CourseDescription
Thisintroductorycourseisdesignedtoacquaintstudentswiththemajorconceptsand
issuesingender,sexuality,andwomen’sstudies.Wewillreadcontemporaryandclassic
textsfromavarietyofdisciplinaryperspectivestoexplorearangeoftopics,including
women’sandLGBTQactivismintheUnitedStates,keytheoreticalconcepts(e.g.,sex,
gender,sexuality,performativity,intersectionality,feminisms,oppression,privilege,
essentialism,socialconstruction,queeringcategoriesofdifference,etc.),representationsof
identityinpopularculture,healthandreproductivejustice,thedivisionoflaborinthehome
andworkplace,genderedviolence,etc.Takentogether,thesetopicswillallowforcritical
examinationofhowgenderandsexuality–indynamicinteractionwithothersocially
constitutedmarkersofdifference–giveformandmeaningtoourembodiedexperiences
andsenseofourselves,shapeourideasaboutandinteractionswithothers,andserveas
structuringprinciplesofsocialorganization.InfulfillmentoftheUniversityofPittsburgh’s
writingrequirement,thiswriting-intensivecoursewillalsosupportstudents’development
asacademicwritersthroughsustainedfocusonwritingascraft,process,andproduct.In
addition,GSWS0100qualifiesasasocialsciencecoursewithintheuniversity’sgeneral
educationframework.
CourseObjectives
Bytheendofthesemester,studentswill:
• demonstrateanintroductoryunderstandingofthefieldofgender,sexuality,and
women’sstudies,andutilizearangeofinterdisciplinarytoolsandmethodsfor
understandingandanalyzingsex,gender,andsexualityinculture.
• developarichcomprehensionofbothfeministandqueerapproachestothesocial
andculturalconstructionofgender,sex,andsexuality.
• constructandenhanceacriticalunderstandingofintersectionality,includingan
awarenessofgenderanditscomplexintersectionswithothersocial,cultural,and
biologicalcategories,includingbutnotlimitedtosex,race,ethnicity,class,
nationality,sexuality,ability,andage.
• cultivatealanguageframeworkforthoughtfullyarticulatingthecriticalvocabulary
inthefieldofgender,sexualityandwomen’sstudies.

CourseRequirements
Attendance(50points)
IntroductiontoGender,Sexuality,andWomen’sStudiesisadiscussion-orientedcourse.
Therefore,yourpresenceiscrucial.Eachstudentwillbeginthetermwith50possible
attendancepoints.Youwillnotincuranypenaltyforyourfirsttwoabsences.Aftertwo
absences,youwilllose10pointsperadditionalabsence.(Forthepurposesofyour
attendancegrade,Iwillnotdistinguishbetweenexcusedandunexcusedabsences.)Missing
morethaneightofthetwenty-eightclassmeetingsisgroundsforafailinggrade.Ifissues
comeupthatinterferewithyourabilitytoattendclass,itisyourresponsibilitytoletme
know.
PreparationandParticipation(200points)
Preparationandparticipationareequallyvitaltothesuccessofthecourse.Inordertobe
activeandthoughtfulparticipants,youmustprepareforclassbycarefullyreadingthe
assignedmaterials.Inaddition,youarerequiredtobringtheassignedreadingstoclass.I
expectstudentstocometoeachandeveryclassmeetingreadytoreflecton,discuss,and
writeaboutthetopic(s)underconsideration.
Yourpreparationandparticipationgradeiscomprisedoftwocomponents:
• aholisticappraisalofthequantityandqualityofyourcontributionstoclassroom
discussionsandactivities(125points)
• yourperformanceonin-classwritingexercises(75points)
Overthecourseofthesemester,studentswillcompletefourin-classwritingexercises.
Theseexercisesaredesignedtosharpenstudents’writingskillsandpromotetheir
engagementwithcourseconceptsandtexts.Eachexercisewillbeworth25points.Students
willbepermittedtodropthelowestoftheirfourscores.TheseexerciseswillNOTbe
announcedinadvanceandCANNOTbemadeup.

Ourclassroomwillbeaspacewhereweexploreavarietyofissuesrelatedto
identity.Mygoalisforeveryonetofeelcomfortableexploringtheiremerging
understandingofthethemesandconceptsatissueinthecourse.Inorderto
promotethisenvironment,itiscriticalthateachofuscommitstoactivelistening
andthoughtfulengagementwithothers'contributions.Wemustalsocommitto
cultivatingandmaintaininganatmosphereofmutualrespectandcivility,
particularlywhenwedisagree.Let’sbeginthesemesterwiththerecognitionthat
eachofusisuniquelypositionedvis-à-viscategoriesofidentitylikegender,
sexuality,race,ethnicity,nationality,class,ability,age,etc.Ouruniquepositioning
meansthatweallhavevaluableinsightstoshareandthatwe’lllearnbestwhen
weapproachcoursetexts,discussions,andoneanotherwithopenness.Texting,
checkingFacebook,and/orsurfingthenetduringclassarestrictlyincompatible
withthoughtfulparticipationintheclassroomcommunity.

NoteonGender-InclusiveandNon-SexistLanguage
Languageisgender-inclusiveandnon-sexistwhenweusewordsthataffirmand
respecthowpeopledescribe,express,andexperiencetheirgender.Justassexist
languageexcludeswomen’sexperiences,non-gender-inclusivelanguageexcludes
theexperiencesofindividualswhoseidentitiesmaynotfitthegenderbinary,
and/orwhomaynotidentifywiththesextheywereassignedatbirth.Identities
includingtrans,intersex,andgenderqueerreflectpersonaldescriptions,
expressions,andexperiences.Gender-inclusive/non-sexistlanguageacknowledges
peopleofanygender(forexample,firstyearstudentversusfreshman,chair
versuschairman,humankindversusmankind,etc.).Italsoaffirmsnon-binary
genderidentifications,andrecognizesthedifferencebetweenbiologicalsexand

GSWSEventAttendanceandResponsePapers(75pointsx2=150points)
StudentsarerequiredtoattendTWOcampusand/orcommunityeventsthataddress
genderand/orsexuality.Asafollow-uptoeachevent,studentswillsubmitashortresponse
paper(2–2.5pages,double-spaced,12pt.font).Inthepaper,yourtaskistosummarizethe
contentoftheeventANDdemonstrateyouractiveengagementwiththeissuesthatitraises.
Responsepaperscanincludepersonalreactionsbutmustalsodrawoncourseconceptsand
readingstomakesenseofthesubstantivecontentoftheevent.Thereisacalendarof
eligibleeventsinthesyllabusandonCourseWeb.IwillupdatethecalendaronCourseWeb
andalertstudentstoupcomingeventsthroughoutthesemester.Thefirstresponsepaper

Oneofthecentralgoalsofthiscourseistomakethefamiliarstrangebyprovidingyouwith
anewsetofconceptuallensesthroughwhichtoviewandevaluateyourexperiencesand
theworldaroundyou.Toputcourseconceptsandideastowork,youwillinterviewan
olderpersoninyourlifeabouthowgenderand/orsexuality–inconjunctionwithrace,
ethnicity,nationality,class,ability,age,etc.–haveshapedthisperson’ssenseofselfand
theiropportunities.Inwritingthepaper,youraimwillbetwofold:(1)toidentifyand
describetwoorthreedefiningmomentsinyourinterviewee’slife,and(2)todeploy
relevantconceptsdrawnfromcoursetextsanddiscussionsinordertomakesenseofthe
dynamicsofgenderand/orsexualityatplayinthesemoments.Thepapermustbe7-8
pages(double-spaced,12pt.font).Afirst,abbreviateddraft(3.5-4pages,double-spaced,12

youenvisionapplyinginsightsfromgender,sexuality,andwomen’sstudiestoyour
academicdisciplineand/orotheraspectsofyourlife,andhowyou’vedevelopedasan
academicwriter.ThepapermustbesubmittedviaCourseWebbynoonon
Wednesday,April20th(i.e.thefinaldayofclass).Furtherdetailsaboutthis
