By Jos Holman Tippecanoe County Librarian Oftentimes, new laws are implemented that have an unusual effect on the overall operations of an organization. Such was the case in 2010. Effective July 1, 2010, a new Indiana law legislated a four-year interval for a library Board trustee who completed four four-year terms on a library Board. From the moment this legislation was in draft form, I anticipated it would have an unfortunate impact on TCPL. I confess that was a selfish position that did not emanate from a positive perspective. After all, 16 continuous years of service is substantial and very commendable. From a positive perspective, on December 31, 2011, Jerry Withered will finish his fourth and final term as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Tippecanoe County Public Library. In and of itself, 16 years of voluntarily working on behalf of an organization is more than admirable. Add to that, an unwavering commitment and interest in not only seeing the library move forward, but also continuously monitoring taxpayer interests while doing so is praiseworthy. There is no doubt Jerry has shown he cares about the library, its position in the community, and the residents it serves. However, because of the new law, Jerry cannot rejoin the Board for at least four years, which is really unfortunate. Jerry’s service on the Board began in 1996. He has held every office and chaired several committees. His last term as President was in 2005. As the most tenured Board member, he leads the Nominating committee of past presidents. Also, he often served as a member of the Facilities committee and chaired it for the past 4 years. Obviously, it is one of his most satisfying committee assignments. In fact, Jerry was very instrumental in TCPL’s construction projects of the last decade. He served a pivotal negotiating role in the newly formed partnership Former TCPL Board of Trustees Presidents Van Phillips, Jerry Withered (center) and Dinah McClure. that ushered in the Campus Library at Ivy Tech. Also, Jerry’s influence with the land donor and his leadership in working with the architects for TCPL’s Klondike Branch contributed to its success. Jerry has displayed delight in the growth of the library system over the past 10 years. He absolutely recognizes the growth goes beyond the good of the library, as it translates into good for the community. Jerry’s varied personal interests include another devoted voluntary activity. He loves coaching youth baseball; influencing the work ethic, skill, and character of the younger boys with which he interacts. He proudly supports the careers of his own children and enjoys spending vacation time on the ski slopes. Jerry is one of two remaining Board members already in place when I joined TCPL in 2002. He has offered guidance, encouragement, and wisdom to me as well as to various Board members. He has always been direct about reminding me about what the library’s mission is and continues to be. Jerry has demonstrated a sincere interest in the well being of the library, the staff, the materials collection, and the facilities. As I said about Prella McBride, Jerry also has achieved a span of service that few can equally claim. Your fellow Board members, TCPL staff, and I salute you and wish you more than well in everything you do. Thank you Jerry! And thank you Mrs. Jo Withered for sharing him with us all these years. Tippecanoe Villa 5307 N. 50 W West Lafayette, IN 47906 Thanks to the continuing generosity of Tipmont REMC’s Operation Round Up, four language-learning stations and audio equipment will be part of the expanding services offered in the TCPL Technology Commons at the Downtown Library. Prior Tipmont gifts include donations to the Tippecanoe County/Ivy Tech Library, Klondike Branch Library, 2008 Downtown Library Youth Room renovation and more. September 27, 2011 Next steps: A library subscription for multi-lingual on-line language learning software will help users engage in selfpaced, interactive language and cultural learning. Three iMacs, microphones, and professional grade film editing and desktop software are the result of a $14,999 grant from The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette (CFGL). In addition to prior CFGL grants, this organization oversees investments by the TCPL Foundation. Next steps: This new equipment will allow customers to create and edit their own video projects, also produce more professional-looking print and electronic portfolios. A farewell gift-in-kind of 35 computers from Lafayette Life Insurance Company, a long-standing TCPL corporate friend and donor, arrived in early October. Thanks for your 2001 gift to one of America’s first joint public/academic libraries (Tippecanoe County/Ivy Tech Library) and so much more. We also are grateful for a recent Lafayette Savings Bank gift, other corporate gifts, and anonymous gifts received throughout the year. Next steps: The new TCPL Technology Commons opens in 2012. To complete this $250,000 project, at least $75,000 in individual and corporate gifts is still needed. Dear Kristin and Outreach program, I have always been a firm believer in keeping the mind growing and expanding no matter what age. You have helped the Tippecanoe Villa County Home towards achieving this worthwhile goal. The time and assistance shown to our residents in receiving library cards will help continue to nourish their minds. Thanks for making our residents feel special. You are special too!
