Committed to People, Committed to the Future. These words express Toshiba Group’s mission and convey the values we share, they emphasize our respect for people, value creation and contributions to society. Since Toshiba’s establishment in 1875, these values have inspired us to fulfill our corporate social responsibilities in all we do, to help to create a higher quality of life for all people, and to ensure the progress continues within the world community. We face many challenges today, but our commitment remains unchanged, and we continue to take determined steps into the future. Basic Commitment of the Toshiba Group 1. Commitment to People We endeavor to serve the needs of all people, especially our customers, shareholders, and employees, by implementing forward-looking corporate strategies while carrying out responsible and responsive business activities. As good corporate citizens, we actively contribute to further the goals of society. 2. Commitment to the Future By continually developing innovative technologies centering on the fields of Electronics and Energy, we strive to create products and services that enhance human life, and which lead to a thriving, healthy society. Toshiba Corporation expresses sincere apologies to our shareholders, customers, business partners and all other stakeholders for any concern or inconvenience caused by issues relating to the appropriateness of its accounting. Following the September 30 Extraordinary General Meeting of the shareholders, Toshiba now has a new management team in place. Our immediate aims are to regain trust and revitalize the company. We are responding resolutely to the discovery of inappropriate accounting by enhancing internal controls. In October, we initiated wide ranging reforms of our corporate governance, including establishing an Internal Audit Division, and an Audit Committee composed entirely of outside directors. At the board level, we have reinforced oversight of top management and operations by appointing a majority of outside directors. Going forward, we will continue to implement necessary measures, while working to fulfill our social responsibilities through business activities that place the highest priority on human life, safety and compliance. In an environment where the only certainty is change at an ever faster pace, we must overcome many complex problems, including population growth, resource depletion and the ever-growing need for energy. As we restructure Toshiba Group as a forward-looking, globally competitive organization, we will seek to contribute to society and overcome these issues. We will focus on three main business domains, Energy, Storage and Healthcare, and channel our energy into creating value that our customers need today. We will also grow the seeds that will become next generation solutions, taking advantages of our strengths in hydrogen-based energy systems, in power electronics that can make great contributions to energy saving and other areas. Through its new organization, Toshiba Group as a whole will make an united effort to regain the trust of its stakeholders, including customers and shareholders and the public. As we do so, I ask for your understanding and ongoing support. Planting Activity in Republic of Serbia 13 Management Continuing to Support Reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake We continue to support the reconstruction of the Tohoku region from the perspectives of human development, manufacturing (industrial development), and community development, toward helping the region and the people hit by the disaster to recover as soon as possible. Toshiba has been providing university scholarships to selected students in the Tohoku region since fiscal 2011. With employee-organized fundraising and labor union activities taking the lead, we continue to dispatch volunteers to the quake-hit region. In addition, specialty goods from the affected areas are on sale at shops in Toshiba HQ and our factories, and local foods are used in canteen meals. Since FY2012, as part of their initial training, new employees of Toshiba and other Group companies assist reconstruction. Environmental Management New employees lend a helping hand Environmental Vision 2050 In “Environmental Vision 2050,” Toshiba Group envisages a mid-century world where people lead affluent lifestyles in harmony with the Earth. Throughout product life cycles, from manufacture to use, to reuse and recycling, Toshiba Group emphasizes safety, security and value creation. The Group also strives for harmony with the Earth by working to mitigate climate change, use resources efficiently and manage chemicals properly, in order to reduce environmental impacts. In order to realize Environmental Vision 2050, Toshiba Group has set a long-term goal to increase eco-efficiency by 10 times compared to the FY2000 level by FY2050. Eco-efficiency can be expressed as a fraction, with value as the numerator and environmental impacts as the denominator. It can be improved largely by increasing added value and decreasing environmental impacts simultaneously. To further accelerate its initiatives for environmental management based on the four “Green” concepts—“Greening of Process,” “Greening of Products,” “Greening by Technology,” and “Green Management”—as we aim to become one of the world’s foremost eco-companies. 14 R & D Research and Development Toshiba Group is committed to doing its part to help address global issues with a focus on the three business areas: energy, storage and healthcare. To realize the company’ s vision of creating a safe, secure and comfortable society, we are striving to deliver not only creative and innovative products but excellent user experiences as well, because we understand that customers find greater value in the new or enhanced experiences offered by products than in the products themselves. We will continue to deliver unique value to our customers through creating innovative technologies and bringing together the essence of our technological assets. ●Major R&D bases in Japan and overseas R&D Structure Corporate-level research centers—the Corporate Research & Development Center and the Corporate Manufacturing Engineering Center—pursue group-wide R&D in basic technologies, while development centers support each business group. We continue to draw inspiration from their examples. Hisashige Tanaka (1799-1881) Ichisuke Fujioka (1857-1918) Known as the “genius of mechanical wonders,” Hisashige Tanaka was one of Japan’s greatest inventors during the late Edo (1603-1868) and early Meiji (1868-1912) periods. His long list of inventions includes the “Man-nen dokei” chronometer. In addition to his brilliant craftsmanship, he was well versed in Western technologies, including telegraphy and steam engines. In 1875, at the age of 76, he opened a shop-cum-factory in Ginza, Tokyo, that manufactured various devices, most notably telegraph equipment. This is recognized as the origin of Toshiba. The “father of electricity in Japan,” Ichisuke Fujioka’ s pioneered Japanese research into electric lighting. He met Thomas Edison when visiting the United States on a Japanese government mission and on his return devoted himself to the development of Japan’ s first incandescent lamps. Fujioka founded a company, Hakunetsu-sha, in 1890, to manufacture light bulbs.
