UCLA Logon ID
• UCLA Logon ID is needed to access your
BOL account. The UCLA Logon ID is often
used as the authentication mechanism for
campus services
• UCLA Logon was previously called Bruin
OnLine ID or BOLid
• UCLA Logon tools are self-serve, found
online at https://logon.ucla.edu/
UCLA Logon Needed for BOL
• Eligible UCLA Logon IDs have BOL
services provisioned
• Non-UID Logon IDs do not get BOL
services

Bruin OnLine – Email
• BOL provides an email account:
– uclalogon@ucla.edu
• Alias – use to keep username private
and/or provide acquaintances with a more
obvious email address
– firstname.lastname@ucla.edu
• 75MB mailbox (plans to increase in near
future)
• You can check your email using the BOL
webmail client or a third-party email client

Bruin OnLine – Wireless
• With a wireless-enabled laptop or handheld
device, you can connect to the UCLA network
– 802.11b compliant wireless network interface card
– Authenticate using the authentication portal or, for
secure sessions, use a VPN client
• Libraries and Green Areas are “portal-enabled”

Bruin OnLine – Proxy Server
• BOL provides remote access to sites that
are normally restricted only to the UCLA
campus (Library journals and databases)
• If you use another Internet Service Provider
(not BOL), you will need to use the proxy to
access restricted UCLA sites from other
networks

Bruin OnLine – VPN
• Set up a secure Virtual Private Network
between your computer and UCLA’s
campus network
• Allows secure access to campus
resources (wireless network, software,
library resources, etc.)

Bruin OnLine – Modems
• BOL provides a dial-up modem pool for
off-campus access
– 768 modems with V.90 (56K) capability
– 4 hour session limits
– Never have any busy signals!

Bruin OnLine – Other Services
• Mailing lists - you can request the creation of a
mailing list, which allows discussion on a certain
subject to a group of interested individuals
– You can request a list by filling out the form at
http://lists.ucla.edu/signup.html/
• BOL provides a Usenet news server
(news.ucla.edu) with over 38,000 newsgroups
on any topic imaginable

• BOL provides software for using BOL

Macintosh
– CuteFTP, Sophos Anti-Virus, Spy Sweeper

Account creations are verified with
