the number of microorganisms. Surgical asepsis
requires that all organisms be eliminated.
33.5 Sanitization is the scrubbing of instruments and
equipment with special brushes and detergent to

media where pathogens can grow. Disinfection uses
special cleaning products applied particularly to
instruments and equipment to reduce or eliminate
infectious organisms. Sterilization is usually
