annual 2 010 - 2 011 report kelly kl att © I KIRK ADAMS BOARD CHAIR am proud to present this Annual Report from the Reif Arts Council for the period from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. I hope this helps you understand how this organization is being managed and the impact it has on OUR community. We haven’t produced an annual report in the past, so we would be very interested to hear from you in regard to suggestions for future Annual Reports. Overall, it has been a successful year. We are clearly addressing our mission of “...stimulating arts in northern Minnesota.” We are very proud of our exceptional performances on the Reif stage and the fine work being done through the Reif Dance Program. Our work with students (Children’s Performing Arts Series, dance scholarships and residencies by artists in area schools) is very important. We were disappointed that our expenses for the year were greater than our revenues by $26,546. This represents about 2.7 percent of our total budget, and we will have to make up that difference in future years. This deficit is not the result of a single shortfall, but rather a combination of factors, including unpredictable ticket sales for the past year along with some unanticipated expenses. The board has already adopted an operating budget to address these concerns going forward. Please take a look at the attached report. While much of this Annual Report is “by the numbers,” you will also see that lives are being changed. Kirk Adams Reif center board chair 2 mission Stimulating Arts in northern Minnesota. We do this by offering a diverse mix of performing and visual arts to be experienced, exhibited and taught. This mission is supported in the following values statements the Reif board of directors has adopted: We will pursue artistic excellence Quality arts experiences should be accessible to all The arts are integral to quality education We will maintain a well-managed arts organization and facility We gain strength through collaboration and partnerships The arts enrich our lives and are catalysts for a healthy community 2010-2011 Reif Board Kirk Adams, Chair Scott Larson, Vice Chair Ellen Bogardus-Szymaniak, Secretary Gene Baker, Treasurer Cliff Schroeder, ISD 318 Rep. Mary Ives Mary Jo Jess Louise Koglin-Fideldy Dan Margo Sue Mattson Barb McDonald Laurie Passard John Schroeder Cathy Shields Reif Staff David Marty, President Katie Benes, Marketing Jeremy Dewey, Development Patti Hadersbeck, Box Office Manager Pat Hoff, Bookkeeper John Miller, Technical Director Reif Dance Staff Daniel Blake, Ballet Director Katie Smith, Jazz & Tap Director Christina Andersen, Dance Instructor Julie Blake, Dance Instructor Raeanne Meininger, Dance Instructor 3 By the Numbers the Reif Center At the Reif Arts Council, we spent approximately $958,200 in fiscal year 2010-2011. Our research, using conservative estimates, indicates that this translated into an economic impact of $1,664,700 for our community. That means that without the Reif Center here, the community would be poorer by nearly $1.7 million this past fiscal year. Our Economic Prosperity Calculator indicates that there are the equivalent of over 45 full-time jobs in our community that are supported — directly or indirectly — by the expenditures of the Reif Center and the audiences we generate. This economic impact also translated into $57,789 in local government revenue and $69,185 in additional revenue to the State of Minnesota. This past fiscal year the Reif Arts Council sold a total of 24,823 PAID seats for performances, and we collected a total of $363,927 in ticket money. This means that the average seat for all performances cost just $14.66! Affordable ticket prices are one of the primary reasons patrons continue to visit the Reif Center and spend money in our community versus traveling to see shows at our metro counterparts. Our audiences are now traveling further than ever, too. We are proud that we are able to draw NEW people to experience our community. A review of our Reif database shows that 40 percent of our ticket buyers travel more than 25 miles one-way to attend performances. Those people come from Hibbing, Virginia, Aitkin, Bemidji, International Falls and beyond. While we appreciate this influx of persons from outside our community, we also work extensively with the people living right here, and a big portion of these people are local children. This past year we had 167 students attend regular dance classes taught all year long by five professional dance instructors. In addition, we had 6,887 students attend daytime performances by some of the most respected professional touring children’s theater companies in the world. Our students paid a minimal fee — usually $5 (sometimes free) — to see the same performances that children elsewhere spend $15 or more to attend. We also partnered with the Second Harvest North Central Food Bank to offer 10 free tickets to all performances in 2010-2011. Due to this partnership, hundreds of people were able to see productions this year they simply would not be able to afford otherwise. We also offered 27 Super 8 $8 seats to every Reif event last season, regardless of regular ticket cost, and we offered $5 Student Rush tickets for each show so our students could see world class performances at a price they can afford. All of these ideas, these action plans, are just part of a larger circle that brings us back to where we started — great performances. In 2010-2011we presented 41 world-class touring performances on the Reif stage. While that is an impressive number, the most impressive number is One. That’s you. You are a part of Stimulating Arts in Northern Minnesota. You pave the way for the community to excel, to grow, to prosper. That’s because our successes — both yours and ours — are tied together and we truly value that partnership. Blandin Foundation $157,800 Operating Support: $155,000 Kennedy Center Workshop: $2,800 By far our largest contributor, the Blandin Foundation is as critical to our existence today as they were in 1981, when they helped fund our building costs. One of our organizational goals is to reduce the amount of dependence we have on outside funding, and we have reduced our need for Blandin funding from 33 percent in years past to about 18% currently, but we still rely heavily on the generous support of the Blandin Foundation for day-to-day expenses. Minnesota State Arts Board $80,544 Operating Support: $54,144 Arts Tour Grant: $26,400 In November 2008, Minnesota voters passed the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment that guaranteed a portion of tax revenue for the arts. Because of this historic legislation, we now receive additional operating support from the MSAB and have more opportunities to apply for project grants that allow us to work with great artists from Minnesota and beyond. For the 2010-2011 season, that included Ragamala, Rhythmic Circus, An Enemy of the People, DSSO, The Mushroom Picker, and Let’s Get Away from it All. Arts Midwest $2,000 Houston Ballet II Support: $2,000 Each year, Arts Midwest helps support up to 20 percent of the artist fee for one premiere artist we present. In 2010-2011, that performance was Houston Ballet II. Arts Midwest’s continued support goes a long way to ensure that we can bring world class performances to our area at a greatly reduced fee. 11 dance $116,530 enrollment Ballet: 65 Tap: 47 Modern: 21Fundamentals: 34 Jazz: 60 Overall: 167 Dance Scholarships The Reif Center awarded $14,281 in need-based scholarships during the 2010-2011 year to 27 students. tuition 2010-2011 Tuition $113,638 2010 Summer Intensive Tuition $4,525 72 students attended our 2010 Summer Dance Intensive. Michael Anthony Iaizzo lost his battle with cancer at age 57, on October 25, 2010. Mike was first elected to the Reif Arts Council Board of Directors in 2005. He became the Board Secretary in 2006, and served as the Vice-Chair from 2007 until 2009, when he became the Chairman of the Board of the Reif Arts Council. Mike delighted in his service to the Reif Arts Council. While he pushed for bigger and more popular performances on the Reif stage, he was equally dedicated to fiscal accountability. He was proud to report that while he was Chair, the Reif Arts Council enjoyed net revenue of over $65,000, and able to pay off some accumulated obligations. Mike had a hand in inviting many bands to perform for audiences at the Reif Center, including Winter Dance Party, America, BJ Thomas, The Trashmen, Air Supply and The Pink Floyd Experience. Mike collected a series of “signed guitars” by many of these artists. Whenever a suggestion for a band would come up, Mike quickly grabbed his reference book to report on how many Top 10 hits the artist had (along with the year), which original artists were still performing with the band, and what the current “word on the street” was about musicianship. He was a great advisor. In addition to owning and operating KOZY/KMFY Radio, Mike was very active in the community. He was proud (and humbled, he said) to be the ONLY person ever named Volunteer of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce twice. He performed often with his band The Curbfeelers, regularly playing free performances for community events. He used his news and advertising resources at KOZY and KMFY to support many worthwhile community causes including, quite notably, the Reif Center. 19 Myles Reif performing arts center 720 NW Conifer Drive Grand Rapids MN 55744 218.327.5780 | www.reifcenter.org
