UNIVERSITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
the
Newsletter
2012
Dear Friends,
Before I left on sabbatical last summer, I encouraged the
congregation to participate in what we called “envisioning
conversations.” Many of you accepted the opportunity to
share your ideas, concerns, and hopes for UPC. Since then,
the Session has continued the conversation, inviting our
various ministry teams to discern some specific initiatives for
the coming year. It’s exciting to see the leaders’ vibrant
commitment to sustaining our current ministries, as well as
setting some new challenges before the congregation.
I hope you’ll come to our catered luncheon in the Great Hall following worship on Sunday, November 4th.
During that lunch, we’ll share aspects of the vision that is emerging at UPC, and we’ll also highlight specific
initiatives we hope to accomplish in the coming year.
As you leave the lunch on November 4th, you can pick up an envelope containing your pledge card for 2013.
(Envelopes that are not picked up will be mailed the next day.)
Please prayerfully consider your pledge for 2013. Then bring your completed card to worship on Dedication
Sunday, November 11th. With joy and gratitude we will dedicate our pledges during worship, after which
we’ll adjourn for fellowship, refreshments and music in the courtyard. Of course, if you’re unable to join us
for Dedication Sunday on November 11th, you may mail your pledge to the church office, or pledge online at
www.upcaustin.org.
The staff and Session have already made leadership pledges. The church staff collectively increased our
pledge by 22% over last year. Session members collectively increased their pledge by 14.7% over last year.
This increase indicates the level of commitment among the leaders of the church, and we hope it will inspire
you to help our congregation continue our outreach to our community and beyond.
Grace and Peace,
San
All Church Retreat
@ MoRanch
April 19-21, 2013
Registration for the Mo Ranch Retreat will begin
on November 11th in the courtyard. The Retreat
will be April 19-21, 2013, and the Rev. Dr.
Kristin Saldine, Associate Professor of
Homiletics at Austin Presbyterian Theological
Seminary will be our adult keynote speaker. So
mark your calendar and sign up when
registration opens. It’s a great way to get to
know your UPC family!
The All Church Retreat is a fun, family friendly weekend in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. There is
programming for children and youth of all ages, intergenerational activities, a worship service at the Chapel
on the Hill, and plenty of free time to relax, play, and reconnect. We hope you can join us!
Kristin Saldine is associate professor of homiletics at Austin Presbyterian Theological seminary. Before
joining the Austin seminary faculty in 2006 she served as minister of the chapel at Princeton Theological
Seminary and associate director of the Joe R. Engle Institute of Preaching.
A native of Sacramento, California, Kristin attended Whitworth College in Spokane, WA and San Francisco
Theological Seminary. She served congregations in Portland, Oregon and Anacortes, Washington before
earning her Ph.D. in practical theology at Princeton Theological Seminary.
Kristin’s academic interests include a concept she calls “geo-rhetorical homiletics,” an interdisciplinary
method through which theology, visual rhetoric, and geography provide a means to understand the
contextual and imagistic power of preaching. Kristin has presented papers at the Academy of Homiletics and
has published in Feasting on the Word, the Abingdon Women’s Preaching Annual, The Princeton Seminary
Bulletin, Lectionary Homiletics, and Austin seminary journals Insights and Communitas. She enjoys
preaching at conferences and local congregations.
Kristin’s hobbies include folk music, sailing, and documentary films. In her younger years she wanted to be a
folk singer, a cartographer, or a sea otter. Now she dreams of pony trekking in Iceland.
Book of Order Changes in Ordination Standards
Join us for a conversation
Now that the new Form of Government has taken effect in our denomination, questions are arising about the
implications of the changes, especially around the question of ordination standards. The most obvious
change is that the new language eliminates reference to sexual behavior as an explicit standard for ordained
office in the church, a reference that was added to the Book of Order in 1997. Prior to 1997, the Book of
Order contained no explicit language addressing sexuality or sexual practice as part of the standards for
ordination or installation.
The UPC Session is hosting a conversation following worship on November 18th in the Fellowship Hall to
discuss the implications of these Book of Order changes for the wider church. Ted Wardlaw, President of
Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, will lead our conversation.

We welcome Clint and Lindsay Wenk to UPC! Lindsay joins by reaffirmation of
faith and Clint joins by profession of faith. They have three daughters, Mallory (7
yrs. old), Hadley (5 yrs. old) and Shelby (2 yrs. old). Clint is a Professional
Services Manager at IBM, and Lindsay is a Client Partner at Bazaarvoice. Clint,
a native of Chicago, graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in Civil
Engineering. He now spends his free time coaching soccer, riding his bike and
cooking for his family. Lindsay was born in Amarillo, Texas and raised in
Edmond, Oklahoma. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a
B.A. in Letters. She says she doesn’t have any free time but if she did, she
would spend it reading, taking pictures of her kids or practicing yoga. The
Wenks decided to join the UPC family after spending 10 months as active
visitors.
We welcome Richard “Rick” and Evelyn “Eve” Lawrence to UPC.
Rick and Eve join UPC by transfer of letter from Webster
Presbyterian Church, Webster, TX. They are Meg McReynolds
parents. Rick grew up in Florida and went to college in Florida,
Indiana, and Georgia. He is retired from workig as a research
chemist and as a chemical sales and technical service
representative. He enjoys music and theater. Evelyn is also
retired from being a CPA and had worked on the Shuttle program for a subcontractor to NASA. She is an elder and has
served on the Education Committee and Staff and Planning
Committee of former churches. Rick and Eve met at a
Presbyterian Youth Camp when they were 15 years old. They
moved to Austin to be close to their daughters and
granddaughters. They have been visiting UPC and have enjoyed
the people and friendliness. Evelyn states that they joined UPC
because they liked the staff, the music and enjoy the people.
We welcome Amanda Utter to UPC! Amanda is married to Ryan and they have a 5 month old
son, Wyatt. She joins by transfer of letter from First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio.
Amanda joined UPC after being welcomed here by UPC members Lesley Anne (her sister)
and Jordan Maddox, who is San's godson. She graduated from Texas Christian University in
Fort Worth with a degree in RTVF and a minor in Theater. Amanda has several jobs, some of
which include being a voice over talent for dB Talent, co-owning a photography business,
and being a literary editor/writer. She loves to go to her family's ranch in South Texas and
ride horses, go dancing with her husband (they met at the Broken Spoke), and love on her
baby.
We welcome Marie Long to UPC! Marie joins by reaffirmation of faith. She is a native
Austinite, growing up in South Austin and attending St. John's Presbyterian Church on
Manchaca Road. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and was an active
member of the Longhorn Band. Needless to say, she is an avid Longhorn fan! Marie is a
recently retired educator, having taught mainly math and science in grades 3-6 for 37
years. For the last 30 years, she taught in the Round Rock Independent School District.
Marie’s brother, Max Werkenthin, and his wife Karen, are active members of UPC and
encouraged her to come for a visit. Since her 4-5 visits, she felt like UPC was the place for
her. Everyone is so sincerely friendly, wanting to know about you, and welcoming you at
each visit. After joining on Sunday, October 14, many people she had not yet met came up
and introduced themselves and welcomed her to UPC. That was a wonderful feeling! Also,
Pastor Williams' sermons ALWAYS hit home. It is almost like he knows what she’s thinking
and needing at that time. Marie lives with her parents, Max and Vivian Werkenthin and her
oldest daughter, Courtney Long. Courtney has cerebral palsy, is non- verbal and
wheelchair-bound. She is extremely smart and enjoys life to the fullest! Marie’s younger daughter, Kylee Long, just
moved to Dallas for her job. She works for a medical software company and serves as a training specialist, traveling all
over the US training doctors/clinical staff, etc. on use of the software they purchased. They are a very close family and
try to celebrate all birthdays and holidays together! This includes her brother, Max, and his son Max, and his family! Her
hobbies include gardening, reading, swimming, shopping...and spending time with family!
We welcome Jon and Stephanie Holmsten back to UPC! They have two
daughters, Edith and Natalie, and they are all pleased to be back at UPC. They
moved to the Bahamas about four years ago for Jon to work at a medical school
there. They enjoyed the Bahamas but are excited to be back in Austin as
Stephanie in on faculty in the UT International Relations and Global studies
program. The girls love being back in the church and being part of the Sound of
Angels.
We welcome JoAnne Sharp to UPC! JoAnne joins by transfer of letter from First
United Presbyterian Church of Bellefontaine, Ohio. She is a seminary student at
Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

Report on Luebo Partnership
Here is an update on the efforts of the Luebo Partnership to assist our sister church in Luebo, Congo. Most
recently we sent $3,000 to cover tuition for over 50 orphans in that community. We were able to send school
supplies, hospital supplies, and French/English dictionaries to a port in Maryland to be added to a shipment
by container that was organized by Congo Helping Hands. We also bought and sent a computer, printer, a
camera, and accessories with Woody Collins when he flew to Congo this past July. Additionally we
contributed the costs for sending 100 new mattresses to the hospital in Luebo, through Rivers of the World
and another organization who have been working on getting mattresses for a number of hospitals in Congo.
The church in Luebo , which is the center of the community, continues to deteriorate and we are always
looking for other members of UPC and beyond to help with fundraising and planning logistics to ensure the
repairs can be completed. If you are interested in helping, please contact Scott Collins at
scott@RxDonate.com.

from savory Pork, Jalapeno Pork, Bean, or Chicken tamales. Please place your order with
Sarah French at church, at sbradbur@alum.trinity.edu, or 210-882-6400. Cash or checks

Manos de Cristo’s mission is to empower low-income individuals to make their lives better.
Manos de Cristo was founded in 1988 to help impoverished residents of Austin suffering from
tooth decay and disease by providing dental treatment for free or reduced rates. Today, Manos
de Cristo operates a full-service dental clinic that serves more than 4,000 patients every year.
The organization also offers basic needs assistance with a food pantry and clothing closet, as well as English,
citizenship, and computer literacy classes. With the support of thousands of donors and volunteers, more than 16,000
Central Texans receive assistance each year from Manos de Cristo.
NEED A CRAYON? A BUCKET OF
SAND? CREPE PAPER? –
WE’VE GOT THAT!
UPC has a wonderful supply room
upstairs in Room 208 (formerly the
Children’s Library). You can find paint,
paper, scissors, rope, fabric, candles, seasonal supplies – and
several thousand other tools and treasures for art projects of all
kinds. Any group in the church is welcome to use the supply room
for any church event. If you’d like help collecting what you need,
send Kathy Escandell (education@upcaustin.org) a list of needed
items the week before your event.
If you have a donation for the supply room (things seem to pop up
in there on a regular basis), please either send Kathy an e-mail
letting her know you’re bringing something, or attach a note to the
items when you drop them off. It’s helpful to know that new
supplies are coming, and it’s important to know whether those
supplies are intended for particular groups and projects, or if
they’re available for general use.
On Sunday, 11-4-12, the
group will begin a look at
The Dalai Lama’s Toward
a True Kinship of Faiths:
How the World's
Religions Can Come
Together. On Amazon the
paperback or Kindle
editions are $11-12. Or contact Madelyn

would like to order a copy.

Another kind of Christmas Card...
The annual Christmas Party for UPCs UPLift clients will take place on December 11, 9
a.m.-12 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. This year, instead of collecting miscellaneous gift
items, we are asking for donations of $10 gift cards to grocery stores, drug stores, thrift
stores, popular chain stores, fast food restaurants—you name it. The $10 cards allow
for more even distribution, but please feel free to donate as many as you wish! It’s not
too early to start thinking about your donations as you go through the checkout line or
pick up a Slushee at the drive-through.
We will also be collecting crayons, coloring books, small stuffed toys, games, children’s
books.
THANK YOU...
The UPLift Team would also like to thank those of you who helped furnish a
whole house for a mom with six children. We have visited the home and know
your donations are being put to good use. Mrs. Jones asked us to express her
deep appreciation for all that the UPC congregation has done for her family.
A NEW ADDITION TO SERVICES...
At UPLift, we like to make connections with other churches and agencies who can
help us out. Thanks to the United Methodist Church Health Ministry, beginning in December a Wesley Nurse will come
to UPLift twice a month to do screening for high blood pressure, diabetes, and other medical conditions. Let’s hear if for
the Methodists!
No telling what we could get done if we Christians could work together in a truly ecumenical spirit among all
denominations.
The UPC Needleworkers will meet twice in November for fellowship. The first meeting will
be Thursday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. The second will be Thursday,
November 29, also at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. The purpose of the second meeting will be
to make final preparations for the Alternative Gift Market, which will be held the following
Sunday.
Alternative Gift Market
Come to the Alternative Gift Market following worship on Sunday, December 2, in UPC’s Great Hall.
You’ll find gifts to purchase in honor of those on your Christmas list. These gifts will benefit people

Deacon's Corner
Last month, this space featured the transportation ministry of the Deacons. This month, let's discuss something near and
dear to all of us - food! Another ministry of the Deacons is providing meals to church members in circumstances where
having a meal delivered can be a big blessing. The Deacons organize a Care Calendar (for example, when a baby is
born) and allow members of the congregation to supply those meals. It doesn't even have to be home-cooked, it just has
to meet the dietary needs of the family.
Let us know if this is something you are interested in and we will send you notifications when the
need arises.
