Graduate student position available
Rutgers Newark, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
Dr. Patrick Shafto invites applicants for an open graduate student position in his new Cognitive and Data Sciences (CoDaS)
lab at Rutgers University–Newark. The position is ideal for a student with a strong background in pure mathematics.
Start date can be as soon as January 2016. Review of applications will begin immediately.
Dr. Patrick Shafto
Henry Rutgers Term Chair in Data Science
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
Dr. Shafto has over 40 publications and conference
proceedings spanning Cognitive Science, Machine Learning,
Cognitive Development, and Education. He has recently
joined Rutgers–Newark to build a Data Sciences program
that integrates Mathematics, Computer Science, and other
sciences. The open graduate student position is uniquely
suited for a student who has a strong mathematical
foundation and wishes to pursue training in pure math, and
applications to contemporary problems in cognition, machine
learning, and data science.
The Cognitive and Data Sciences Lab (CoDaS)
The goal of research in the lab is to provide a fundamental
understanding into interaction and learning between humans
and machines by formalizing the logic of human learning in
computational algorithms built on strong mathematical
foundations. The lab is currently composed of 4 postdoctoral
researchers and one graduate student researching
computational accounts of cooperation and interactionism in
learning and choice, optimized reality, social cognitive
development, machine teaching, and the automation of
cumulative science. Research in the lab is supported by the 3
grants from the National Science Foundation and the office
of the Chancellor at Rutgers–Newark.
Interested candidates should contact Dr. Shafto via email: patrick.shafto@gmail.edu.
