T he Library Board of Control received the 2015
Annual Report Summary at their meeting in
February. Numbers were up in every major indicator: collection, circulation, gate count, programming, meeting room use, computer and Wi-Fi use, database use, outreach visits and reference and information.
Highlights of the year included implementation of two new programs: placing VOLUMEN computeruse cards in local schools, and launching 1,000 Books
Before Kindergarten. The Library also earned local and national awards, including recognition as a
Landmark Library and as a 5 Star Library.
Director Spencer Watts had this to say about the
Annual Report. “These 2015 numbers underscore what the Library is all about: Creating an environment of discovery, where our patrons can learn more ... do more ... and achieve more. These statistics reflect that we a have a population that makes good use of the Library and the opportunities it presents. We’ve listened to what people have asked for and they have responded to the new services and new spaces with enthusiasm. We will keep working hard to improve, by offering better collections and better services in better designed spaces.”

It’s never too early to start reading to our children, and research has proven over and over again that kids who read, succeed. Last March, the Library began
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a new initiative to encourage parents and caregivers to build a reading habit with young children. The rules are simple:
READ to your child, and then read some more … even repeats are allowed! Keep track and write down what you’ve read with your children. You’ll reach 1,000 books before you know it. As an added benefit, your child will approach kindergarten ready to learn.
In the past 12 months more than 2,200 children have registered with the program. Readers earned an incentive at each major milestone. Hundreds of children have completed the first stages of the program by reading 250, 500 and 750 books, and an amazing number have already completed reading the first 1,000 books!
These children and their caregivers will be honored at a special celebration in the Children’s Room at the
Main Library. Each child will receive a copy of authorillustrator Will Hillenbrand’s Off We Go!: A Bear and
Mole Story , and as a special treat, Hillenbrand will be there in person to congratulate each child. A great

entire program and is even used on the new children’s
Library cards.
The program is so simple, it can be adapted for classroom or group use. Robin Murphy, pre-school class teacher at Westdale Elementary, decided to work the program into her regular classroom routine. Murphy and other readers have been logging the books read to her class of 20 children since the beginning of the school year, and guest readers such as the school’s principal and author Johnette Downing have joined the ranks of parents who are assisting in the program. Even the
5 th graders at the Westdale have helped, volunteering to read to the pre-schoolers.
Superintendent Warren Drake has promised to come and read the one-thousandth book.
A reading “growth chart” marks their progress, and children bring visitors to the wall to show how many books they’ve read. The children’s pride and joy is evident as they reach each new milestone and earn their stickers, bags and other incentives.
Since January, the children have become independent readers and they’ve really started filling

in those reading logs! The children are now bringing in books to share with the class, and reading to each other, and it is evident that reading is continuing at home. Murphy is confident that her children’s reading skills will show significant gains.
Children’s Coordinator Pabby Arnold has been thrilled with the sign up and completion rate, and urges parents, grandparents, caregivers and teachers to not only sign up but to keep reading! For more information, visit the children's page at www.ebrpl.com

Storytime gives children an excellent introduction to books and the Library, increases their attention spans and develops their social skills by involving them in stories, poetry and songs.
The Children’s Services staff hopes Storytime will be an enjoyable experience for each child, leading to a lifelong love of books and reading. You are always welcome to attend Storytime with your child. We offer seven different Storytime formats. Since children develop at different rates, you may talk with one of our Library staff members to place your child in a younger or older group.
