Read chapters 1-‐ 4 in AP Biology Text Book, “Biology in Focus” and complete assignment below. These are introductory chapters, which deal with basic chemistry and cell structure. It is important that you read the text and study all the associated visuals and diagrams – this will help you get a deeper understanding of the concepts. Questions and other resources to help you understand the topics are given in the attachment. 2. Read the book, Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-‐Billion Year History of the Human Body, 2008, by Neil Shubin and complete the bulleted list below. This book, which allows you to look at yourself and your world in a new light, will be your introduction to AP Biology and will be referenced many times during the school year. While reading the book is the best option; you may choose to watch the videos (3 parts) based on this book. Here is the link: http://www.pbs.org/your-‐inner-‐fish/home/ if you choose to watch videos • (Hand – written) Summarize/make a bulleted list the biological concepts/topics discussed in each episode/chapter. About half a page for each chapter if reading or about 2 pages for each episode. Also note the different science/biology related careers that you come across as you read/watch • Note any questions that arise or any thoughts, opinions for each chapter/episode. Write a minimum of three questions for discussion that you develop based on concepts
addressed in the book or thoughts that may have been triggered by the reading the book
(these may be used when we discuss the book on the first week of school)
• There will be a book discussion in class during the first week of school – participation is mandatory.

Summer Homework perspectives from CJCP AP Bio students from 2014-‐ 2015: Survival Guide to AP Bio
Overall View: Yes, AP Bio is hard, but don’t give up you can do it!
Sum m er work: The summer work is important because it gives you a small feel of what class will be
like. It is also very interesting, and it is another source you can bring into your work. The summer
work encompasses the whole central idea of AP Bio, and is quite interesting and enjoyable.
Over the summer, you will receive an assignment and you will be required to read a book.
MAKE SURE YOU READ IT. The book is like an overview of what you will be learning in
AP Bio. Over the summer, try to figure out what techniques work for you as far as taking
notes, understanding concepts, and learning your vocabulary words
You took a big step getting into AP Biology especially with Ms. Doshi, but I have a couple of tips
that will help you on your journey that you are about to endure. These tips will make your
experience much easier TRUST ME! So lets start where it all begins. Your summer before you
finally walk into your AP Biology classroom there is work you MUST complete. There is this book
you have to read which is called Your Inner Fish, make sure you read it! It will tie topics within
the classroom together. Practice your annotation skills over the summer, find which ones work best
for you because annotating over the school year will help you so much. Vocabulary cards may seem
a bit childish at first but make sure you write all your vocabs out and test yourself randomly it
helps you stay sharp on words so that you are not lost when they come up on the exam or in class.
Summer work: It’s really important to do it so then you will get a good background in the
topics that will be covered in the class. The book Your Inner Fish will help you so much. There will be
so many lessons and homework where you will see a topic you recognize from the summer reading and
that is so helpful with completing the assignments and understanding new topics. The online textbook
Get Ready for Biology is helpful as well, it gives a basic overview of many important topics, especially
basic biochemistry.
