College Chemistry I

Fall 08

MWF 10, 11 and 12 sections

This purpose of this course is to arm students with a thorough understanding of the basic theories and concepts of chemistry, and to enable them to continue their pursuit of these subjects at a higher level.

This course begins at a fundamental level of chemistry, but students will be expected to work outside of class to master basic skills. The course is fast-paced, and successful students will apply themselves to daily studying.

Instructor: Dr. Angela King Office: 206 Salem Hall, 758-5511 E-mail: kingag@wfu.edu

Office Hours: Please see me if you are having trouble with the class. Open door policy-anytime I am in the office without prior commitment. Although Thursday is not a good day to meet with me, I am usually in my office up until 3PM on other days. Please check with me in advance to make sure I don’t have a conflict. Email is a great way to contact me.

Text: “Chemistry”, by McMurry & Fay, 5 th

ed. The textbook comes with a software package called

Mastering General Chemistry. You should save it for use in future courses. You will want to purchase a solutions manual for my section.

Class attendance: Your attendance at all lectures is expected. You are responsible for all material covered in lectures, assigned readings, and homework sets. If you miss lecture it is your responsibility to obtain all information given out in class. Please see me for individual conflicts. Cell phones are not welcome in our classroom and only bring your Thinkpad if instructed to do so .

Students are encouraged to save all returned graded material as both a source of grade verification and a study resource for the final exam.

Home Page : http://www.wfu.edu/~kingag/111. It will be used to give reminders, tips, and answer common questions. The page also contains old exams, a list of text homework, on-line quizzes that are instantly graded, and links to interactive learning tutorials that I have helped to create. You are responsible for using this resource as instructed in lecture. This class will use this webpage in place of

Blackboard.

Academic Integrity: All students are responsible for knowing and observing the Wake Forest

University honor system.

Exams: Make-up exams will not be given. If you have a conflict, you must see me in advance. For excused absences, the average of score of the remaining midterm exams will be used for the missed

exam score. Requests for a re-grade must have a short explanation attached to the front and be turned in within one week of receiving the grade. Students with disabilities who require special arrangements to be made in order to satisfy the course requirements must contact Dr King during the first week of class. Students should present the appropriate verification from Disability Services of the Learning

Assistance Center.

Homework: Each lecture, relevant problems from the textbook will be listed. Solutions will not be collected, but you are encouraged to do the exercises to aid comprehension. The answers to these are available in the back of the text book and you may consult the Student Solutions Manual for details.

There will be three sets of longer, more challenging graded exercises throughout the semester. You must clearly show all work in a logical manner to receive credit. These graded problem sets are written by me and an excellent way to prepare for the exams. LATE HOMEWORK SETS ARE NOT

ACCEPTED UNDER ANY CONDITIONS. COME TO CLASS AND KEEP UP!

On-line pre-quizzes: It is essential that our class time be used in the most efficient manner. This means that students should prepare for each class and master the basic material independently, allowing more time to discuss difficulties with the instructor. To ensure that all students adequately prepare for class, there will be electronic quizzes accessible from the web page, which must be completed before class on assigned days. Please listen in class for announcements. Failure to complete the quizzes by the deadline for any reason will result in a grade of zero.
