COURSE EVALUATION
Please read the following evaluation policy carefully. Your grade will be based on
assignments, mid-term & final exams, and attendance & participation in this course.
The assessment is weighted as follows.

Assignments : 20%

Mid-Term Exam I (Ch16-19) : 25%

Mid-Term Exam II (Ch20-23) : 25%

Final Exam (Ch24-26) : 25%

Attendance & Class Participation : 5%
(1) Assignments:
Assignment problems are given based on weekly lectures and will be made
available on MyAccountingLab a week before it is due. You are responsible to
complete each assignment on MyLab on time, i.e., before 11:59 am of its due date
(please refer to course schedule on p.5). Late submissions will NOT be accepted
(unless with appropriate proofs of emergencies/medical conditions and advance
notice). These assignments account for 20% of your grade.
(2) Two Mid-Term Exams and Final Exam:
Each exam weighs 25% of your grade. The first mid-term covers Ch16-19. The
second mid-term covers Ch20-23. The final exam covers Ch24-26. Each exam will
be two hours. Exam problems will be multiple choice questions (conceptual
questions, theoretical questions, and computation questions.
Note: a) You are required to bring #2 pencil & calculator with ONLY basic
functions to all exams, b) Make-up exams will only be given upon the validity of
the documentation explaining your absence from the exam, as confirmed by your
advisor. If you are missing the scheduled examination for any foreseeable reason
(for e.g. a pre-scheduled medical procedure, civic commitment, etc) you must
inform me well in advance of the examination and excuse yourself. If, on the other
hand, you miss the examination due to some unforeseeable reason, you must make
sure that you/someone acting on your behalf contacts me within 24 hours of the
exam (by email, preferably) and explains the situation. If you do not follow these
guidelines, then I am unable to give you a make-up examination even if you have
a valid reason for missing the exam.
(3) Attendance & Class Participation:
Students are expected to attend each class. Late arrivals and early departures are
both considered absence. Please note that performing unrelated activities in class is
considered absence as well (e.g. texting, chatting, sleeping or working on unrelated
tasks). Employment obligation will not be considered as excuses for being absent
from class. Emergencies, illness, court appearances will be seen as excused absence
conditional on appropriate proofs and/or notice in advance. You are encouraged to
participate in exercises/problems given in class. Attendance & Participation weigh
5% of your grade.
GRADE DISTRIBUTION
Your final letter grade is given based on and only based on your weighted overall
performance. More specifically, the grading scheme matches final grade letter with
numeric score as follows:
Final Grade
Weighted Score
A
90 and above
B+
85 – 89
B
80 – 84
C+
75 – 79
C
70 – 74
D
60 – 69
F
Below 60
Note: A handful of students ask for some type of “extra credit” arrangement
towards the end of the semester. “Extra credit” is a contradiction in terms: once a
grading policy has been publicly announced and distributed, “extra credit” amounts
to asking me to make a secret deal with just one student, and give him/her an
opportunity to improve his/her grade that I don’t make available to all the other
students in the class. It goes against every principle of fairness and transparency,
and will not be done in this class.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
1) Any violation of academic integrity is a serious offense and is subject to
appropriate penalty or sanction (http://academicintegrity.rutgers.edu/).
2) Students using electronic communicating devices in class (or during exams) are
considered disruptive behavior and an absence; they are subject to being
removed from class as it will seriously affect others.
3) Rutgers Business School Honor Code: “I pledge, on my honor, that I have
neither received nor given any unauthorized assistance on this examination
(assignment)".

Chapter 16 Introduction to Managerial Accounting
HOW DO WE LEARN IN THIS CLASS
1) Before class

Complete required readings before coming to class. I will let you know
the required readings for next class at the end of each class.
2) In class

Accounting is a practical discipline; every time I introduce a new
concept, we will hit the ground running and work through relevant
examples in class. You should revisit these examples at home.

Our sessions will be interactive and participatory. I’d like you all to
make comments and ask questions. Come well-fed, well-caffeinated,
and prepared to discuss. I won’t laugh at any of your comments,
questions or answers, and I won’t scold you for getting something
wrong.
3) After Class

After class, you go home, re-read the textbook and work on the assigned
homework problems to consolidate your learning. On my side, I will
post up full solutions to any problems we work out in class. From time
to time, I will also post additional notes, examples, etc based on
questions or discussions that pop up in class.

Please note that it is essential for you to do many other problems, in
addition to the assigned homework problems, until you feel comfortable
with the material.
