Department Organization Committee Recommendation to College President – Physical Sciences
On Wednesday, May 8, 2013, the DOC met to review your progress on the DOC’s recommendations issued on
May 31, 2012. In addition to reviewing your current proposal to establish a Department of Physical Science,
the DOC members reviewed feedback received via email.
Recommendation to College President
The DOC recommends that the college president establish a Physical Science Incubator Unit comprised of the
disciplines listed below, for one year. The proposed one-year “incubator” period aligns with the next cycle of
Science department chair election. If the DOC’s recommendation is accepted by the College President, the
disciplines listed below would not be part of the Science department for the 2013-14 year:
*Disciplines Recommended to Transition to Physical Science Incubator Unit for 2013-14
Astronomy, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology and Physics
Further, the DOC proposes to meet in May of 2014 to review your progress on the following measures:
•
•
•
•
developing new and updating curriculum including transferability, articulation, and TMC alignment, as
applicable
increased formalized partnerships with four-year colleges and universities
engagement with industry, physical science associations and other organizations leading towards
increased internships/externships and student and faculty research opportunities; and
increased faculty engagement in college activities and committees
The DOC further recommends that the college president (or designee) convene a meeting with you, your
assigned supervising administrator and the DOC members prior to the end of the Spring 2013 semester to
ensure that you understand the spirit, intent, logistics and outcomes expected from the Physical Science
Incubator Unit for 2013-14.
The Department Organization Committee (DOC) commends your passion and dedication to your programs,
your students and Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
