Science: Biology with Lab
Text: Exploring Creation with Biology, by Dr. Jay Wile
Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, this course provides the student with a strong background in the
scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular
and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. Course content includes: the study of Life, using a
biological key, Kingdom Monera, Kingdom Protista, Kingdom Fungi, chemistry of life, cell structure, cellular
reproduction, genetics, evolution, ecosystems, invertebrates of Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Phylum
Chordata, Kingdom Plantae anatomy and classification, Kingdom Plantae physiology and reproduction, reptiles,
birds, and mammals. A microscopy lab will include 12 labs using self-prepared and prepared slides. These labs
will include and introduction to microscopy and use of the microscope, observations of the Kingdom Monera,
Kingdom Protista, Subkingdom Protozoa; Class Basidiomycetes, Yeasts, Molds, Imperfect Fungi, detailed cell
structure, and mitosis. Dissection Labs include dissection and inspection of the following: worm, crayfish, perch,
and frog. Labs and tests available on request.
