Coat and Warm Clothing Drive to Combine with Diaper Drive in Fall Event
The Houston Bar Association’s annual Fall Coat and Warm
Clothing Drive and the annual Spring Children’s Clothing and Diaper
Drive will be combined for the first time this year into one drive,
scheduled for October 6 - 17. The drive is sponsored by the HBA
Campaign for the Homeless Committee, chaired by Greg Ulmer of
Baker Hostetler LLP.
The drive will collect gently-used coats, sweaters and other clothing items for adults, teens, infants and children, as well as unopened
packages of disposable diapers. Cash donations are also welcome
to purchase disposable diapers and to support Houston Dress for
Success. For every $75 donation, Dress for Success can purchase
one new interview-appropriate suit for low-income women who are
entering the workforce. Checks for either diapers or Dress for Success
should be made payable to the Houston Bar Foundation and sent to
the HBA office at 1111 Bagby, FLB Suite 200, Houston, TX 77002.
Please indicate whether your donation is for diapers or Dress for Success.
All law firms and legal departments of five or more attorneys will
receive a letter from HBA President Carter Crow, asking them to
organize and support a drive in their office. Donations from individuals are welcome and encouraged. Items may be delivered to the HBA
office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through
Friday, from October 6-17. The office is located at 1111 Bagby
Street, FLB Suite 200, Houston, 77002. Please call Bonnie Simmons at 713-759-1133 or email her at bonnies@hba.org for delivery
instructions, as well as general questions about the drive.
Volunteers from UH Law Center’s Black Law Students Association
helped sort clothing during last year’s drive.
Open Doors to Reading through HBA Fall Book Drive
“There’s so much more to a book than just the reading,” said
beloved children’s book author and illustrator Maurice Sendak.
Help children, teens and adults learn the power of reading by
participating in the annual Fall Book Drive, sponsored by the
HBA Lawyers for Literacy Committee. The drive benefits local
homeless shelters and literacy projects by collecting gently-used or new books. Books may
be dropped off at the HBA office from September 8-15, 2014.
The drive collects books for readers of all ages, with a particular emphasis on books for
young children and young readers. Last year’s Fall Book Drive collected 22,819 books for
34 different organizations. Shayne Newell of Baker Botts L.L.P. is the chair of this year’s
Lawyers for Literacy Committee
Books may be dropped off at the Houston Bar Association office between the hours
of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office is located at 1111 Bagby
Street, FLB Suite 200, Houston, 77002. Please contact Bonnie Simmons at 713-759-1133
or at bonnies@hba.org for delivery instructions. If you are unable to deliver the books, you
may contact Bonnie to arrange for a member of the Lawyers for Literacy Committee to

Adopt a Family for Holidays through
AIDS Outreach Program
The HBA’s AIDS Outreach Committee is seeking law firms, corporations and individuals to make holiday dreams come true for families
touched by HIV/AIDS. Each participating firm or organization “adopts”
one or more needy families or individuals, who provide them with a “wish
list” of items needed. The adopting entity then uses its best efforts to provide the items on the list and deliver them to the family or individual. The
committee hopes to have all adopting firms or organizations signed up by
September 16, in order to plan for the holiday project.
The co-chairs of the AIDS Outreach Committee are Maine Goodfellow,
Bracewell & Giuliani LLP and Travis Torrence, Shell Oil Company. To
adopt a family, contact Bonnie Simmons at bonnies@hba.org or at 713759-1133.

HBA Online Judicial Preference Poll Opens Early September
2014-2015 HBA Dues Must be Current to Participate
The Houston Bar Association’s 2014
Judicial Preference Poll is scheduled to open
for online voting on September 8, as of Bulletin press time. In 2013, the HBA moved to
online voting for all judicial polls and questionnaires. Paper polls/questionnaires are no
longer mailed to members. The Preference
Poll allows members to indicate which candidate they support in contested judicial and
some administrative races in the November
election. The Judicial Polls Committee is cochaired by Jacqueline Smith, attorney at law,
and Brian Albrecht of Norton Rose Fulbright.
Only HBA members who are current
on their 2014-2015 dues and have a valid
email address on file with the HBA will be
able to participate.
Here is how the online poll will work:
• All members will receive an email at their
email address on file with the HBA, providing a link for the member to securely access
their poll.
• Members will go to the link and follow
instructions for completing the questionnaire.
You will be asked to create a password. If
6
September/October 2014 Houston Bar Bulletin
you voted online in a previous poll, you may
use the same password.
• When finished, members will submit their
responses as directed to a secure site.
• Each member’s responses are tied to an
individual, secure account that cannot be
accessed from a different email, forwarded,
duplicated or otherwise compromised.
• Responses will be tabulated and reported to
the HBA at the end of the voting period.
• Please provide the HBA with a current
email address, if you do not already have
one on file. This is the only way you will be
able to participate in the judicial evaluation
process.
If you have questions about your membership status or email, please contact the
Membership Department at 713-759-1133 or

Make Justice Happen
Houston Volunteer Lawyers Updates
ExxonMobil Law Management
Helps Victims of Domestic Abuse
On July 16, ExxonMobil General Counsel Jack Balagia led
the Law Management Pro Bono Clinic for the third year in a row.
This year, volunteers staffed the first Houston Area Women’s
Center Pro Bono Legal Clinic at its headquarters on Waugh Drive.
The clinic was a collaboration between ExxonMobil’s Pro Bono
Program, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, Houston Area Women’s
Center (HAWC), Tahirih Justice Center, and Texas Rio Grande
Legal Aid.
ExxonMobil’s law managers and interpreters spent approximately two hours interviewing 20 clients to evaluate their claims
for protection under United States immigration laws due to family
violence. For the clients, it was an empowering first step toward
independence. For ExxonMobil volunteers - 17 lawyers and three
support personnel who served as interpreters - it was a powerful
service experience with meaningful impact. Houston Volunteer
Lawyers would like to thank ExxonMobil, HAWC, Tahirih Justice
Center and Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid.
Thanks to these volunteers: (Law management) Jack Balagia, William
Buck, Randall Ebner, Judith Glaubig, Robert Johnson, Joann Lee; (attorneys) Estelle Bakun, Steven Dickerson, Charles Felice, Karen Moreno,
Kimberly Pilcher, Miles Prillaman,Celeste Quiralte, James Roach, Stephanie Slobin, Steve Timmins, Phillip Woo; and (support staff) Linda Araiza,
Aracely Casey, Maria Flores, Rose Williams.
Chevron and King & Spalding Team Up to
Help Families at Texas Children’s Hospital
On July 29, lawyers and
paralegals from Chevron and
King & Spalding provided free
legal advice to 31 families of
patients at Texas Children’s
Hospital in the first-ever Texas
Children’s Medical-Legal Partnership volunteer clinic. The
Chevron and King & Spalding
clinic was held at the Texas
attorneys volunteer at the Texas
Children’s Pavilion for Women
Children’s Hospital legal clinic.
and helped families seeking assistance with special education, guardianship, landlord/tenant, and
caregiver formalization issues. Thank you, Chevron and King &
Spalding!
Legal Community Responds to Border Crisis
Thousands of children are fleeing their homes in Central
America due to a lack of economic opportunity and threats from
gangs. The dangerous journey that these children are making to
the United States - mostly without adult supervision - is a more
appealing option than the conditions they face at home. Once
they arrive in the United States, however, many of these unaccompanied children are detained and face nearly immediate court
proceedings without representation.
The HBA, Houston Volunteer Lawyers and other professional
and community groups are teaming up to help by co-sponsoring
training programs and offering volunteer opportunities to help
stem this crisis. If you are interested in volunteering to represent
an unaccompanied child in immigration proceedings, you can find
specific pro bono opportunities and CLE materials on the Houston
Volunteer Lawyers portal at: https://portal.makejusticehappen.org.
For a link to CLE training videos, visit www.hba.org.

Night Court 2014: Law and All That Jazz – Night Court 2014
takes the stage October 15-18 at the Hobby Center. The year is 1920.
The jazz is loud and the movies are silent. Suffrage, prohibition,
racketeering, money laundering, political activism, entertainment censorship - the 1920s was rife with corruption and morality. A perfect
setting for Night Court 2014: Law and All That Jazz. With music
from “Chicago” and “Frozen” and period icons such as Billie Holiday,
Jean Harlow, and Cab Calloway, Law and All That Jazz is a veritable
Who’s Who of the Roaring Twenties. Houston’s Night Court is an
annual musical comedy written by lawyers and performed by lawyers,
with an orchestra and crew full of lawyers. It has supported local legal
charities for over 20 years. For ticket information or to donate to this
great cause go to www.nightcourt.org.
LegalLine On Call Volunteers – The HBA’s LegalLine program has
a need for on-call volunteers who may be willing to fill in when the

and third Wednesday of each month. Attorneys volunteer for two-hour
shifts, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. or from 7:00-9:00 p.m., answering calls
from the public to provide answers to legal questions, simple legal
advice and other resources for assistance. If you are interested in being
on the on-call list, please contact Ashley Steininger at ashleyg@hba.
org or 713-759-1133.
Speakers Bureau Volunteers – Are you interested in speaking to
schools, senior groups, community associations, churches or professional groups about your areas of practice? The HBA Speakers Bureau
is always looking for attorneys for its volunteer panel. If you would
like to find out more about the Speakers Bureau, contact Bonnie Simmons at bonnies@hba.org or 713-759-1133.
