American Parenting and The Culture of Worry:
How to offset cultural worry and bring a play-based approach
to learning to your child.
Pavilion
Saturday, January 23 from 10am – 12noon
Bring your child/ren and spouse/partner! 5-8 years old – or emergent readers
Instructor: Kimberly Blackburn
To register email amannes@townoffairfax.org directly
Sliding scale donation, suggested $25/ family unit
Parents are the one key left to ensuring that children have developmentally appropriate
foundation to learning and childhood. In this workshop you will learn the clear
difference between cognitive and social/emotional learning and why it is so important
to put social/emotional learning first.
From a cross cultural perspective, America leads the way among advanced countries
in expecting excessive cognitive performance from children, starting in Kindergarten.
Research is conclusively showing that this does not result in higher academic
performance levels and is in fact stunting normal development and adversely affecting
children’s mental health.
11
Find out more about the research and what you can start doing NOW to ensure your
child and family doesn’t get caught up in the culture of worry.
12
You will also get hands on experience with your child in a play-based reading program
that will introduce you to ‘CHILD-CENTRIC’ LEARNING. You will leave with some
fun new literacy skills that will excite you and your child about how to connect, learn
and treasure family time in the context of learning. If there is enough interest among
participants we will launch a regular “Family Literacy Reading Camp” that will meet
in your neighborhood and continue to support your family in bonding and thriving
as literacy and school learning continues throughout the school year.

Camp Fairfax
August 1 – August 26
Camp Fairfax is a homegrown local camp for school aged youth
going on its 7th year! During this special time of year campers and
their counselors focus on the unique aspects of our little town. This
simple and old style summer camp explores arts and crafts, the
natural environment, and recreational games under the redwood
trees. We place heavy emphasis on community building scaffolding
age ranges so campers can learn from each other and build
confidence through collaboration. We work with local businesses
to bring the youth fun field trips to places like the Fairfax Vet Clinic
and Wildcare. In addition, we have a variety of specialized classes
that happen throughout the summer including, music, mindfulness,
yoga and more.
Come have fun in your own backyard!
