Ashland
Southern Oregon
University is in Ashland,
a town of 21,000 people
nestled in an alpine setting at the base of the
Siskiyou Mountains.
Located 15 miles north
of the California border
on Interstate 5 at the
south end of the Rogue
Valley, Ashland attracts
nearly 400,000 visitors each year
for the world-famous Oregon
Shakespeare Festival, the lively
downtown, the meticulous Lithia
Park, the abundant theatre, and
other events. The town features
60 lodging
facilities and
over 90 restaurants. The area scenery, the colorful downtown, and the many boutiques, cafes, shops and
stores provide a spectacular, culturally diverse
environment.
Oregon Shakespeare Festival
The Shakespeare Festival’s
1,200-seat Allen Pavilion.
Gregory Leiber/Photo Quest
Founded in 1935, the Tony Award-winning Oregon
Shakespeare Festival presents 11 plays in repertory, five by Shakespeare and seven by other
classic or contemporary playwrights. Its three
theatres provide very different experiences: the 1,200-seat outdoor
Elizabethan Theatre, similar in design to the Fortune Theatre of
Shakespeare’s time; the modern 600-seat Angus Bowmer Theatre;
and a new, as yet unnamed 360-seat indoor theatre. Performances
run from February to November.
Lithia Park
Chris Markes
Established in 1908, Lithia Park covers 100 acres
along Ashland Creek at the center of downtown. The
park plays a central role in the town’s character.
Favored by walkers,
joggers and lovers of
nature, the park is a
place of beauty and
solitude. The park provides manicured lawns, picnic areas,
tennis courts, a Japanese garden,
a rose garden, two duck ponds and
Chris Markes
groves of sycamore trees.
Rogue Valley Attractions
Other Attractions
Medford
Medford, southern Oregon’s largest city and economic hub with a
population of 63,100, is 14 miles northwest of Ashland on Interstate
5. The city is home to the region’s largest shopping areas, including the Rogue Valley Mall. Delta, United, America West and Horizon
Airlines service Medford’s Rogue Valley International Airport.
Crater Lake
Crater Lake, just 80 miles
from campus, is home to
Oregon’s most spectacular natural feature and the
state’s only national park.
The lake was formed 7,000
years ago when Mount
Mazama erupted and left
behind a six-mile-wide
caldera that filled with rain
and snow runoff. The pristine mountain lake is the second-deepest
in North America with an average depth of 1,500-feet.
The Rogue River
Formed on the slopes of Crater
Lake, the Rogue River is noted
for its steelhead and salmon fishing and whitewater rafting. The
river’s lower section was the first
to receive “Wild and Scenic” status by Congress in 1968.

Mount Ashland Ski Area
Chris Markes
Located 20 minutes southwest of Ashland, the
7,500-foot Mount Ashland offers day and night
skiing for most ability levels. Four chair lifts give
access to 23 runs; the longest drop is 1,150 feet. The mountain averages 20 feet of snow at the
summit with an average depth of 110 inches. The
ski season runs from Thanksgiving through April.
• Oregon Caves National
Monument (near Grants Pass)
offers year-round tours of a
remarkable network of natural
underground chambers.
• The Britt Festival (in
Jacksonville) is a premiere
outdoor music and performing
arts festival. Set in a natural
amphitheatre two blocks from the
heart of Jacksonville, the festival
attracts renowned artists to perform under the stars each summer. Notable recent performers were Clint Black, Smokey
Robinson, Huey Lewis, Willie
Nelson and Howie Mandel.
• Cascade Mountain Range
The Rogue Valley sits at the foot
of the Cascade range, which
features a series of stratovolcanoes stretching between
British Columbia and northern
California.
• Mt. McLoughlin (near
Medford), elevation 9,495, is one
of the range’s older, dormant
peaks. The summit is accessible
without ropes.
• Mt. Shasta (southeast of
Ashland), elevation 14,162, is
one of the tallest, most majestic
and potentially seismically active
mountains.
Jacksonville
Jacksonville is a National Historic Landmark located 15
miles from Ashland and five from Medford. One of the
West’s finest preserved examples of the 1850s gold rush,
the town is one of only eight on the National Register of
Historic Places. Attractions include gourmet restaurants, a
quaint shopping district, historical museums, charming inns
and over 80 Victorian-style buildings and homes constructed
in the 1800s.
