These goals are simply out of reach
to many people in our communit y. They
face a host of obstacles to entering
college including low levels of education,
few f inancial resources and a lack of
familiarit y with the college admissions
process.
With the right skills, knowledge and
guidance, our Career Pathways (CP)
program aims to help these individuals
enter college and ultimately f ind
“middle-wage, middle-skill ” jobs that
will help them become economically
self-suff icient.
The cornerstone of the program is our
Communit y College 101 class, where
students create a career plan, complete
f inancial-aid forms, apply to college and
enroll in classes. They also learn study
techniques to help them succeed once on
campus.
“I tr y to break down a lot of
misconceptions that students have about
the process. We tr y to show them they
do have options, and that there’s more
support than they thought. Money is
always the biggest concern, but I tell
my students, ‘Don’t worr y. We don’t
want money to be the barrier that causes
you not to go to college,’” said Monica
Cheng, who heads our CP program.

every person who walks
into our Job Training and
Education Centers has potential.
Often, the most diff icult part
of helping our clients is getting
them to believe this, too.
W hen you haven’t held a job for several
years, can’t speak English, or have just
been released from prison, it’s easy to
feel that the road ahead will be paved
with diff icult y. Despite their challenges,
our message to people is always, “ You
can succeed, and we will help you.”
We ultimately want our students to
gain the abilit y to support themselves
and their families. But getting livingwage jobs often requires college classes,
or even a degree. That’s why we created
Career Pathways.
recently honored the program with a

this extra support to help them manage
life’s many challenges.

New Monroe store opening in April
Goodwill is growing yet again! We are
opening a new store on April 15 in Monroe.
Housed in a brand-new 22,000 square foot
building, the store will make shopping at
Goodwill more convenient for residents of
eastern Snohomish County and northeast
King County. A donation center currently
located in Monroe will move on-site as
early as March.
Discover Goodwill’s mission
In early February, Goodwill held a
grand opening celebration for a new
Outlet store in Everett. Like the Seattle
Outlet, this store sells many items by the
pound or at discounted prices. The facility,
which includes a large warehouse to serve
stores north of Seattle, contains machines
that enable bundling of unsold items for
more efficient packing and shipping. One
machine can bale anything from Styrofoam
to metal and electronics.
“Investing in the technology to more
efficiently sort donated items allows us to
be better stewards of items donated to us by
getting the best price, which provides more
resources for our job training programs.
We’re also able to be better stewards of the
environment by expanding our recycling
operations,” said Cindi Forslund, Vice
President of Retail Operations.
Computer labs open doors to area
residents looking for jobs

to a computer to write a resume or look
online for a job? Help us get the word out
that Goodwill’s computers are available for
career-related activities during designated
times each week. Visit www.seattlegoodwill.

Goodwill staff will hit the road in the
coming months to hold Open Houses at Job
Training and Education Centers in Burien,
Bellevue and Bellingham. It’s a perfect
opportunity for you, a friend or family
member to learn more about Goodwill’s

Job training centers welcome new
classroom technology
In the past few months, Goodwill
classrooms have welcomed new technology
that is helping our students become
job-ready. With a generous grant from
Microsoft, all nine Job Training and
Education Centers now have iClickers,
an audience response system that allows
Instructors to test student comprehension
quickly. Instructors are also using document
cameras, which can project any material on
a screen for students to view.
“We tested these two tools at our
Bellevue center and found them to be very
effective in helping student learning. We’re
always looking for technology that helps
students learn new material,” said Karen
Kruger, Program Development Manager.
Additionally, several centers are testing
technology like digital notepads and textto-speech software that could be rolled out
to all centers soon.
