Scope: An herbal extract should be made by using “Herbal Standards for Extractions”. This age old process is time consuming and expensive. The higher the % of standardization, the more costly the product. (Ex. Typically herbs standardized to1% are less expensive than herbs standardized to 20%, in the same species).
The Problem : With the dramatic growth in the botanical industry over the past 10 years, suppliers and manufactures have fought to gain the competitive advantage. Their solution was to illegally spike or adulterate herbs with synthetic drugs that matched the active constituent of the standardized herb.
Examples:
Herb & Active Drug Used
Pseudoephrine
Kola Nut standardized to caffeine Caffeine Anhydrous
Others:
Sida Cordifolia standardized to ephedrine Ephedrine HCL
Added Constituent
Garcinia Cambogia Extract standardized
to hydroxy citric acid
White Willow Bark Extract standardized
to salisns
Citric Acid
Salic Acid
These are just a few. These companies offering these spiked materials know that conventional testing methods such as HPLC & UV Vis can be fooled. You can only quantify the active material, with no clue of its origin (Natural or Spiked).
The Danger: Synthetic drugs act differently in the body than do the naturally occurring constituents. These active drugs that are being added to herbs are addictive, dangerous & may cause death. Consumers are trusting that when they buy a herbal product from a health store that they are getting a safe effective tool for improving the quality of their life. These herbal products are supposed to be an alternative to drugs. BUT ARE THEY?
Dr. Jeff Golini, the Executive Scientist at BioCeuticals Research & Development
Analytical Laboratory (division of All American Pharmaceutical) discovered in 1993, that many herbs were being spiked. After this amazing discovery, Dr. Golini went to work on developing a sophisticated testing method to be able to achieve 100% validation in detecting those herbal products which are adulterated with undisclosed and unwanted synthetics. Dr. Golini utilizes
High Performance Liquid Chromatography, UV Visibility, and high-powered Electric
Microscopes, to start off the examination. To determine, quantify, qualify, and detect those nasty unwanted synthetics, Dr. Golini relies on Bran+Luebbe’s Patented Fourier Transform High
Performance Crystal Spectroscopy equipment; utilizing the advanced science of Near InfraRed
(NIR).
Dr. Jeff Golini has pioneered and been labeled the founding father of NIR in the
Nutraceutical Industry. Using a Bran + Luebbe FTNIR InfraProver II for his analytical research, cluster models where developed to test for these unwanted impurities and spiked drugs.
Utilizing the BOM Cluster Analysis, each and every molecule is checked to determine if the herb is completely of botanical origin.
Many scientist throughout the world have called this BOM Cluster Analysis the greatest analytical break through since the development of the science of Near InfraRed itself. The scientist and his analysis are only as good as the technology behind them. Dr. Golini’s BOM
Cluster Analysis matched with a Bran+Luebbe InfraProver II, is what makes the whole thing work. Bran+Luebbe uses crystal technology, the patented InfraProver optics utilizes the birefringent properties of crystal wedges combined with polarization techniques to create a unique Fourier Transform Near Infrared (FT-NIR) analyzer. This unique optics design replaces grating technology. With crystal FT-NIR, both components of light travel through exactly the same optical path length, eliminating the error due to recombining beams observed with traditional FT systems.
Dr. Golini states, “Getting back to what God intended us to do with his natural herbal creations, provide safe and natural alternatives to dangerous drugs, is our goal. With our discovery and research, consumers can now feel safe about the herbs they consume.”

2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Admministration has finally caught on to the age old trick of spiking herbs with dangerous drugs. The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to take Liqiang 4 Dietary Supplement Capsules because they contain glyburide – a drug that could have serious, life-threatening consequences in some people. Glyburide is a drug used to lower blood sugar, and is safe and effective when used as labeled in FDA-approved medications. The product is manufactured by Liqiang
Research Institute, China, and marketed throughout the United States in herbal stores and through mail order by Bugle International of Northridge CA.
The FDA learned of the potential problem through an anonymous consumer complaint and followed up with testing that revealed the presence of glyburide in this product. We wonder where the tip came from?
With the FDA’s recent banning of the raw material “Andro”, Dr. Golini has discovered a dramatic rise in herbal products that are suppose to increase libido and testosterone spiked with steroids & or Andros. The following are a few of these herbs:
Herb Drug Added
Sildenafil (viagra)
Dr. Golini’s patented Buchii technology, utilizing FTNIR and his famous BOM Cluster
Analysis has teamed up with HFL laboratories in the United Kingdoms. HFL is the UK's preeminent sports drug surveillance and pharmaceutical contract research organization. The outcome is detection of steroids down to 50 ppm.

Dietary Supplement Company in Georgia Accused of Mob Tactics and Spiking
Supplements
REDMOND, Wash. - Msnbc.com’s exclusive report on a once thriving company with a popular line of natural dietary supplements revealed an unusual criminal case unfolding in federal court in Atlanta. Prosecutors allege that Hi-Tech Nutrition of Norcross, Ga., was a criminal enterprise that sold dangerous "spiked" products and was run by executives who considered assassination and blackmail to stop a federal investigation.
In an original story exclusive to msnbc.com, Mike Brunker, projects team editor, reported that the allegations are the most far-ranging ever leveled against a company in dietary supplement industry. The allegations, found in the court filings, state that some or all of the defendants:
* Discussed killing a U.S. Food and Drug Administration agent and blackmailing an assistant
U.S. attorney. Neither plot was carried out, but a company co-founder was subsequently jailed after being convicted of being a felon in possession of a "firearm silencer."
* Used the herbal stimulant ephedra in company diet products after the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration banned its use on April 12, 2004, finding it presented "an unreasonable risk of injury or illness.
* Sold "herbal" supplements that actually contained the active ingredients of prescription drugs that could interact dangerously with other medications.
* Illegally imported and sold banned steroids.
* Manufactured phony ecstasy tablets that were sold on U.S. streets.
* Created a muscle-building drink that was later marketed as a cleaning solution in an effort to mislead investigators.
The allegations spring from the September 7, 2006, indictment of the company and 11 executives, employees and associates for allegedly operating an illegal Internet pharmacy in
Belize.
