Using the Lewis J. Ort Library’s Online Periodicals Collection Periodical titles, including scholarly journals, in the Lewis J. Ort Library’s collection are increasingly being subscribed to in online‐only format. Access to these titles is provided through the Research Port electronic resource gateway where you may search or browse journal contents. Research Port provides access to the full text of over 80 journal titles subscribed to directly by the Ort Library as well as to over 20,000 publications made available through databases such as Academic Search Complete and LexisNexis Academic that aggregate the contents of periodicals. Please note that periodical titles made available by aggregators are susceptible to cancellation at any time since the subscription agreements are between the journal publishers and the database vendors. Step 1. Connect to the Research Port Gateway Research Port is the gateway to databases and journals in electronic/online format for all cooperating University System of Maryland Libraries and is accessed via the Internet. Research Port is available both on‐ and off‐campus. You must have a valid FSU ID card and be registered in the Library's patron database to access Research Port off‐campus. Registration is conducted at the Ort Library's Circulation Desk. Log into Research Port ¾ In the Library, click on the Research Port icon on the desktop screen of any PC. You will automatically be logged into the system. ¾ From any computer on the FSU campus, point your web browser to http://researchport.umd.edu. You will automatically be logged into the system. ¾ From off‐campus or to log into your Research Port account (“My Research Port”), point your web browser to http://researchport.umd.edu (click on “login” at the top of the screen if you are on‐campus). Select “Frostburg State University” as your campus. You will then be prompted to enter the 14‐digit barcode number from your FSU ID card and your last name. After entering this information, click on the “Login” button. Step 2. Switch to the Journal Collection Search Screen Once you are successfully logged into Research Port, you will be at a “Search for Databases” screen. This is the screen from which you would begin conducting a search for information by subject or topic. To access the Ort Library’s online periodicals/journal collection, simply click on the Journals tab at the top of the screen. You will then be taken to the “Search for Journals that are Online” screen: Click on the “Journals” tab to access the
Ort Library’s periodicals collection online.
Step 3. Searching/Browsing the Journal Collection There are three methods of locating a journal in the online collection: • By Journal Name • By ISSN • By Category (Subject/Topic) The screen shots below demonstrate locating a journal by name and category. Searching by Journal Name Simply type in the periodical title in the by journal name box and click on the find journal button. You may enter the first few letters or words of the title if the “starts with” button is filled. If you are uncertain of the exact name of the journal, click the “contains” button to search on words that appear anywhere in the periodical title. The Journal of Accountancy is searched in the following example: Type in the journal title and click on
“find journal.”
Research Port will retrieve journal titles alphabetically, beginning with your search terms, as shown below. If the journal title you are looking for is not listed, it is not available in online format. Click on the “catalog” link near the top of the screen to search catalogUSMAI to see if the Ort Library has the journal in its print or microfilm collections. Click on one of the links below the journal title to access its full text. Coverage for the journal is described in the link: Journal Title
Click on “add to lists” button to add a journal
title to your personal list. Note: You must be
logged into Research Port using your FSU ID
card to save personal lists for future retrieval
under the “My Lists” tab at the top of the
screen.

Please note that the varying sources of full text for journals in Research Port (as noted in parentheses next to the coverage links) will utilize the unique web interfaces of database vendors. Searching by Category Click on the by category link on the “Search for Journals that are Online” screen to browse the Ort Library’s online journal collection. You will retrieve a list of broad subject categories: Select one of the broad subject
categories for a list of
subcategories related to that topic.

Locating an Article by Citation You can also search for specific articles in Research Port if you have a citation. Most Research Port screens contain a Looking for a specific article? box on the right side. Type in as much citation information as you have (journal name is required) into the box and click on the Find article button. In the example below, title, journal name, year, and volume are known: To locate an article using
citation information, enter
as much as you know in
this box. Journal name is
required.
If the article is available in full text in Research Port you will see the following screen: Article citation
Click on the Go
button to retrieve the
text of the article.
Click on the go button to retrieve the full text of the article. You may have to browse the issue of a journal to call up the specific article, depending on the database from which it is retrieved.
