F rom palaces to prisons and a variety of communities in between, season two of the anthology series Pacific Heartbeat shares the heart, mind, and soul of Pacific Island culture. This month, four independent films continue the tradition of both entertaining and enlightening viewers as stories of the past, present, and future of these tropical paradises are told. See them on WYCC Sundays at 4 p.m., with encore presentations Wednesdays at 7 p.m. One of the documentaries takes place in Tonga, a small island nation as distant from modernity as it is physically from the United States. Discover how the island reacts to unwelcome visitors—and how those visitors react to being in a distant land. The other three documentaries this season focus on Hawaii, with a special emphasis on its music and dance. From concerts to casual backyard jam sessions and a world-class hula competition, the Hawaiian people embrace their history while welcoming contemporary culture. 6 l wycc.org Na Lani ‘Eha from ‘Iolani Palace: The Music of Hawaiian Royalty Sunday, May 5 at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. The luxurious ‘Iolani Palace, the only royal palace in the United States, opens its doors for some of Hawaii’s most beloved musicians as they perform songs composed by the last members of Hawaii’s ruling monarchy. The palace’s executive director and curator share the historical background of the stately home, while the musicians explain the royal repertoire’s cultural significance. Tonga: The Last Place on Earth Sunday, May 12 at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. Ethnic Tongans who have created a life in the United States are being deported after being convicted of murder, gang violence, and other serious crimes. They are forced to leave their families and the country they know, only to return to the peaceful island nation of Tonga to serve their jail time. With the community on the island wary of their arrival, how will these hardened criminals adapt and survive? Will their presence change Tonga: The Last Place on Earth? Let’s Play Music! Slack Key with Cyril Pahinui & Friends Sunday, May 19 at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 22 at 7 p.m. Cyril Pahinui, who was previously featured in Season One’s “Waimea ‘Ukulele and Slack Key Guitar,” continues to carry on the family tradition as a master slack key guitar musician. His father, the late Gabby “Pop” Pahuini, is considered to be the godfather of the Hawaiian slack key guitar. Cyril welcomes viewers to an intimate backyard performance in the country community of Waimanalo. Hula, Language of the Heart Sunday, May 26 at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 29 at 7 p.m. Experience hula like never before during the 2012 Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, also known as the “Olympics of Hula.” Performers compete over the course of four days in the Miss Aloha Hula solo competition, Hula Kahiko (ancient Hawaiian dance), and Hula ‘Auana (modern Hawaiian dance). The elegance, power, and rich storytelling of this ancient art form provides viewers with a thought-provoking look at hula’s role in the past, present, and future of Hawaii’s people. Island Info TONGA The Kingdom of Tonga is actually an archipelago with 170 islands—only 36 of which are inhabited. The largest island is Tongatapu, which is where the capital city of Nuku’alofa is located. Tonga has a population of over 106,000, which is slightly more than the population of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Tongan rulers created a monarchy over 1,000 years ago. Today, Tonga is the only monarchy remaining in the Pacific, with King George Tupou V as the current ruler. Food is an important part of Tongan society. Two of their favorite traditional dishes are ‘ota ‘ika, raw fish marinated in lemon and coconut cream, and lu pulu, corned beef and coconut milk wrapped in taro leaves. ‘Lo, faka molemole! (Which is “Yes, please!” in Tongan.) Kauai Oahu HAWAII Molokai Lania Maui There are six major islands in Hawaii: Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lania, Maui, and Hawaii. Hawaii Oahu is home to most of Hawaii’s population and the capital: Honolulu. Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959, but was first settled by Polynesians around 1,500 years ago. King Kamehameha united all of the Hawaiian islands in 1810, after many years of conflict. There are four commissioned statues of the king: three in Hawaii, and one in Washington, D.C. Every Kamehameha Day (June 11th), all four statues are ceremoniously draped with flower lei to celebrate the man known as Hawaii’s greatest king. The Merrie Monarch Festival, featured in Pacific Heartbeat’s “Hula, Language of the Heart,” began in 1963 as a way to perpetuate, preserve, and promote the art of hula and the culture of Hawaii. It is now known as the world’s premier hula competition. Through this festival, thousands of people around the world have learned about the history and culture of Hawaii and this uniquely Hawaiian dance. One-Minute Biography with Saul David Saul David is what you might call a “war buff.” He has written ten nonfiction books and two historical fiction books, all about different aspects of war and the military. Born in Monmouth, England, in 1966, he began reading military history books at the age of 10, and knew that he wanted to be a writer by the time he was a teenager. When he was 25, he began writing his first book. David spent his college years learning about military history. He earned an M.A. in History from the University of Edinburgh and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Glasgow, and is now a professor of military history at the University of Buckingham, where he is also the Program Director for their M.Phil. in Military History. In addition to being an author and professor, David has appeared on over two dozen television programs and over a dozen radio programs. He has also led two history tours to India and one on The World ship, traveling between Japan and South Korea. Other lecture venues have included the National Army Museum and the Imperial War Museum. To help commemorate Memorial Day (May 27), David brings his expertise to WYCC PBS Chicago in the three-part series How to Go to War (airing Sundays at 5 p.m. starting May 12, with encore episodes Mondays at 9 p.m.), where he leads viewers beyond the battlefield and into the logistics of preparing for war. The series first aired in his native England in 2012 under the title “Bullets, Boots and Bandages: How Wars are Really Won.” WYCC PBS Chicago offers teachers of different grade levels an excellent selection of high-interest, educationally rich programs for students, along with accompanying resources—absolutely free!
