LAB REPORT ASSIGNMENT!
!
!
How many paperclips? !
(This lab will enable you to practice setting up a simple experiment, collecting data, and complete a
formal lab report. Do not forget to follow all the safety rules!)!
!
This simple lab pertains to the concept of water surface tension (I will share some details with you
in class, even though the actual topic is not important for now)!
!
You’ll work in groups of 3, and your primary goal will be to produce a beautiful, interesting, neat,
and accurate lab report. This lab report will be a product of the hard work you’ve done over the last
two weeks and your first “big grade”.!
!
So…!
!
You’ll be working in groups of 3 students.!
!
Each group will have a beaker, graduated cylinder, plastic cup, dropper, paper clips and water (or
water-soap solution, depending on your particular group)!
!
Procedure:!
!
1. Add 290 ml of water (water-soup solution) into your paper cup (we’ll practice the best way to
accomplish this)!
2. One by one, add as many paper clips into you cup as you can. Stop counting when the water
overflows.!
3. Repeat the step 1 and 2 and average your data.!
4. Record the average number of paper clips on the class data table (on the whiteboard) !
5. Copy the class data and use them to complete a formal lab report.!
!
Your lab report must include ALL the steps that we’ve discussed and practiced in class.
Please see the sample we’ve completed together.!
