This department will provide you with a valuable volunteer experience. I encourage you to interact with the staff and learn all you can during your rotation. Be proactive and do not wait for the staff to approach you! Please check your email regularly for any updates and other emails I send out. It is your responsibility to check your email and the website regularly (at least once per week). The Care Extenders Pediatrics-B department consists of two components: 3rd floor Pediatrics and Child Life Playroom. 3rd Floor Pediatrics 1. Pediatrics is a department with infant to teenage patients. Patients seen here are in delicate conditions. The diseases in this department vary with age, sub-department, and season. These may include immuno-suppressive diseases, cancer, organ transplants, and infections. 3rd floor specifically has a high number of oncology patients. 2. There is an average of approximately 60 patients at any given time between the 3rd and 5th floor. Although, the 3rd floor is smaller, there are plenty of patients and staff available. 3. Report to the front desk and Charge Nurse or Unit Director at the start of every shift. The staff members will often have specific tasks for you to complete or patients to spend time with. 4. Duties include but are not limited to: Working with patients Shadowing nurses and doctors Running errands (lab, radiology, dietary) Checking patient rooms Stocking linen and items Feeding patients Some clerical work (putting together charts, filing paperwork) Spending time with patients Holding and feeding babies 5. What to do during down-time? Help ACPs answer phone lines and patient calls Restock isolation carts Ask questions! o Visit patient rooms! The kids can be very eager to play and have a friend around, but be sure that you pay attention to the isolation precautions! 6. Overall, you must remember to keep a positive attitude and to always ask if you want something. BE ASSERTIVE! The nurses are all busy and will not seek you out. Please learn to communicate effectively with the staff. You may talk to the staff and ask them questions about patients or other areas of interest. 7. If you have any problems with staff, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will do my best to make the situation better. 8. As in any other department, you are not allowed to touch the computer or bring in outside work. Cell phone use by a CE is considered an extreme failure to follow through with the CE contract, so please do not be tempted when seeing staff (who spend 12 hrs a day at the hospital) use their phones. Child Life Playroom We have implemented a more comprehensive Pediatric Volunteer Program that will have CEs working closely with both Child Life Specialists and Charge Nurses in Ronald Reagan Pediatrics. You will now complete 2 Child Life sessions PRIOR to volunteering on the floor, for shadowing and training purposes. 1. Scheduling for Child Life sessions begins immediately upon assignment to RRHPEDS. 2. Child Life sessions are offered daily. On weekdays, three Child Life sessions are offered: a morning session 9am-12pm, an afternoon session 1:30-4:30pm, and an evening session 5:30- 8:30pm (no evening session offered Friday). 3. On weekends, only a morning session 9:30am-1:30pm is offered. 4. Only 2 CEs can attend each Child Life session. 5. You must complete 2 Child Life sessions BEFORE your floor shifts. 6. For your session, report to the Child Life Specialist at the Playroom on the 5th floor of Ronald Reagan Hospital. 7. After your second session, you will complete a developmental post-test and turn it in to Child Life. This will count as your proof of completion. Tips on Success: Be proactive Remember: you’re there to help AND get clinical experience! Ask what not the hospital can do for you, but what you can do for the hospital! Get to know the Care Partners, Nurses, AND Doctors, the entire hospital staff! Get to know the Unit Director (Chai-Chi Huang). She is absolutely amazing and will have something for you to do every shift. Actively talk to the nurses and care partners. They can be super busy and will show you procedures and such but you have to make the first effort. Frequently Asked Questions: What shifts can I do? o Monday through Sunday, 7-11AM, 11AM-3PM, 3-7PM, 7-11PM What is my uniform? o Care Extender polo with khaki pants and white tennis shoes. Your polo must be tucked in with your ID badge clipped at the collar, facing forward. What do I do when I get injured while I’m on shift? o Tell the charge nurse, go to OHF in Westwood if during normal business hours and you are able to, and page both Silva Thomas and Stephanie Hinojosa as soon as possible. When do I sign up for shifts? o The 10th thru the 15th of the previous month. For example, for December you are able to sign up starting November 10th. If I need to sign up for an extra shift, when do I email my DC? o You should allow at least three days to sign up for additional shifts to give the DC enough time to schedule you and update the calendar. What kind of isolation rooms can we go into? o Remember that the neon green colored “AIRBORNE PRECAUTION” and teal “AIRBORNE AND CONTACT PRECAUTION” notifications on doors means that you CANNOT GO INTO THE ROOMS. These rooms require the custom “ducky masks”/N95 Respirators. There are currently none of these on the floor. However, you CAN AND SHOULD go into the orange “DROPLET” precaution and red ISOLATION precaution room. They are completely okay if you wear the proper protective equipment specified on the charts (i.e. mask, glove, gown, etc.) Shift Calendar: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApFX4uG2beBWdE5Qck5yemFHeVd5VDRPWWN VMUtFQnc&usp=sharing **The calendar is located at the bottom of the page under Childlife and RRH PEDS B tabs, respectively.
