Todd K. Rosengart, MD, FACS, FACC (Founder)
Dr. Todd K. Rosengart is a Professor and Chairman of the Michael E. DeBakey
Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He also holds the DeBakey-Bard Chair of Surgery, and is Professor of Heart and Vascular
Disease at the Texas Heart Institute. Before arriving in Houston, he was
Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chief of
Cardiothoracic Surgery at SUNY-Stony Brook, and was Co-Director of The Stony
Brook University Medical Center Heart Center.
Dr. Rosengart joined Stony Brook School of Medicine in January 2006 as chief of cardiothoracic surgery. In 2009, he was appointed chairman of surgery, after serving as interim chairman for a year. During his tenure as chairman, he continued to serve as chief of cardiothoracic surgery and co-director of the Stony Brook Heart Institute. Under the leadership of Dr.
Rosengart, the Department of Surgery grew and prospered. When he became the interim chairman of surgery in 2008, they had 27 full-time faculty members; upon his departure the Department had nearly
50 clinicians, educators, and research faculty members. The number of hospital surgical procedures performed by the Department of Surgery also grew over 30% during the four years of Dr. Rosengart's leadership, topping 8,000 for the first time in their history, and the revenues of the Department grew from $25 million in 2008-09 to $36 million in 2011-12.
Stony Brook School of Medicine research and education programs, likewise, prospered under Dr.
Rosengart's leadership, as seen in the launch of the new Surgical Skills Center, their highly successful annual Resident Research Days and a department research seed grant program, and in the full accreditation with commendation of the General Surgery Residency program, as well as its three fellowship programs.
Dr. Rosengart was previously the inaugural Owen L. Coon Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Evanston
Northwestern Healthcare and Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University School of Medicine in
Chicago (1999). Prior to that, Dr. Rosengart was Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the
Weill Cornell Medical College, Associate Attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon at New York Presbyterian
Hospital (where he performed one of the world’s first open-heart gene therapy procedures), and Visiting
Associate Professor of Surgery at Columbia University. Dr. Rosengart received his medical doctorate from Northwestern University in 1983 and was in the prestigious Medical Honors Program there. He completed his residency training at New York University (NYU Medical Center; 1989), and his fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery at New York Hospital (1991).
He also served as a medical staff fellow from 1985 to 1987 in the Surgery Branch of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and as an honorary senior registrar in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, England.
In addition to his clinical pursuits, his primary research interest is in the field of new blood vessel development (arteriogenesis) and gene therapy - for the purpose of creating “biologic bypasses”. Dr.

Rosengart currently runs an NIH-funded laboratory in this field and is a recipient of numerous honors and research grants in this and other areas. He holds twelve patents, including those for a method of inducing angiogenesis and is the author of well over 150 peer-reviewed articles, editorials, reviews and book chapters.
Additionally to his institutional and research duties, Dr. Rosengart is currently Editor of Seminars in
Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and has served on the editorial board of The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery – both premier journals for cardiac surgery. He has been a manuscript reviewer for journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, and Annals of Thoracic
Surgery. He is currently a member of the NHLBI BTSS study section, and has chaired the American Heart
Association Biotechnology and Bioengineering Study Section. He is a fellow of the American College of
Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, American Society of Gene Therapy, Andrew Morrow
Society of Cardiac Surgeons, Association of Academic Surgeons, International Society for Minimally
Invasive Cardiac Surgery, Society of University Surgeons, Society of Surgical Chairs, American Surgical
Association, Texas Surgical Association, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the American College of
Cardiology, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, and the New
York Surgical Society.
As a physician-entrepreneur, Dr. Rosengart is co-founder and board member of Vitals.com (MDx, LLC), a leading health provider search and physician/patient interface website with over 13 million monthly visits. He was an initial advisor and investor in Emmi Solutions, and has served on numerous scientific and corporate advisory boards.
Dr. Rosengart was one of the pioneers in the field of gene therapy, with work beginning in the early
1990s, and performing the world's first open-heart gene therapy. He now leads a team of scientists engaged in the study of cardiac cellular reprogramming.
