wills or other estate documents.
Other milestones in 2013:
2013: Moving Toward Sustainability
MinnPost made major strides toward sustainability in
2013. For the fourth year in a row, we ran a surplus.
This year’s surplus was larger – $118,072 – enabling
us to make substantial progress on building our
reserves to a more prudent level.

We received significant new grants from the
Knight, McKnight, Bush and Joyce Foundations,
plus commitments from Allina and the Robina
Foundation and the Northwest Area Foundation.
Grants are listed on page 4.

We hired an additional staff reporter, Briana
Bierschbach, who previously worked for Politics in
Minnesota. MinnPost now has five full-time
reporters, along with more than a dozen writers on
contract. Journalism highlights start on page 2.

We established our second groupfunded beat,
raising $100,000 to begin coverage of Mental
Health and Addiction issues. Sarah T. Williams
launched the beat in November. She joins Ron
Meador, now in his second year on our pioneering
groupfunded beat, Earth Journal. Major donors to
groupfunded beats are listed on page 4.

UCare became our first overall site sponsor,
sponsoring the whole site every Monday in
addition to supporting Second Opinion. We also
added a new major sponsor, People Incorporated,
supporting Mental Health and Addiction coverage.
Other sponsors, partners and major advertisers
are listed on page 4.
We ended 2013 with $275,755 in cash on hand, our
highest total in five years. This should reduce our need
to borrow money in the summer, when our revenues
are typically low. More good news:

Advertising/sponsorship revenue resumed its
pattern of growth, finishing the year 19.5% higher
than in 2012.

Membership continued its steady growth, with
2,226 donors in 2013, up more than 6%.

Our list of email newsletter subscribers shot up
24% between April and December, as a result of
our first concerted effort to build that list.

Our social media lists continued to grow –
MinnPost now has 10,831 likers on Facebook, for
example, up 55% since last year.

Based on the traffic-measuring service Quantcast,
more than 100,000 people visit MinnPost at least
twice a month – double where we were just a few
years ago.



In recognition of the increasing size of our operation,
and our desire to build revenues so we can invest more
in high-quality journalism, we’re looking to fill a new
high-level leadership position, Publisher of MinnPost.
This person will oversee most of the business-side
operations, reporting to Joel, who will continue as
CEO and Editor. Laurie will continue to direct our
major donor efforts, major events and board relations.
Go to http://bit.ly/1ht1U6R for more information.
We sold out the Pantages Theatre for MinnRoast
2013. About 950 people including 64 sponsors
enjoyed the gentle skewering of journalists,
politicians and others including Gov. Dayton,
Sens. Franken and Klobuchar, Mayors RT Rybak,
Chris Coleman and Don Ness, Viking punter Chris
Kluwe, Guthrie director Joe Dowling, former Sen.
Majority Leader Amy Koch and gubernatorial
candidate Tom Horner. Sponsor list is on page 6.
As always, we give heartfelt thanks to our hardworking editors, technology and business staff,
journalists, advertisers, sponsors, Board of Directors,
Advisory Council, comment moderators and other
volunteers. And extra thanks to all our donors, from
Copy Boys and Girls to Media Moguls and beyond.
Donor names are listed starting on page 8.
MinnPost’s Sixth Anniversary Celebration at
Solera attracted 37 sponsors and almost 350
attendees. The atmosphere was festive – in today’s
media landscape, every year is worth celebrating!
Sixth Anniversary sponsors, silent auction and
raffle donors are listed on page 7.
If you haven’t yet become a donor, please take that
important step in 2014. Ongoing support from our
readers makes courageous, independent Minnesota
journalism a sustainable reality.
The four-year growth capital campaign to Take
MinnPost to the Next Level passed $900,000 in
total pledges. And we launched a Planned Giving
program to recognize donors who have notified us

partial shutdown of the federal government.
Washington correspondent Devin Henry reported on
our congressional delegation’s role in this political
drama (Rep. Michele Bachmann got a lot of national
air time) and, along with Cynthia Boyd and other
MinnPost journalists, described the shutdown’s impact
on Minnesota. Eric Black made major contributions as
well, explaining congressional procedures, hidden
agendas and political motivations that led to the
shutdown mess. And Cyndy Brucato stayed in touch
with Tea Party groups in Minnesota throughout the
year.
Journalism Highlights of 2013
Same-sex marriage. An orchestra lockout. The
Minneapolis elections. Obamacare. Gridlock in
Washington. Gun control. A struggling economy.
The past 12 months were filled with important and
interesting developments, and MinnPost’s journalists
provided thoughtful coverage of significant news
events and public-policy debates.
The quickly evolving marriage-equality story – from
legislative approval to the Aug. 1 beginning of samesex weddings and beyond – kept MinnPost reporter
Beth Hawkins busy all year. In the summer, she
teamed with photographer Terry Gydesen to show
preparations for Minneapolis’ City Hall weddings
all-nighter, and then covered the weddings and
celebrations on the big day.
MinnPost’s strength is analysis and interpretative
reporting, but Eric Black snagged several exclusive
stories. He was the first to report that Gov. Mark
Dayton would name David Lillehaug to the Minnesota
Supreme Court, that Don Shelby had decided not to
run for Congress, and that Jim Graves was dropping
out of the race to replace Bachmann. And Eric gets
points for a prescient analysis that predicted Bachmann
would not seek reelection well before she announced
her decision.
The Minnesota Orchestral Association’s lockout of the
Minnesota Orchestra musicians not only halted the
2012-13 season but continued until Jan. 14, 2014. The
St. Paul Chamber Orchestra lockout lasted until April.
Reporter Doug Grow and arts writers Pamela Espeland
and Michael Anthony kept readers informed of each
new development.
There was a lot going on in Washington in 2013, even
if Congress didn’t do much. That was one of the year’s
big stories: gridlock and the inability of Congress to
adopt almost any legislation. Devin Henry closely
followed Minnesota’s delegation throughout the
turbulent year, focusing on our members’ bills and
positions on public-policy issues. Devin produced
numerous in-depth and Minnesota-focused stories
about problems with Obamacare, sequestration cuts
and the debt limit, the debate over Syria, changes in the
Senate filibuster rule and Bachmann’s ethics case.
MinnPost’s readers were fully informed on the top
issues and developments out of Washington.
Karen Boros provided extensive coverage of the
Minneapolis mayoral race, which attracted 35
candidates. We put together a detailed Mayoral
Questionnaire on eight leading candidates. It proved
immediately popular with readers and produced
phenomenal traffic on Election Day as voters
apparently turned to it to help them decide.
We also did thorough coverage of the use of rankedchoice voting in Minneapolis and St. Paul, both on a
practical level and on policy questions through our
major project looking at Effective Democracy issues.
As part of the project, James Nord followed issues
surrounding judicial appointment and election
procedures, as well as such voter issues as expanded
early voting. He also tracked the rocky development of
MNsure, the state’s health exchange.
After the horrific shootings in Newtown, gun control
became a major national and state issue. Doug Grow
and James Nord covered efforts at the Legislature to
limit guns in Minnesota, and Eric Black explored the
history and debate over the meaning of the Second
Amendment. MinnPost also produced an innovative
story-and-graphic presentation that tracked every gunrelated death in Minnesota.
There were no major statewide elections in 2013, but
last year was still filled with political fireworks and
vigorous public-policy debates MinnPost covered and
analyzed.
The continuing slow economic recovery is especially
hard on the state’s most vulnerable. Community
Sketchbook reporter Cynthia Boyd documented
struggles with poverty and homelessness, and also
reported on success stories and Minnesotans who are
making extraordinary efforts to help others.
One of the biggest national stories of the year was the
Tea Party and its influence in Congress, which led to a
2
challenges of special-education, teacher contract
negotiations, MnSCU changes, education equity
and more.
Journalism Highlights, continued
Other MinnPost journalism highlights from 2013:

Briana Bierschbach, a talented journalist who has
covered state politics for the past three years,
joined MinnPost as a staff reporter to cover public
affairs, higher education, politics and other
important topics. Briana previously worked for
Politics in Minnesota and the Associated Press.

Sarah T. Williams debuted MinnPost’s new Mental
Health & Addiction coverage on Nov. 1, reporting
on anonymity in addiction recovery, final rules in
the national health-parity law, chronic pain’s
intersection with mental-health and addiction
issues, and more.



Working with the University of Minnesota’s
journalism school, MinnPost’s Sharon Schmickle
and student journalists produced an in-depth series
documenting predatory lending in Minnesota and
efforts to curtail it.
MinnPost's interactive team visualized Gov. Mark
Dayton's 2013 budget proposal, and collaborated
with reporters to track bills as they moved through
the Legislature. Our application has since been
repurposed by a number of other organizations
around the country. The team launched a
Minneapolis Crime Dashboard, which explores
crime trends in the city and is updated monthly. On
election night we reprised the Live Election
Results Dashboard, which provided up-to-theminute data from the Secretary of State as results
were reported.
At the Legislature, our journalists followed several
long-running stories, including legislative action
on a rare “no-gimmicks” balanced-budget
agreement and passage of the landmark same-sex
marriage law. We also thoroughly covered the
Legislature’s failure to raise the state’s minimum
wage.

Cityscape writers Judy Keen and Marlys Harris
and Minneapolis reporter Karen Boros followed
the ongoing public-policy issues surrounding the
new Vikings stadium and the adjacent Downtown
East development.

Beth Hawkins’ Learning Curve covered a very
wide range of education issues, including the

Ron Meador’s Earth Journal covered regional and
national environmental issues, including PolyMet’s
proposed mining project, the decline of Isle
Royale’s wolf population, fracking and Great
Lakes pollution.

Susan Perry’s popular Second Opinion helped
readers evaluate the latest research on issues
ranging from vitamin supplementation to the
psychology of commenters on news websites.

MinnPost partnered with WCCO and with
University of Minnesota professor Chris Ison and
his journalism students to do a two-part
investigation of problems encountered by students
in for-profit colleges and universities. Sharon
Schmickle directed MinnPost’s coverage.

Ongoing arts coverage featured Pamela Espeland’s
twice-weekly Artscape column, Jim Walsh’s music
and culture articles, Andy Sturdevant’s The Stroll
and Amy Goetzman’s coverage of the local books
scene.

MinnPost continued its partnership with the
MNopedia project of the Minnesota Historical
Society, creating new material for the MHS
website and publishing other weekly history items
from the site.

Photojournalists Daniel Corrigan, Bill Kelley, Jana
Freiband and others provided images enhancing
MinnPost’s coverage of 2013 events. Two
examples: the post-midnight same-sex marriages at
Minneapolis City Hall on Aug. 1 and the electionnight culmination of the Minneapolis mayor's race
were captured by photojournalist Terry Gydesen
with tireless skill and grace.
