E-Mail Newsletter Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane, Inc. www.lecomite.org Volume I, No. 1 January 2009 Copyright © 2009 by Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane, Inc. Editor: Judy Riffel (riffelj@bellsouth.net) Our Inaugural Issue! Name Our Newsletter Contest Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane, Inc., is proud to release the first issue of its as-yet unnamed new sletter (see our naming contest next column). With rising postage costs and an increasing number of members w ho have access to e-mail, an electronic new sletter w as deemed to be a cost effective and timely w ay to communicate w ith the majority of the members. As you may have noticed, the first issue of our new sletter is not yet named. But w e hope to have a permanent name by the April issue. At it s October 2008 meeting, Le Comité’ s Board of Directors approved a contest t o name the new sletter, w ith the w inner receiving his or her choice of any one of the society’ s in-stock publicat ions as a prize. This new sletter w ill not replace our print journal, le Raconteur. Rather, it w ill be a supplement, reporting on society new s and activities. It w ill also provide an opportunity to try out new ideas, such as the calendar of meetings (see p. 5). Some items w ill be repeated in le Raconteur so that all members w ill be informed. But many w ill appear only in this new sletter. The Board is looking for titles that convey the electronic nature of the new sletter as w ell as some connection to Louisiana, genealogy, and/or archival preservation. Several entries have already been submit ted, but more are encouraged. To ent er, e-mail your titles to riffelj@bellsouth.net or mail them along w ith your name and address to Le Comité at P.O. Box 1547, Baton Rouge, LA 70821. All ent ries must be received by February 1, 2009. As w ith any new venture, adjustments w ill be made along the w ay. Features may be added or removed. Therefore, w e w elcome your feedback and suggestions. There is no limit on the number of entries that can be submitt ed, how ever, only entries from 2009 paid members w ill be considered. If no suitable name is received, the contest w ill be extended until one is found. This first issue is being sent to 379 members w ho supplied e-mail addresses. This includes 162 members w ho have paid for 2009 and 217 from 2008 w ho have not yet paid. Please note the subject line of the e-mail accompanying this new sletter. It w ill indicate your 2009 membership status w ith “ PAID” or “ NOT PAID.” 1 E-M ail New slet t er (Le Com it é des A rc hiv es de la Louisiane, Inc.) V olum e I, No. 1 Most used books and periodicals have also been sold. How ever, anyone w ishing a list of remainders can send an e-mail to Judy Riffel (riffelj@bellsouth.net). Our New Website As reported in the December issue of le Raconteur, Le Comité recently launched its new w ebsite (w w w .lecomite.org). The new site contains all the information found on the Secretary of State’ s w ebsite, plus a few additions, corrections, and updates. Free People of Color Book Is Out The society’ s new est release is entitled New Orleans Register of Free People of Color, 1840-1864. This is a revised edition of the abstracts that appeared in installments in le Raconteur from 1992 to 2006. Three book indexes w ere added to the publications page. These w ere Abstract s of St. John the Bapt ist Parish Civil Records, 1757-1798; Calendar of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, Civil Records, Volume 1, 18031819; and St. Joseph Catholic Cemet ery, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Tables of contents for le Raconteur through t he December 2008 issue and the annual index for 2008 w ere recently added. A few more indexes w ere “ cleaned up” and some information w as updated, such as the microfilm donations list. A new feature is the announcements box on the main page w hich w ill be updated regularly. This volume contains all the names found in the Register of Free People of Color kept by the Mayor’ s office. While the dates indicate the registrations occurred betw een 1840 and 1864, some entries may actually date back to the 1830s. Most entries provide the registrant’ s name, sex, color, age, ident ifying marks, profession, place of birth, time of arrival, date of registration, and legal ref erence to freedom such as notarial acts and dates or information on parents being free. Please send ideas and suggestions for other features to add to Judy Riffel (riffelj@bellsouth.net). The 234-page sof t cover book sells for $30.00 to members and $40.00 to nonmembers, postpaid. To order, mail check or money order to: Le Comité, P.O. Box 1547, Baton Rouge, LA 70821. To check the name index, visit our w ebsite at w w w .lecomite.org. Publications Report Publications Committee Chairman Ann DeVillier Riffel report s t hat the society’ s 2008 book, A Guide to Genealogical Research at the Louisiana State Archives, has recently sold out. A revised second edition is in the w orks and is scheduled for release in the Spring of 2009. Membership Report Third Vice President and Membership Committee Chairman Cherryl Forbes Montgomery reports that the year-end membership total for 2008 w as 567. The tw o ballots are due March 1 st . To avoid the $5 late fee, dues should also be sent in by March 1 st . Admission is free to members. Regist ration begins at 1 p.m. and the business meeting begins at 1:45. A Sneak Peak at le Raconteur In Memoriam Several new articles are planned for the upcoming issues of le Raconteur. The March issue w ill feature articles on the Louisiana Land Grants Collection at the Library of Congress, published accounts of slaves in Baton Rouge from 1819-1822, a 1798 census of New Feliciana, medical reports on the 13 t h Louisiana Infantry, and a list of deaths recorded in the City of Jefferson for 1868-1870. Le Comité lost three long-time members in 2008. Charles A. Ricard, a native and resident of Baton Rouge, died August 7 t h. He w as 77. Walter W. Allen, a native of Bayou Chene and resident of Bayou Sorrell, died August 27 t h . He w as 71. And, Mary Lou (Simpson) Loudon, a native of Brookhaven, Miss., died December 31 st in Baton Rouge at the age of 92. Dr. Loudon w as a former president of the Baton Rouge Genealogical & Historical Society and a volunteer at the Centroplex and Bluebonnet libraries. Although she had not been active in genealogy for some time due to illness, she w as instrument al in promoting genealogy in the Baton Rouge area for many years. Her encouragement tow ards one young genealogist w ill not be forgotten. The society ext ends its condolences to the families of these members. African American SIG Update For several years, Le Comité’ s African American Special Int erest Group (SIG) has been w orking to create a database of East Baton Rouge Parish slave names. This inf ormation is being extracted f rom East Baton Rouge Parish conveyance, notarial, and other civil records. Six volunteers are currently w orking on the project, but more are needed to help pick up the pace. Volunteers should have access to a microfilm reader, as all records are available only on microf ilm. Most records are w ritten in English, but some may be difficult to read. Therefore, skill in reading poor handw riting is important . Names extract ed from the records can be input in a w ord processing or spreadsheet program, or may be hand w rit t en, to be input by another volunteer. Detailed instructions and examples w ill be provided. 2009 Annual Meeting Scheduled Le Comité has scheduled its 2009 annual meeting for Sunday, September 27 t h , at the Louisiana State Archives on Essen Lane. The main speaker w ill be Robert de Berardinis of Houston w ho w ill speak on t he Cuban Papers. His presentation w as previously scheduled for the 2008 meeting, w hich w as cancelled due to Hurricanes 3 E-M ail New slet t er (Le Com it é des A rc hiv es de la Louisiane, Inc.) Member Input Sought on Purchases Every year, Le Comité spends thousands of dollars on books, microf ilm, and other materials to donate to the State Archives Research Room. To better understand the members’ needs, the society conducted a survey in 2007. 2. Reference w orks that describe, catalog, invent ory, or ident if y Louisiana genealogical and historical collections. The survey asked four quest ions regarding the general types of microfilmed records the members w ould like the society to purchase, the parishes in w hich the members w ere most interested, the frequency of visits to the Archives, and the specific types of microfilm the members w ould like the society to purchase. A fifth question asked for any other comment s. 3. Histories of Louisiana parishes, cities, tow ns, landmarks, institut ions, industries, ethnic groups, and government. 4. Biographies figures. of Louisiana historical 5. General histories w ith a Louisiana connection. The top four choices for general types of microfilmed records to purchase w ere: parish courthouse records; church records; colonial records; and vital records. The top ten parishes of interest w ere: Orleans, East Baton Rouge, St. Landry, St. Martin, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, St. James, St. John, Ascension, and Assumption. The board w elcomes input on these priorities as w ell as specific books to acquire and donate to the Research Room Library. LHRAB Strategic Plan Meeting Several of the specific collections listed in the survey have already been purchased and donated to the State Archives. A report of these w ill appear in the March issue of le Raconteur. Plans are to conduct another survey later in 2009 to gain additional input. The Louisiana Historical Records Advisory Board (LHRAB) w ill meet at the State Archives on Monday, January 26 t h , at 10 a.m. The Board w ill discuss the St rat egic Plan and implement at ion strategies for 2009. Anyone interested in attending is asked t o RSVP by January 12 t h to Carolyn Lefebvre at the State Archives by phone (2 2 5 ) 9 2 2 -1 2 0 0 or by e-m ai l (clefebvre@sos.louisiana.gov). Over the past tw o years, the society has also stepped up it s book purchases, thanks to an infusion of funds from the donation and sale of a late member’ s personal collection.
