CWU’s World Wine Program offers a variety of
opportunities for an exciting career in the wine
industry. Academic programs include a Global
Wine Studies degree, a Wine Trade and Tourism
minor and an intensive Wine Trade Professional
Certificate. CWU graduates have strong wine
business skills and are prepared to pursue careers in
winery and vineyard management, wine marketing,
merchandising, wholesale, retail, e-commerce,
distribution, import/export, consulting, journalism,
tourism, event management, hospitality and more.
Surrounded by the beautiful vineyards of the Walla
Walla Valley, the Institute for Enology and Viticulture at WWCC provides students with hands-on experience in winemaking, viticulture practices, and
wine marketing and sales. With several acres of
teaching vineyards and a bonded winery, students
actively participate in vineyard management and
winemaking. The institute offers an Associate Degree in Applied Arts and Sciences in Enology and
Viticulture, a Fermentation Science Certificate, a Viticulture Science Certificate, as well as seminars and
short courses for the wine industry.
WVC’s curriculum serves the needs of the quickly
growing and highly sophisticated wine industry in
Washington State, including a two-quarter viticulture program in Spanish, specifically designed for
the industry’s workforce, and newly formed partnerships with Yakima Valley Community College
and local high schools. High school students can
now work towards a transfer or non-transfer degree
in agriculture with several career choices. WVC is
expanding its services to include a degree program
in Viticulture in partnership with Yakima Valley
Community College.
Columbia Basin College (CBC)
Pasco, WA
Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC)
Yakima & Grandview, WA
CBC offers a short term certificate in Wine Room
Attendant. This program prepares students to work
in tasting rooms and other settings where wine is
served. Community education classes are offered in
food and wine pairing as well as wine appreciation
and tasting. Students may also complete an A.A. degree with an emphasis in Agriculture enabling transfer to WSU Tri Cities.
South Seattle Community College (SSCC)
Seattle, WA
Washington State University (WSU)
Pullman and Tri-Cities, WA
SSCC’s Wine Technology degrees include Winemaking, Wine Marketing and Sales, and Food and Wine
Pairing. Nearly 1,000 cases of wine are produced
each year at SSCC’s on-site winery where winemaking students, trained in fermentation science and
lab work, pick and crush grapes and see the wines
through to final production. Marketing students prepare materials to sell the wines and manage wine
events. Food and Wine Pairing students utilize their
training by preparing food and managing on-campus
events.
WSU offers graduate, undergraduate, and certificate
programs in horticulture with an option in Viticulture and Enology (V&E) on both the Pullman and
Tri-Cities campuses. Two-year continuing education
certificate programs in V&E are offered at the WSU
Extension. Non-credit, professional certificate programs are tailored for non-degree students interested
in wine grape growing and winemaking. Students
attending Walla Walla or Yakima Valley Community Colleges can transfer into WSU’s V&E option.
WSU will soon offer a B.S. in V&E.
YVCC has a state of the art teaching facility located
at its Grandview campus that includes a teaching
winery, laboratory, classroom, tasting room, barrel and case storage and two incubator (start-up)
winery spaces. Through the Vineyard and Winery
Technology Program, students develop a diversified knowledge of viticulture, enology, mathematics and applied sciences that will give them the skill
sets to be a valuable asset both in practice and as a
transfer student at a four-year university. Students
can obtain an Associate’s Degree in Vineyard Technology and in Winery Technology.
The Washington Wine
Industry Foundation offers a limited number of scholarships to students in
the fields of viticulture and enology. Visit
their website at www.washingtonwinefoundation.org to learn more about the
organization and their scholarship program.
