A Note From the Editors
It is not the policy of Synapse to run opinion articles anonymously, but we have broken that rule
to publish the accompanying article on Proposition 8.
We do so because we think it is important for all shades of opinion within the campus community
to be heard. We do so because we have printed many articles from those opposing Prop 8, but
hadn’t received any from the other side.
Efforts were made to get the writer to agree to use his name, but he refused, citing fear of
harassment. While we devoutly hope that would not be the case, we were sobered by a column
on November 23 by the San Francisco Chronicle’s Editorial Page Editor John Diaz. He wrote:

A supporter of Proposition 8, fed up with what he believed was the gay community’s and “liberal
media’s” refusal to accept the voters’ verdict, fired off a letter to the editor.
“Please show respect for democracy,” he wrote, in a letter we published.
What he encountered instead was an utter lack of respect for free speech.
Within hours, the intimidation game was on. Because his real name and city were listed – a
condition for publication of letters to The Chronicle – opponents of Prop. 8 used Internet search
engines to find the letter writer’s small business, his Web site (which included the names of his
children and dog), his phone number and his clients. And they posted that information in the
“Comments” section of SFGate.com – urging, in ugly language, retribution against the author’s
business and its identified clients.
We at Synapse would like to think that this would never happen at UCSF, but finally decided to
let the accompanying article run anonymously, to spare the writer of any of the harassment that
has occurred since the passage of Prop 8.
In this democracy, the way to rectify errors at the polls is to convince a majority at a future
election of the rightness of your cause. No matter how passionately one feels about an issue, it
is important to maintain a civil dialogue and a reasoned debate.

A Galt attorney claims his son is being harassed, even attacked, by a Galt High teacher for
his views on Proposition 8.

Len ReidReynoso, who also sits on the school district's Bond Oversight Committee, said his
son, Tarl, has been teased and even made a public example by Alex Bauer, who teaches
economics and advanced placement American government.
Bauer, who is president of the Galt
Federation of Teachers union, said the
allegations are false.

Additionally, according to a letter sent to
Superintendent Tom Gemma on Thursday,
ReidReynoso said his son has been slapped
and even received death threats from fellow
students because he supports Proposition 8.
The proposition would remove the right for
same-sex couples to marry in California. Tarl ReidReynoso does not support same-sex
marriage, according to his father.

ReidReynoso's 17-year-old son was among the contingent last week who protested the
California Teachers' Association's donation to fight against the proposition by staying home
from school. Gemma said at that time the high school received about 30 calls from parents
keeping their students home for that reason.

Because of his efforts in helping organize the protest, ReidReynoso said his son was made
an example by Bauer, who allegedly presented to the class an out-of-state court case which
states that blocking students while handing out flyers was not allowed.
Upon reading this case to the class, ReidReynoso said Bauer substituted Tarl's name and
other personal information for the person in the court case.
"This was implying to all of the students present that Tarl, by supporting Proposition 8 and
actively taking a political stand, was a bad person and had done something illegal … This
presentation by an adult teacher was in poor judgment and may even be itself illegal," he
wrote to Gemma.
ReidReynoso, who said he does not plan to explore legal action against Bauer, said his son
is not the only victim. Two parents have contacted him as an attorney to see what their
options against on-campus harassment over Proposition 8 are.
"The parents of these harassed students are afraid to come forward due to fear of retaliation
for their children at Galt High School," he said. "These parents lack confidence that the
current administration will protect their children."
In addition to alleged incidents by Bauer, ReidReynoso said that one of these verbal
"assaults" was over a three-day period and at the hands of a substitute teacher.

It is unclear how the district will handle the issues or if ReidReynono's was the only
complaint, and Gemma was out of the office Thursday.

ReidReynoso said he would like a public apology from the teacher for what he calls "pure
intimidation" and assurance from the district that what he terms harassment won't occur in
the future.

even when it is voted for on a ballot. We do
not seek to suppress political speech. We

$600,000 in non-monetary donations (including $190,000 from the
LDS Church). The Protect Marriage coalition was not the only
money-gathering committee in favor of Prop 8, but it was by far the
largest. All the other committees combined gathered less than $4
million. According to our research, at least half of the monetary
contributions were from individual Mormons.

Mormons For Proposition 8
Donors
There are about 770,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints in California, according to the most recent statistics
published in its 2007-2008 Almanac. These LDS Church members
account for about 2% of California’s population. In a letter dated
June 29, 2008, Mormon leaders in Salt Lake City called for church
members to work hard to pass Proposition 8 in California. Proposition
8 is a proposed Constitutional Amendment that would change the
state constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a
woman.
Many, if not most, Mormons have responded to the church leaders’
request for assistance on this matter by actively campaigning for and
donating to protectmarriage.com. All donations of $1,000 or more
are reported daily to the California Secretary of State. Smaller
donations are reported less often.
How much money have LDS donors provided to this campaign? That
is what this website is all about. Can a small stone make a big ripple
as it rolls forth? Are Mormon contributors a significant source of
money and manpower in this election?

Why Oh Why?
Trying to make sense of a world gone mad.

About Me
The Mormons Stole Our Rights
I am still really hurt and pissed about the
passage of the anti-marriage-equality
Y|O |Y
Capital District, New
amendments. I know I have Mormon
readers, and I have to be careful that I
don't hurt them by lashing out from my own
pain, but I think the LDS church is chiefly
responsible for this whole debacle.
Photo and info via Towleroad. A petition
drive has begun to the IRS to strip the
Mormon church of its tax exempt status:
"Section 501(c)(3) describes corporations,
and any community chest, fund, or
foundation, organized and operated
exclusively for religious, charitable,
scientific, testing for public safety,
literacy, or educational purposes, or to
foster national or international amateur
sports competition (but only if no part of
its activities involve the provision of athletic facilities or equipment), or for the
prevention of cruelty to children or animals, no part of the net earnings of which
inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual, no substantial part of
the activities of which is carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting, to
influence legislation (except as otherwise provided in section (h)), and which does not
participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distribution of statements),
any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public
office."
I doubt signing the petition on Mormons Stole Our Rights (scroll to bottom) will do any good,
but it made me feel a little better knowing that I'm at least doing something. Go over and
sign. As with all online petitions, use an email address where you are comfortable getting
future updates.

I've long been opposed to political churches being treated the same as strictly
religious ones; it gives them a leg up on other charities, which is unfair.

It’s been just two years since a small group of friends and I started
Californians Against Hate to draw attention to the mega-donors
to California’s Proposition 8 campaign. It’s been a busy 23 months.
We began on July 18, 2008 by helping to assemble a coalition of
LGBT organizations and labor in San Diego to boycott Doug
Manchester’s three hotels. Doug Manchester had contributed
$125,000 in very early money to quality and pass Proposition 8,
which took marriage rights away from millions of Californians. Why
should we support his three hotels, only to have that money used
against us?

If our opponents want to take away our rights, then
we will fight back. We will let the world know who
these donors are.

We have led three other boycotts against the biggest donors to
Proposition 8. We have settled two; one against Bolthouse Farms
and another against Garff Automotive Group. Both had family
members who contributed $100,000 to pass Prop 8. Now both
companies are generous supporters of a variety of LGBT
organizations.
The Five for Fred campaign is
asking supporters to spread
awareness and donate five
dollars (or whatever you can
give) to Fred Karger's costly
legal battle. Fred's a citizen
activist fighting against a team
of high-priced lawyers from
the National Organization for
Marriage and the Christian

Alliance Defense Fund. They

During the summer of 2008, we discovered the active involvement of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) in

the Yes on 8 campaign.
The Commission prosecuted the case, and conducted an

Our one remaining boycott is against Terry Caster’s A-1 Self
Storage Company. Terry Caster and his family gave a whopping
$693,000 to Prop 8. Caster was even quoted in the San Diego UnionTribune saying that gay marriage “would create a sick society.”
Mormon families contributed approximately $30 million of the $40
million raised, the Church produced 27 slick commercials, put up an
expensive web site, bussed in thousands of volunteers from Utah,
had massive phone banks yet only reported a mere $2078 in nonmonetary contributions three days before the election. Two weeks
later I filed a sworn complaint with the California Fair Political
Practices Commission (FPPC) against the Mormon Church for not
reporting its vast financial involvement in the campaign.

The Manchester Hotels boycott exceeded our wildest expectations.
According to their own admission, the boycott is costing the
Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel alone approximately $1 million per
month. This is due to dozens of canceled large meetings and
conventions at Manchester’s flagship property, and thousands of
individuals and businesses who refuse to cross our picket line.
Manchester also sold his Idaho hotel, and now rumors abound that
his brand new $400 million Grand del Mar Resort in San Diego is in
receivership. It has recently been reported that Global Hyatt
Corporation may be buying a majority interest in his Manchester
Grand Hyatt. The sale was just approved by the San Diego Port
Commission.
Rights Equal Rights (formerly Californians
Against Hate) was established in July 2008 to draw
attention to the major donors to the Yes on Prop 8
campaign. These contributors gave $40 million to
amend the California Constitution to take away the
right of same-sex couples to marry.

unprecedented 19 month investigation of the Salt Lake City based
Church’s finances. Three weeks ago the FPPC found the Mormon
Church guilty of 13 counts of late reporting and they were fined

irregularities in the 36 year history of the FPPC.
Case 2:09-cv-00058-MCE -DAD Document 249-1
I also have done battle with the Mormon Church’s front group, the
infamous National Organization for Marriage (NOM). I have
challenged all of their false and misleading actions for the last two
years. It was all of their arrogant and illegal campaign activities last
fall in Maine that was the final straw.
NOM contributed over $1.9 million to take away that state’s recently
passed right to marry for all, and completely disregarded Maine’s
long-standing election law in the process. NOM was required to
report all its contributor names of $100 and more to election officials.
NOM refused, and continues to refuse to turn over their records,
even after being ordered to do so by three federal judges and the
Attorney General of Maine. I have attended three separate
Commission meetings in Maine to make sure they comply with the
Maine election law.
As a result of all my efforts, I was subpoenaed by the National
Organization for Marriage last September as part of their federal law
suit, ProtectMarriage.com v. Bowen. That law suit was filed in
California by the official Yes on Prop 8 committee and NOM to
invalidate all campaign reporting laws in California. They subpoenaed
me strictly to harass me and make me spend a lot of money. Thanks
to the generous support of so many of you who contributed to my
legal defense fund, Five for Fred, most all of the legal costs have
been covered.
Now as we take on new challenges and go in new directions, we have
passed a Board resolution to officially change our name. From this
day forward, Californians Against Hate will be known as Rights Equal
Rights.
Our new name reflects our new direction and makes us more
national in scope.
Rest assured, that I have never been more determined and
motivated to help lead the LGBTQ community in our fight for full
equal rights in this country.
Younger people who begin to realize that they might be lesbian, gay,
bi-sexual transgender or queer will soon be afforded all the same
rights as their brothers, sisters friends and neighbors.
That is what our founding fathers had in mind when they wrote in
the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by
their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among these are Life,
Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
We will settle for nothing less.
Best regards,
Fred Karger

Prejean was greeted with a mixed reaction from the audience. Boos followed by applause. And the

Perez then blasted her on his video blog calling it the "worst answer in pageant history." He also
made comments that he has since apologized for. Now he's asked her out for coffee to "talk."
The directors of the Miss California pageant condemned her answer on Monday morning.
"As co-executive director of Miss CA USA and one of the leaders of the Miss CA family, I am
personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a

Further, she informed the entertainment site that her sister is a gay rights activist in the Air Force.
By the way, her sister was more sympathetic than Hilton.
“She was just in my hotel room and she said, ‘Sis, I’m not offended by anything that you said. We
have two different opinions and I love you because of it. I love you because you stood up for what
was right, and it’s not a matter of being gay or not gay, it’s a matter of you competing for Miss

On one area both Hilton and Prejean agree: her answer killed her chances of winning the
competition.
