A Message From
MAYOR ALLEN GREEN
To our citizens and neighbors in Daytona Beach Shores, Wilbur-by-the-Sea and Ponce
Inlet, I wanted to apologize for the recent inconvenience created by the water line break
that required a boil water notice. Our crews reacted immediate to isolate the line and
get the system back up and running. Working in partnership with the Volusia County
Health Department, all the appropriate steps were taken to ensure the quality and
safety of the water.
I don’t recall a water break having an impact of this magnitude before and it’s a
concern. Already city staff has produced an after action report, and soon the City will
hire an independent engineering firm to evaluate why this event occurred.
To get the word out, we used every communication method to make people aware of the boil water notice.
Local television, radio and print media outlets were contacted. We used our Facebook, Twitter, and web
pages as well as Park and Recreation’s Park Alert, the Police Department’s Citizen Alert and Volusia County
Sheriff’s Reverse 911 system. Currently, we are trying to get a better understanding why the Reverse 911 messages sent out did not reach more of our residents.
Recently, we launched the “Citizen Connection” program to make it easy for you to inform the City about
issues and concerns. This is your opportunity to advise us and get automatic e-mail updates until your item is
completed. For Port Orange to be successful, it needs a commitment and input from citizens. Developed in
house, the program is found on our website and you can an either create an account or submit items anonymously. Typical entries include garbage pick-up complaints, problems with street signs, stormwater drainage issues and broken sidewalks. This system is NOT for reporting emergencies. If you have an emergency,
please call 911. To participate, please visit the City’s web site at www.port-orange.org and click on “Citizen
Connection.”
Finally, I encourage you to attend the many activities listed in the calendar section of this newsletter. The
Lakeside Jazz Festival and the Port Orange ArtFest are both outstanding cultural events held the same weekend at City Center. If you are interested in Port Orange and history, I would suggest attending the April 25
Founder’s Day Ceremony hosted by the Port Orange Historical Trust. Memorial Day is May 26. It’s a day to
remember the many men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Local veterans groups will host a ceremony that day at Veterans Park across the lake from City Hall.
Sincerely,
Allen Green
Mayor

Lakeside Jazz Fest
April 25 & 26
Now in its 17th year, the Lakeside Jazz Festival will hit the cool notes for two days
and nights beginning April 25 and ending on April 26, 2014. The live performances
will take place on the Kenneth W. Parker Amphitheater stage located at 2001 City
Center Circle.
As the one of the premier jazz festivals in the southeastern United States for middle
school and high school jazz bands, you will get a chance to listen to more than 60 different bands performances over the two days and nights. The music begins each day
around 9:00 a.m.
Headline jazz bands will perform at 5:00 p.m. each night, and include the Spruce
Creek Legacy Jazz Band, University of North Florida Jazz and the University of Central
Florida “Flying Horse” Jazz Band. Additional headlining bands are the Sante Fe College Big Band, Northwest Florida Jazz Band and the University of Florida Jazz Combo.
Topping off the weekend will be the United States Marine Jazz Band from Parris
Island, South Carolina performing at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night, April 26.
Band programs from Atlantic High School, Spruce Creek High School and Warner
Christian Academy host the festival. Funds generated from food concessions provide
summer music camp scholarships to students from the host schools.
Visit the festival’s web site at www.lakesidejazz.org for details on when the bands
will perform on stage.

No Dough
VW Bus Show
City Center will be the epicenter for VW Bus
enthusiasts from around Florida to gather. The
No Dough VW Bus Show is a free, fun-filled
car show scheduled on April 6, 2014. This
year will mark the 4th annual show in Port
Orange.
There is no limit to the variety of VW campers
you will see that day, and if you like VW Beetles,
there will be plenty. Besides the vehicles, food
vendors are scheduled along with a used parts
swap area! Call 386-506-5936 for information.
Hurricane Season Prep
The City of Port Orange encourages you and your family to be
prepared. The 2014 hurricane season begins June 1, which gives
you plenty of time to develop a plan and purchase your supplies.
What will you do if you have to evacuate? What if the commercial electrical grid is down for days or even weeks? Begin preparations today! Formulate a plan where you and your family will travel
if you are required to evacuate. Let your relatives and friends know
your plans so there is no confusion.
Here are a few items that you should confirm on your Hurricane
Prep List:
• H
ave an emergency supply kit ready that includes batteries,
food, clothing, tools, and medicines.
• Have two (2) points of contact, one locally and one out of
state, in case you or loved ones have to leave your home due
to an emergency.
• Programmable NOAA weather radios are good alert systems.
• During storms and potential storms, pay close attention to
local radio and TV stations, including the Weather Channel.
• Identify and protect personal papers in a watertight and, if
possible, fire proof container.
• Take preventative actions to protect your home, i.e., insurance, storm shutters, storm resistant windows, mobile home
tie downs, flood insurance, and trim tree branches.
• Know evacuation routes and secondary roads.
• Know how to shut off the water, electricity, and gas at your
home and business.
• When possible, you should make arrangements for your pets
at a boarding kennel, groomer, or at your veterinarian. Animals will not be allowed inside Red Cross shelters.
All Children’s Playground
Phase II Grand Re-Opening
The community is invited to celebrate with us as we officially open Phase II of the
All Children’s Playground. The date is April 10, 2014, and the ceremony will start at
5:30 p.m. Located at 5959 South Spruce Creek Road, the ceremony will re-open the
playground area that has been under construction since October.
Originally dedicated in 1989, All Children’s wooden playground served the community well but the years of use and the elements had damaged the equipment.
Renovations to the entire playground have been a few years in the making. Phase
I was completed in 2009 with the assistance of a Volusia ECHO grant and a Florida
Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) grant. Phase II renovations
were also funded by a Volusia ECHO grant. Both playground areas reflect a nautical
theme that derived from community suggestions and draws on Port Orange’s history as a river town.
The new equipment consists of two pirate ships fitted with sails, portholes and cannons along with slides, net
climbers and interactive sensory stations. As the park’s name indicates, there are accessible swings sets and inclusive equipment for all children and all abilities. In addition, a splash pad was installed as well as synthetic turf that
will provide a protective surface.

Road Paving Program
Each year the Public Works Department goes through a detailed review process to determine which of the many
city streets and roadways are in need of milling, resurfacing, and/or repairs. From that review, the Paving Program is
developed and the list is prioritized. Identified along with the street is the type of repairs, the base conditions and
the estimated cost. At their March 4, 2014 meeting, the Port Orange City Council
approved this year’s Paving Program.
Some of the streets scheduled for work are Isabelle Avenue from US 1 to Nova
Road, Oak Street from Dunlawton to US 1 and Willow Run Boulevard from Clyde
ROAD
Morris Boulevard to near Tracy Drive. One major repair project found within the
WORK
2014 Paving Program is Yorktowne Boulevard north of Dunlawton. This road has
AHEAD
settled in several locations and has been subjected to significant drainage issues
over the years. An engineering analysis was completed in 2012 and will serve as the
basis for its repairs.
To see which roadway is scheduled, visit the city’s web site at www.port-orange.
org. Click on “Agendas & Minutes” on the right side of the home page. Then select
“Regular City Council Meetings” and then click on the March 4, 2014 Agenda link.
