About Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the Phi Kappa Zeta Chapter
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. was founded January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in
Washington, D.C. Five coeds, Arizona Cleaver, Pearl Neal, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler and Fannie Pettie
were encouraged by Charles Robert Taylor and A. Langston Taylor, members of Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity, Inc. to form a sister organization. The sorority’s principles are Scholarship, Sisterly Love,
Service and “Finer Womanhood.”
Phi Kappa Zeta Chapter (PKZ) was chartered on December 5, 2007 in Woodbridge, VA by eight women
ranging in all professional backgrounds and age groups.
PKZ programming primarily focuses on
education/literacy, meeting the needs of women and children, and health/wellness.
The Phi Kappa Zeta Scholarship Fund
The Phi Kappa Zeta Scholarship Fund was established in January 2008. Shortly thereafter, the chapter
expanded the scholarship award into a scholarship program, known as the Miss Phi Kappa Zeta Program.
In addition to an opportunity to apply for scholarship awards, the program also offers young ladies
opportunities for personal enrichment.
Eligibility for the Miss Phi Kappa Zeta Program?
Applicants must meet the following Eligibility Requirements: Residency in Prince William County; High
school junior or senior; Minimum GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale)
Application packets must be received by December 8, 2012. Awards will be determined December 15,
2012.
What Makes The Miss Phi Kappa Zeta Program Unique?
Scholarship programs for young high school ladies are not a new concept. Most of these programs are
referred to as debutante balls or cotillions. However, unlike debutante balls and cotillions where the
participants primarily focus on raising funds and selling tickets for tables, we prefer our participants
focus on self-development (via the workshops and community service projects as this falls in line with
our sorority’s ideal of Finer Womanhood) and we take care of the majority of the financial burden for
them.
There are also scholarship programs where no connection between the applicant and the scholarship
awarding panel exists. The awards are given primarily based on the applicant’s “identity on paper.” The
Miss PKZ Program is designed to be a development program through personal enrichment and
relationship building. Because these are essential program elements, we will be instituting a mentorship
component in FY13. All participants in the Miss PKZ Program will be assigned a mentor within our
chapter. Our goal is to pair the young ladies with chapter members whose profession matches the
desired career paths of the participants. This will enable the young ladies to start building their
professional networks before they get to college.
Calendar
In September 2012, the participants will be finalized. The 2013 Program will begin in October 2012 with
an orientation meeting for all accepted applicants and their parents/guardians. During the 6-month
program, there will be activities twice a month (i.e. workshop, community service event, social activity,
etc.). It is anticipated that all workshops will be held on Sunday afternoons and service/social activities
will be held on Saturday afternoons – on a bi-weekly basis. Our Program will end with a formal pageant
in which participants are presented in April 2013.
Responsibilities and Expectations
Participants will have the opportunity to compete for scholarship awards. Despite the participant’s
financial investment in this program, each participant is also required to make a personal investment.
Each participant should be committed to attendance and full participation in the workshops, community
service projects, and social activities of this program. Each participant should adhere to all deadlines
and administrative requirements to include meetings and securing the minimum requirement of ads
($70) for the souvenir journal. Each participant shall recognize that this development program is
designed for the personal enrichment of all participants and shall do her part to ensure it is a pleasant
environment for all.
Financial Guidelines/Policy
A $65.00 participation fee is due upon submission of application of enrollment in the Miss Phi Kappa
Zeta Program. Payment of the fee reserves the participant a place in the program and is due by at the
time of application. All applications must be received by September 15. Each participant is also
responsible for $70 of ads for the souvenir journal. Fees for the ad sales will be due in February 2013.
Please note that the $65participant fee includes all the events that will occur during the 6-month
program. Payments should be made payable to Phi Kappa Zeta Chapter.
Registration fees and other funds are non-transferable and non-refundable.
Thank you for your interest in the Miss Phi Kappa Zeta Program. We hope to see you in October at our
Program orientation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Scholarship Chair:
