Term 4 | Week 5 | Thursday 5 November 2015 , From the Principal Highlights From the Principal High Achiever Junior School News ELC News Presentation Evening ELC 3 Year Old Places Regular rehearsals for Presentation Evening are taking place and every student will be on stage at some time throughout the night. Several parents and teachers have told me that Presentation Evening is their favourite school event in the year; I’m certainly looking forward to it. If you haven’t reserved your seat please do so via the link that was recently emailed to all parents. This week I read an interesting article about girls and perfectionism. The article was based on research from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) which shows that girls, and in particular gifted girls, suffer the highest levels of stress, anxiety and pressure in their quest for academic success. Book Lists 2016 Uniform Shop Stationery List 2016 Chartered Bus and Tennis Forms Second Hand Uniform andbooks Annual Giving 2015 SPA Entertainment Books for Sale Letter to Parents Community News The article made the difference between stress and anxiety clear. “Stress is a response to routine pressures like exams, moving house or family difficulties. It occurs in reaction to a specific stressor and usually goes away once the stressful situation has resolved itself. Anxiety, on the other hand, results in a young person worrying that events in the future will have negative outcomes. Perfectionism, particularly in girls, is receiving increasing attention as a factor in stress and anxiety. Dr Tom Nehmy, a psychologist from Flinders University believes that perfectionism is the common risk factor that best explains the problems associated with depression, anxiety and eating disorders. It basically involves things like black and white thinking, being extremely self-critical and having and inability to cope with pressure because of a fear of failure. Nehmy believes that young people need to learn balanced, realistic thinking and how to regulate thoughts and behaviours associated with perfectionism. The UNSW researchers say that regular sleep, exercise and relaxation time are all more important than an extra hour of study. This research will come as no surprise to most teachers and parents. Achieving a good balance in all things makes sense. Shelford staff work hard to provide students with helpful strategies to reduce stress and to enhance relaxation. As we have said many times, we view parents as partners in the education of their children.
