Work in progress:
Interpretation, exhibit development and design services for restored Charlestown
Mill, Charlestown Township, PA. IS is developing script, providing design
services and managing fabrication/installation of exhibits for a restored mill built
in 1750. Interpretive panels will orient visitors to the key features of the mill’s
history, its associated technology that changed over its 250 year lifespan and its
related social history. [Anticipated completion: September 2016].
Long-Range Interpretive Plan for the Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic
Site, Washington, DC. IS is developing a long-range plan for the Carter G.
Woodson Home which was the residence of Dr. Woodson from 1922 until 1950.
This National Park Service site served as a center for his pioneering work on
scholarly research of African American history and his groundbreaking
educational programs that promoted an appreciation of African American culture
and history throughout the nation and beyond. [Anticipated completion: June
2016].
Facilitated interpretive planning projects:
•
Implementation of Interpretive Master Plan for the Fox-Wisconsin Heritage
Parkway (FWHP), Wisconsin. Upon completion and board acceptance of an
interpretive master plan prepared for the FWHP in 2013 for a 283 mile long
heritage corridor, IS facilitated a two-year start-up effort designed to implement
historical and natural resource interpretive message delivery. IS created a field
office in Portage, WI to work with local partner sites to build heritage capacity
along the waterway. The implementation process led to the creation of a
comprehensive planning document, including a “gap analysis” of existing
conditions, as part of an application for National Water Trail status from the
National Park Service [Completed October 2015].
•
Long-Range Interpretive Plan for the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, Wisconsin.
The plan is designed to set new standards for interpreting the nearly 1,200 mile
Ice Age National Scenic Trail, established in 1980. It establishes a prototype for
specifying media delivery at the state’s many lakes, river valleys, gently rolling
hills, and ridges. The trail tells the story of Wisconsin as it existed 15,000 years
ago when much of North America lay under a huge glacier. Under an NPS IDIQ
contract, Harpers Ferry Center. [Completed December 2013].
•
Interpretive Master Plan for the Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway, Wisconsin.
Developed IMP for heritage area that traces the route of Marquette and Joliet
along a waterway that has been in continuous human use for more than 10,000
years. The parkway is 283 miles long, and encompasses heritage sites, abundant
natural resources, and outstanding recreational opportunities. The 18 month
project included targeted site analysis by Ken Saiki Design, landscape architects
from Madison WI and preservation architecture consultation by Cornerstone
Preservation of Cross Plains, WI. The project followed the NPS interpretive
planning process model, enhanced by IS. [Completed January 2013].
•
Long Range Interpretive Plan – for Brown v. Board of Education National
Historic Site, Topeka, KS. Under NPS IDIQ contract, Harpers Ferry Center.
[Completed August 2012].
•
Texas Historical Commission, Austin, TX. Interpretive Master Plan for Sam Bell
Maxey House, Paris, TX. Developed interpretive plan that defines programmatic
options for story delivery and related collections use at state historic site.
[Completed August 2012.]
•
Strategic Interpretive Plan for Eastern State Penitentiary (part of architectural
master plan). Developed with Atkin Olshin Shade, Architects, Philadelphia for
Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia [Completed August 2011).
•
Fort Monroe Authority, Fort Monroe, VA. Development of Interpretive Master
Plan for new heritage/environmental heritage site including cultural business plan
on former army base now owned by the state of Virginia (Completed June 2010).
•
Long Range Interpretive Plan – for African Burial Ground National Monument,
New York, NY. Under NPS IDIQ contract, Harpers Ferry Center. [Completed
December 2011].
•
Long Range Interpretive Plan – for Civil War Defenses of Washington,

that reevaluates thematic and programmatic options for historic inn and the

Allentown, PA. Existing conditions analysis and interpretive plan to define 250
year old cemetery’s significance and to identify media options for delivering a
new visitor experience in city’s Historic District. Project developed in association
with Brown Design Corporation, Landscape Architects, Allentown, PA.

Develop and design Interpretive Kiosk System for Lackawanna Heritage Valley
Authority, Scranton, PA. Develop comprehensive interpretive planning strategy
to thematically link 10 cultural heritage sites including Steamtown National

Develop “Museum Without Walls,” interpretive strategy for downtown Lancaster
City, PA to promote the city’s heritage assets as a visitor destination. For

South Cle Elum Railyard Interpretation, South Cle Elum, WA. Feasibility study
and interpretive strategy for historic Milwaukee Road site in the Cascade

Selected exhibit development and design projects:
Interpretive strategy, script, design and fabrication services for Heritage Park,
East Pikeland Township, Chester County PA. Developed waysides interpretive
strategy and exhibits as part of Township’s heritage trail system incorporated
within the Schuylkill National Heritage Area. The park commemorates the site of
the Continental Powder Works, the only state owned and operated gunpowder
mill and gunlock factory during the Revolutionary War. [Completed April 2013].
