support is provided
for any stage of the writing process.
• If you’re having trouble getting started, bring your assignment sheet and spend a few
minutes talking about strategies for getting started.
• If you have an outline, we can help you expand and improve on that.
• If you’ve got a paper written and need it reviewed, we can help with that, too.
Tutors will not tell you what to write or fix mistakes for you, but they will help you learn to
critique and improve your own writing.

CULTURE & SOCIAL JUSTICE
Social Justice (so·cial jus·tice) noun. 1: a social philosophy advocating
the removal of inequalities among people; 2: the idea of acting with
equality, fairness and dignity to all human beings.
This summer, interdisciplinary departments in UMBC’s College of Arts,
Humanities, and Social Sciences will offer general education courses
focused on topics in culture and social justice.
These courses address relevant social issues, while promoting critical
thinking and writing skills. They offer a view of social issues and practices
from various perspectives, as well as the intersectional analysis of race,
class, and gender. Courses in culture & social justice invite students to
understand and analyze structural inequalities while challenging them to
envision and build a better future.
AFRICANA STUDIES
Africana Studies provides the tools to understand,
critically evaluate, analyze and interpret events
and phenomena that structure the experiences,
possibilities and dynamics of the people of African
descent in the U.S., Africa and its Diasporas.
Courses address the cultural, economic, historical,
political, psychological and sociological issues that
affect peoples of African descent.

Diaspora through a survey of historical and
sociocultural ties that link people of African
descent worldwide. Evaluates ideas about the
different cultural, economic, psychological,
sociological, and political challenges confronting

African Drumming and Dance
This hands-on workshop teaches the techniques
of West African drumming as well as the cultural
and historical significance of the djembe drum.
Students learn specific musical styles and traditions
by singing West African songs and using traditional
and contemporary African musical instruments. No
prior experience with African drumming, singing, or

AMERICAN STUDIES
GENDER &
WOMEN’S STUDIES
A focus on issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and social
justice has always been integral to the American Studies
Department. These courses provide skills to critically analyze
issues of place, identity, and community through a comparative
and transnational lens.
Gender and Women’s Studies courses provide skills to critically
analyze how gender and sexuality intersect with differences
of race, class, nationality, ability status, and more. Courses
help demonstrate how these axes of difference structure
unequal access to resources, distribute life chances differently,
and produce and challenge justice in local and global
settings. Courses help students think critically, not just about
the origins of injustice, but also the ways people strive to
achieve social justice.

TV and American Culture
Examines the economic, social and artistic implications of
television in the United States. It explores how TV’s history
interacts with class, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality in terms
of social hegemony. Explore new ways people consume
media and how television is now available on many platforms
and what that means for the industry as it tries to survive in
the 21st century.

Introduction to Critical Sexuality Studies
Examines the history and roots of inequality with a particular
focus on sexual and gender minorities both locally and
globally. It also looks at the intersections of sexuality with
other differences such as gender, race, class, and ability.

American Culture in Global Perspective
Emphasizes American consumer culture in the context
of globalization. Illuminates the meaning and history of
particular American social structures, cultural values and
ideological themes by placing them in a global perspective.
Explore topics like "McDonaldization," the global labor
and ecological issues surrounding the garment industry,
and the representational politics of American mass-mediated
entertainment as public diplomacy.

Examines the roots of gender, class, and race-based inequalities
through case studies of gender, labor, and globalization and

Surveys salient topics and debates in Asian American cultural
studies. Examines historical information on immigration patterns
for various Asian groups, but the main focus explores cultural
contributions of Asians in the U.S. through literature and film.

Women, Gender and Law
Examines ways in which gender affects rights within the
American civil and criminal legal systems. It explores the
interrelationship between traditional attitudes and stereotypes concerning women's roles in society and the historical development of women's legal rights. Topics include
discrimination in employment and education, reproduction
rights, and criminal law issues affecting women, including
domestic violence, rape and prostitution.

American Music and Culture: “Race and Power:
Hip Hop and Rap in America”
What relationship does the Hip Hop movement have to the
corporatization of rap as a genre, and how has that affected
racial politics in America in the last 30 years? A variety of
topics are examined, including literature, film and media, to
discuss the political economy of Hip Hop as a movement,
and Rap as a genre.

SOCIOLOGY
Sociology courses provide an understanding of how social
interactions, opportunities, and attitudes are shaped by
social structures and membership in social categories (social
class, gender, race, ethnicity, ability, etc.). Courses encourage
students to develop a “sociological imagination” and use
sociological approaches to critically analyze social inequalities
and injustices, their causes, their consequences, and potential
way to achieve social justice for disadvantaged populations.

HYBRID COURSES
Hybrid courses (partially online/partially in-person) reduce the number
of in-class meetings by replacing some in-person classes with online,
out-of-class, or interactive learning activities. Hybrid courses require more
independent learning on the part of the student than an in-person class.

SUMMER BRIDGE
PROGRAM FOR
NEW FRESHMEN
Get a jump start on college, and get ready for the fall.
Your path to graduation begins with a solid foundation in mathematics
and writing. That’s why all incoming freshmen are required to take a
math and English class within their first year at UMBC.
The six-week Summer Bridge Program, through UMBC’s Collegiate
Success Institute (CSI), pairs a required introductory math or writing
course with an interactive seminar to help ease the transition to college.
Outside of class, dedicated CSI staff coordinate tutoring and study
groups, offer individual advising, and organize special events for new
students. It’s a great way to get ahead, meet new friends, and learn your
way around campus. Students who successfully complete the program
will earn 4-8 credits, and receive a scholarship equal to one credit of
fall in-state tuition.
MATH TRACK: College Algebra (MATH 106)
or Pre-Calculus (MATH 150)
These courses are prerequisites for calculus (MATH 151),
the required fall math course for incoming STEM
majors at UMBC. MATH 150 also meets the general
education math requirement for all majors. Your math
course placement is based on selected major and
math placement test scores.

ENGLISH TRACK: English Composition (ENGL 100)
English Composition is required in the first year for
incoming freshman and a core writing course for all
majors. Enroll in the summer to master college-level
writing, and to practice critical thinking, reading,
research, and analytical skills.

POLI 469: Special Topics in Comparative Politics: Italian Politics
(3 credits)

COURSE OVERVIEW
POLI 469 introduces the complicated world of Italian politics, and an appreciation of the
difficulties that Italian politicians face when trying to endorse political change. It focuses
on institutional analysis—the study of the decision making process in government itself.
It also presents the important role the Italian economy plays in the European Union, and
how Italy is responding to ongoing economic problems and the current migrant crisis.
Dr. Carolyn Forestiere, who spent several years studying and working in Italy, presents
a foundation for understanding not only Italian politics, but also the politics of other
European Union countries as well.
THE COUNTRY
Located in the heart of Tuscany, Siena is a small, peaceful city (somewhat off the beaten
path) that provides an authentic Italian daily living experience. Siena also lies within easy
distance of most of Italy’s Most popular and well-traveled hotspots, such as Florence and
Rome, Venice, Milan, and Naples.

POLAND STUDY ABROAD
POLI 372: Transitioning States and Nations (3 credits)*
July 11–August 5
COURSE OVERVIEW
Poland—the country that sparked the fall of communism in Europe—becomes a laboratory to study
democratization and nation-building.
POLI 372 traces modern Poland’s tragic path from multiculturalism to ethnic homogeneity, as well as
its triumphant path from imperial subject to independent state. The program includes visits to sites in
Krakow, Gdansk and Warsaw and illuminates the historical and cultural factors that have helped create
the current democratic Polish nation.
The program is led by Dr. Brian Grodsky, an expert on democratization and human rights, who has
spent several years in Poland as a researcher, reporter, and U.S. diplomat.

THE COUNTRY
Poland offers a number of natural attractions, from beaches on the Baltic coast and expansive lakes in
the north, to the beautiful Tatry mountains in the south. Students will also have opportunities to travel
outside of class.

REDUCED PROGRAM COST
Tuition costs to enroll in POLI 372 and POLI 469 will be waived for Summer Session 2016 to make
these faculty-led study abroad programs more affordable for UMBC students. Students are responsible

UMBC is proud to bring back the Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE)
for 2016!
SEE is a commuter day program that brings the college experience to
middle and high school students through exciting one- and two-week
non-credit academic enrichment activities in STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics) and the Arts & Humanities. Participants will
work alongside UMBC faculty, students, and industry experts allowing them
to tap into their creative talents, expand critical thinking, and hone their
academic skills.

Before summer session begins, be sure you have everything ready to
GRIT going! Visit umbc.edu/summer to find all the information you
need to get started in summer session.
myUMBC
myUMBC is a web-based portal to student services and online
resources at UMBC. Use myUMBC to register for classes, view
your account balance, pay your bill, request a parking permit,
check university email and view your final grades.
BLACKBOARD
Blackboard is UMBC’s online course management system.
When you register for classes, you are automatically enrolled
in Blackboard. Log into Blackboard early to check for updates.
Faculty often post course assignments and resources before
the session begins.
e2CAMPUS (TEXT ALERTS)
Sign-up for e2Campus, an emergency alert text-messaging
system that notifies subscribers of any campus-related
emergency (such as a potential safety hazard or campus closure).
TEXTBOOKS
Summer textbooks are available in May through the
UMBC Bookstore.
HOUSING
Summer apartment housing is available for both UMBC and
visiting students. Contact UMBC’s Office of Residential Life or
visit umbc.edu/reslife to learn more about on-campus housing
options in summer session.
PARKING PERMITS
A valid UMBC permit is required to park on campus (cost is
included in the summer session fee). Visiting students should
order a parking permit early to ensure you have it before the
start of classes. Summer session parking permits are available
after May 1.
