Topics include derivatives of algebraic and transcendental functions, indefinite integral, definite integral and its interpretation as an area. Prerequisites: Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) or MATH 1520 or equivalent. Students who do not have the prerequisites must see the instructor within the first two weeks of term. Evaluation: Weekly assignments*=10%, Three term tests=45%, Final Exam=45% *Weekly assignments are done online using WebAssign. You must have access to WebAssign to complete them. Assignments are available on Wednesday after class until Sunday at 9pm EST each week (deadline is electronically enforced). Only the top 9 assignment marks will be included in your course grade. Is MATH 1013 the right course for you? See alternatives MATH 1505 and MATH 1310. Make sure that 1013 or these other courses satisfy your degree requirements. 2. Make sure that you allot extra time each week towards this course. Take at least 2 hours per every hour of lecture. Read the text book! Try reading other books if you find that the textbook is too hard (or too easy). 3. Make sure that you do the weekly assignments – this is really the main part of the course. If you don't practice by solving exercises – you will very likely fail this course. If you don't know how to solve a particular problem, follow these steps: (1) Read the textbook again. (2) Discuss the problem with fellow students. (3) Seek help at MathLab, (4) Come to instructor's office hours. 4. Academic integrity. Working with study groups for this course will help you succeed. HOWEVER, pay careful attention of the rules surrounding Academic Integrity - see York’s website for this policy. Make sure that you do your online assignment questions on your own. 5. Special needs students please identify yourselves to the course instructor as soon as possible. 6. Tests (closed-book, closed-notes) will be done during class hours . If you miss a test you must provide a doctor’s note or other conrete evidence why you were unable to attend within 4 WORKING DAYS of the test date. In this case the credit for that test will be transferred to the final exam, otherwise, a zero grade will be assigned for the test in question. 9. After the drop date, a poor performance will be recorded on your transcript. 12. There are no classes on October 12 (Thanksgiving) and October 30 (Fall reading days) 13. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with York’s policies regarding (i) Academic Honesty Policy and Procedures/Academic Integrity www.yorku.ca/acadinte/students/policy.htm, (ii) Course requirement accommodation for students with disabilities, including physical, medical, systemic, learning and psychiatric disabilities, (iii) Student Conduct Standards and (iv) Religious Observance Accommodation 14. When e-mailing, please write "MATH1013" and your name in the subject. 15. In case of difficulties/problems contact the instructor as soon as possible. 16.
