The Bluebonnet Regional Branch Teen Room Becomes a Reality!
The opportunity to create this new dedicated Teen Room
arose because of the Genealogy Collection’s relocation to
the new Main Library in November 2014. In anticipation
of this move, staff from Library Administration and the
Library’s Branch Services Division consulted with the CityParish Dept of Public Works in fall of 2013 to plan the scope
of work. This involved not only
designing the new Teen Room but
also re-working the original Teen
area to include several collaborative
study rooms/small meeting rooms
plus space for AV collection and
additional computers for adults. The design also allowed the creation
of a new, dynamic and more visible
entrance to the Children’s Room.
Tipton Associates was selected
by the City-Parish Architectural
Selection Committee in December
2013 to design and oversee the
multi-phase project which began in the summer of
2015. The project was delayed briefly as architects adjusted
designs to accommodate some of the library’s infrastructure
that was previously hidden in the walls. Throughout the
project, architects from Tipton Associates and the crew of
the Charles Carter Construction Company have worked
hard with Library staff to minimize disruption. The overall concept for this new Teen Room may be found
at http://www.ebrpl.com/lboc/Documents/BBR_061515_
Renovation_Project. It was based on experiences elsewhere
in the Library system as well as conversations with teens and
teen advocates. Teens have responded positively to the fresh
and lively designs of their “own” spaces at the new Fairwood
Branch Library and new Main Library at Goodwood; having
a dedicated space for teens is one of the major features of the
Branch Library Assessment Plan. http://www.ebrpl.com/
lboc/Documents/Branch_Assessment_Presentation.pdf Offering a space clearly defined for their use means that
teens are not only able to work as individuals or in groups,
meet up with other teens, engage in casual reading as well
as serious study, but also enjoy increased opportunities for
passive and active programming and access to a special
Maker Space which will allow teens hands-on practice with
new and emerging technologies.
Library at Goodwood. However we felt strongly that the
features and attributes which had proven to be so successful
at the new Fairwood Branch would translate well to the
Bluebonnet Regional Branch space. The other teen spaces
are popular and heavily utilized.”
Watts adds “The Bluebonnet Regional Branch renovation
project gives us a chance to take all
the dynamic and exciting concepts
proven through our experience at
the Fairwood Branch and Main
Library, and now put them into
practice at Bluebonnet Regional
Branch. This is a precursor to
implementation of the Branch
Assessment Plan which can now
become the Branch Improvement
Plan. As we go through the next
several years, patrons will see
more comprehensive planning as we address renovations
at the Jones Creek Regional Branch, Greenwell Springs
Road Regional Branch and then the next five branches on
the list.”
Still to come in Phase I of the Project:
• Transparent sliders open to reveal a dedicated program
space which can double as general seating when not in
use for a Teen program.
• The Maker Space is situated to also be available for use
by adults, depending on scheduling.
Phase II should begin soon: • New AV browsing area in the original Teen area
• Additional adult computers in the original Teen area
• Collaborative Study Rooms/Small Meeting Rooms for
adults in the original Teen area
• Relocating entrance to the Children’s Room
• Adjustments to the Circulation Area
• Estimated completion date is March 13
The Maker Space will include:
• A digital lab with PC and Mac with special software
• 3D printer
• Video camera, blue & green screens
•
Arduino kits, Snap Circuit kits, MaKey MaKey,
LEGO®
•
No-tech making such as knitting and painting
materials
Library Director Spencer Watts notes, “Interestingly,
planning for the new Bluebonnet Regional Branch Teen
Room began not only before the Branch Assessment Study
was prepared, but also before we moved into the new Main

East Baton Rouge Parish Library
MCN writes: “The judges really liked
the beautiful use of materials, and said the
library’s form is exceptional, awarding the
project the award in the Metal Roof-New
category. They also liked how the entryway
with the cantilevered volume above the glass,
along with how the wall panels fold into a
roofing system, creates a cool-looking building.
“This new library branch is a focal point of
the local community park in which it resides,
and will serve the citizens of Baton Rouge
and the parish of East Baton Rouge well,”
says Daniel Nicely, managing director at
VMZINC-US. “This award is a testament to
the innovative work done by great architects
and contractors working with VMZINC. We
are thankful to be a part of such work.” Several types of zinc panels totaling
40,000 square feet are used throughout
the project in both horizontal and vertical
orientations. A natural material, zinc does
not require regular maintenance and in
fact, patinas over time. Designers were
particularly interested in the way that the
zinc’s warm gray tones complement other
materials used in the building, especially
the locally produced St. Joe brick.
The zinc cladding is a new material for
the Library system and its use in several
inventive ways adds texture and definition
to the façade. The project was designed by
The Library Design Collaborative, a joint
venture between project manager Cockfield
Jackson Architects, Baton Rouge, La.;
interior architect of record Dewberry, Dallas;
and exterior architect of record Tipton
Associates, Baton Rouge. Metal installer
for the project was Roof Tech Inc.

Storytime at the Library
Storytime gives children an excellent introduction to books
and the Library, increases their attention spans and develops
their social skills by involving them in stories, poetry and songs.
The Children’s Services staff hopes Storytime will be an enjoyable
experience for each child, leading to a lifelong love of books
and reading. You are always welcome to attend Storytime with
your child. We offer seven different Storytime
formats. Since children develop at different
rates, you may talk with one of our Library
staff members to place your child in a younger or older group.
For more information, call your local Library. Organized groups
must reserve a date and time other than those listed below.
