PURPOSE OF JAZZ MINOR The purpose of the Jazz Minor is to give students access to commercial music skills that are vital to participating in today’s robust music industry. The courses in the Jazz Minor provide critical musical training in the styles of swing, latin, rock, funk, pop, bebop, etc. Courses target a theoretical understanding of jazz harmony, chord symbols, jazz scales and modes, jazz articulations, blues forms, piano voicings, the basics of tune writing, commercial arranging, and techniques in accurately memorizing jazz standards. The training offered by the Jazz Minor courses are designed to augment a student’s performance income after exiting college and provide them with the necessary foundation for international freelance opportunities. RATIONAL: REMAINING COMPETATIVE WITH OUR STATE MUSIC PROGRAMS In comparing the other 4 year college music programs in the state, they have jazz programs and are branching out to provide music students with more courses that target current industry skill sets. By offering a Jazz Minor at UF we will attract quality music students that can now consider the University of Florida as a means to pursue commercial music skills while attending college. CURRENT MINORS AT UF There are no other Minors at the University of Florida that offer the commercial skills training available in the Jazz Minor. I believe this makes the jazz minor and ideal fit for the department and could help complete our canvas of offerings. Likewise, since no core classes are shared with any Music Degrees we currently offer, students may therefore pursue the Jazz Minor in combination with any Music Degree. The Jazz Minor Positively Impacts the School of Music 1. Two of the proposed Jazz Minor courses are fully online. In addition all other jazz classes are now hybrids and have online resources available to the student. This minor supports our initiatives to develop online courses for the University and School of Music 2. With the diversity of music course offerings available at schools such as Florida State, University of Miami, University of Central Florida, etc., the Jazz Minor at UF makes us more competitive and we will attract students that can now consider the University of Florida as a means to pursue commercial music skills while attending college. 3. The Jazz Minor supports the Center for Latin America Studies by requiring our students to participate in the World Music Ensemble instead of requiring Improvisation 2. This diversifies our program and gives us a bigger net to attract students interested in our programs and ensemble offerings. 4. Some of the jazz students may be excellent classical players and audition into our currently offered private lesson studios. This would make them versatile to perform in a wide variety of ensembles for the department. 5. Several classes in the Jazz Minor will need a Keyboard Lab Fee and this actively supports our technology enhancement initiatives. JAZZ MINOR REQUIREMENTS 1. In order to pursue the Jazz Minor students must pass the Jazz Theory Proficiency. If the student scores a B or below they will be allowed the option to study suggested materials and re-take the Jazz Theory Proficiency in the following semester. Students will be allowed only one attempt a semester to take and pass the Jazz Theory Proficiency. This test can be administered in the summer by appointment or during the first week of registration. 2. A passing grade of B is required for all courses listed in the Jazz Minor if these courses are to count towards the UF Jazz Minor. If a student does not achieve B or better after two attempts they will no longer be eligible for the minor. 3. Student’s who previously have taken Jazz Improvisation and would like to get the course credit towards the minor, will have to take the Jazz Improvisation proficiency exam and pass with a B or higher. If they do not pass the proficiency exam they will have to take the Jazz Improvisation course again at UF under the new curriculum and attain a B or higher grade. 4. Students may take the Jazz Theory proficiency exam in the summer and if passed can start the Jazz Minor in the Fall beginning with Jazz Fundamentals 1. 5. For students enrolling in the Fall semester who have to take Music Theory 1, these students will take Jazz Fundamentals 1 in the Spring if you pass Music Theory 1 with a B or higher grade. These students catch up by taking Jazz Fundamentals 2 in Summer C. 6. Any students at UF may take Jazz Band at any time if they audition into an ensemble. 7. Students may audition directly into Jazz Combo or Jazz Improvisation when starting the Jazz Minor. They must, however, have completed Jazz Fundamentals 2 for the courses to count towards your Jazz Minor. In other words, once a student has completed Jazz Fundamentals 2, the next combo or improvisation class that the student enrolls in will count towards the Jazz Minor. 8. To enroll into the Jazz Arranging 1 class you must have completed Jazz Fundamentals 1 and 2 and Jazz Improvisation with a B or better grade. 9. Advanced Jazz Musicianship 1 & 2 will lead to an exit exam that includes the performance of 8 jazz standards memory.
