WORD talk show hosts Bob
McLain and Russ Cassell invited their listeners to join
them at the Chick-fil-a on
Woodruff Road last Friday at
Noon to show their support for
the Second Amendment to the
Constitution of the United
States that is under attack by
the Obama Administration and
their leftist supporters.
Hundreds of WORD listeners
turned out and filled more than
two blocks of sidewalks. They
carried American flags and hastily made signs.
McLain and Cassell are outspoken supporters of the Constitution and equally outspoken crit-

President Obama has instructed
Democrats in Congress to take
action immediately to enact legislation imposing tighter control on
guns.
He has asked for laws requiring
universal background checks on
everyone attempting to buy a gun.
The law already requires licensed
dealers to request background
checks. The Obama gun laws
would require background checks
before sales or trades could take
place between individuals. The
information would be used to
store information in a national gun
ownership database.
Leftists who want to disarm
Americans are advocating a database so government agents will
know who has weapons, what
kind and from whom they were
obtained. If universal background
checks become law, future legislation is expected to make it illegal
to possess a firearm not reported
to the federal government. The
ultimate goal is to eliminate private gun ownership. The only
people with guns under that scenario would be criminals and government agents.
The president has asked for
congress to ban all “military
styles and assault weapons; and
ban all magazines holding more
than 10 rounds.
Obama also called for congress
to put more federally funded cops

This was an agonizing decision,

On April 22, Virginia’s Governor,
John Letcher, with the approval
of the Virginia Convention of Del-

of all Virginia military and naval

at an enthusiastic reception in
Richmond, including these words:

military schools throughout the
world as the best examples of leadership and character in military
history. Both were distinguished
graduates of the U. S. Military
Academy and officers in the
United States Army. They were
faced with a momentous decision
when their sovereign state left the
Union. They resigned their commissions to defend their homeland.
President Eisenhower was
asked why he had a portrait of
Robert E. Lee hanging in the Oval

a letter:
“General Robert E. Lee was, in
my consideration, one of the supremely gifted men produced by
our nation. He believed
unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which
until 1865 was still an arguable
question in America; he was

President of SCPC
to Address

By Bob Dill
Ashley Landess, President of
the South Carolina Policy Council will be the guest speaker at the
January luncheon meeting of the
Greenville County Republican
Women’s Club.
The event will be held at the
Poinsett Club at Noon, Thursday
24 January. The cost is $16 and
reservations are required.
Landess will discuss the eight
reforms needed in South Carolina
government in order for the citizens of South Carolina to take the
power back from the politicians.
1. Restore Judicial independence – South Carolina is the only
state in which the legislature unilaterally appoints judges even
when vacancies occur.
2. Make the Governor fully accountable for the Executive
Branch – S. C. lawmakers control
the executive branch through a
complicated web of boards and
commissions.
3. Ensure a true citizen legislature by shortening sessions – Our
state has one of the nation’s longest legislative sessions: a system

... continued from Page 1
on the street.
The 23 executive actions are
listed below.
1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background
check system.
2. Address unnecessary legal
barriers, particularly relating to the
Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background
check system.
3. Improve incentives for states
to share information with the background check system.
4. Direct the Attorney General
to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun
to make sure dangerous people
are not slipping through the
cracks.
5. Propose rulemaking to give
law enforcement the ability to run
a full background check on an individual before returning a seized
gun.
6. Publish a letter from ATF to
federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run
background checks for private
sellers.
7. Launch a national safe and
responsible gun ownership campaign.
8. Review safety standards for
gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and sto-
that favors career politicians over
citizen- legislators.
4. Open the state’s secret incentives process – Corruption is virtually guaranteed when politicians
have the power to strike secret
deals with private companies using public money.
5. End lawmakers’ ability to police themselves – House and Senate members police their own ethics violations.
6. All South Carolina elected
officials should report their income sources – The public has
no way to ensure lawmakers don’t
personally profit from legislation
on which they vote.
7. Strengthen the state’s open
records law and abolish lawmakers’ exemption from it – There’s
no justification for lawmakers exempting themselves from the
state’s Freedom of Information
Law.
8. Enforce the state law that
mandates an open budget process – The law requires the governor to write “the” budget and
the legislature to hold “joint open
hearings” to debate it.
len guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
11. Nominate an ATF director.
12. Provide law enforcement,
first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and
prosecute gun crime.
14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for
Disease Control to research the
causes and prevention of gun violence.
15. Direct the Attorney General
to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new
gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop
innovative technologies.
16. Clarify that the Affordable
Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about
guns in their homes.
17. Release a letter to health
care providers clarifying that no
federal law prohibits them from
reporting threats of violence to
law enforcement authorities.
18. Provide incentives for
schools to hire school resource
officers.
19. Develop model emergency
response plans for schools,
houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
20. Release a letter to state
health officials clarifying the
scope of mental health services
that Medicaid plans must cover.
21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and
parity requirements within ACA
exchanges.
22. Commit to finalizing mental
health parity regulations.
23. Launch a national dialogue
led by Secretaries Sebelius and
Duncan on mental health.

Watch D.O.G.S. Heroes of the Hallways
League academy first middle school to implement program
PHOTO JAMES “CHIP” MOORE
Eric Snow, Executive Director and Cofounder of Watch D.O.G.S. speaks before a
cafeteria filled with concerned dads.
By James “Chip” Moore
In 1998 on March 24, two boys
met up in the woods outside their
school in Jonesboro, Arkansas,
after one pulled the fire alarm.
Armed with thirteen fully loaded
firearms, Mitchell Johnson, 13,
and Andrew Golden, 11, opened
fire on their classmates as they
exited the building 100 yards
away, killing five. Across the state
in Springdale, Arkansas, two men
feeling the impact of such a horrific event were compelled to do
something to ensure that schools
remain the safest place for children to be.
With the help of his friend, Jim
Moore, founder of watch D.O.G.S
(Dads of Great Students), started
making steps in creating a volunteer program for dads to become
more involved in day-to-day ac-
tivities in the school. Watch
D.O.G.S., a father-engagement
and educational initiative of the
National Center for Fathering, was
designed to encourage fathers
and father figures to be more involved in the educational process. The goals of the program
are to enhance school safety and
provide positive male role models.
“We never thought when we
started this program that all these
years later that we would see a
cafeteria in a school so many miles
away doing the same thing, filling
with men,” said Eric Snow, Executive Director and co-founder of
Watch D.O.G.S., while speaking to
the dads sitting in the cafeteria at
League Academy of Communication Arts in Greenville, SC.
League Academy will be the
Abstinence Education for Teens
first middle school in SC to be
implementing the Watch D.O.G.S.
program. Summit Drive, Lake Forest, and Stone Academy elementary schools have also implemented the program for their dads
and students.
“I’m a dad. I’m just a dad who
has committed himself to help out
with the Watch D.O.G.S. program
here at League. Nothing special
about me. I’m just a dad that understands what’s going on with
Watch D.O.G.S. Watch D.O.G.S is
a great program. Watch D.O.G.S.
is a dad’s program. It’s not about
the principal, or the assistant principal, it’s not about an assistant
or secretary doing all the work.
This is a program for us to do something for our kids and our families,” said Robert Hall, father of
two daughters.
Halls biggest regret was not
getting involved with the program
six years ago when he first heard
about it. After a “gentle nudge”
from his wife, Hall got involved
and it has been a life changing
program for him, his marriage, and
his family.
The program doesn’t cost dads
any money unless they want to
spend $15 for a Watch D.O.G.S. tshirt or hat. All that is asked from
dads is time, courtesy, and alertness.
“It’s really about your time. It’s
showing your family and your
kids that you really do care about
them, and that you want to be involved in their lives and their day
to day activities. It’s amazing all
the things I’ve learned about my
daughters and their teachers and
their schools and some of the challenges that they face,” said Hall.
When Lee and Snow took their
idea before the Arkansas superintendent he gave them a challenge to define the program that
they wanted to develop. While
developing the business plan
they sent out a questionnaire, with
two questions, to the teachers in
their area. The first question was
would you like to have a dad here
in some capacity? The second, if
you would, what would you have
us do? Every single teacher came
back in the affirmative. The list
they replied back with was very
much in common with each other.
They wanted dads to help out with
car rider duty, they wanted dads
in the library, they wanted dads in
the classrooms helping out with
special projects, and they wanted
dads in the lunchrooms and in
playgrounds.
A typical day in the life of
Watch D.O.G.S. starts at 7:30 by
checking in with the office and
receiving a T-shirt. Then they report outside to help out with the
students getting dropped off by
cars to greet the moms, along with
students, to let them know that
there is Watch D.O.G.S. on campus. At 8:30, when announcements are made, the dad is introduced to the school along with
who his student is. During the day
dads will get to spend at least an
hour in their child’s classroom.
Dads will also be able to eat lunch
with their child. When dads are
not in the cafeteria they will be in
another classroom or helping
other staff members with needs
of the day. Some of those needs
can include an extra set of eyes
on the playground, help in the library, serving food in the cafeteria, or wherever the need may be.
At the end of the day Watch
D.O.G.S. end it the way it began,
by helping the students back into
their cars. Typically the day ends
about 3:30 if a dad wants to give a
full day.
“What your day does for you
is going to be phenomenal, but
what you guys are going to do
for this school as an organization,
as a group of men, it’s going to be
transformational. We’re not looking to make improvements. What
we’re looking for is to be engaged
and to be involved,” said Snow.
Watch D.O.G.S. don’t need to
give a full day to participate. Any
amount of time that someone can
give is accepted. Participants
don’t have to be dads. They can
be granddads, uncles, or any positive role model from the community. Before participating in the
program each individual has to
scan their license in the office
where they will be checked for
crimes and through the state sex
offender registry. Watch D.O.G.S.
are never left alone with children.
“What the men have to do, and
have to do with the kids and what
they’ve done with the kids is not
better than what the women do,
and the moms do, and what the
teachers do. It’s not better, it’s just
different. It’s unique and in education it is missing. You’re needed
here, you’re wanted here,” said
Snow.
In 2000 the program was designated as a non-profit organization
that Lee went to work for full-time.
In 2006 the program merged with
the National Center for Fathering.
In 2008 they were approached by
the National PTA to form a partnership. 2,649 schools in 42 states
have all implemented the program.
There are another 350 school in
the process of implementing the
program by the end of the year.
For men over the age of 18 that
want to participate in the school
there are several ways to sign up.
One is to go in person and sign
up in the office of a school that is
participating in the program. Men
can also call in to the school and
register for the program. Participants can also go to volunteer
.com and register online.

Travel with Terry ...
City of Iron
By Terry M. Thacker
Driving in the Atlanta area is
always fun. Add rain into the mix
and the experience is just exhilarating.
I jest, of course. However, since
the first destination of my fourday trip this past August was Birmingham, Alabama, I had little
choice but to drive I-85 to Atlanta,
hit the beltway and then connect
to I-20 heading west.
The rain actually wasn't too bad
until I hit that long stretch of I-20.
By that point there were so many
felines and canines falling from
the sky that I came this close to
pulling over onto the shoulder.
Alas, the cats and dogs, in time,
became mere kittens and puppies
and so I kept on trucking.
Upon crossing into Alabama I
stopped in at the welcome center
to update my map and brochure
collection, as well as to see what
the forecast was like for Birmingham. As I walked toward the door
I noticed a stone marker near the
entrance that read, “ALABAMA
– WE DARE DEFEND OUR
RIGHTS.”
The weather screen at the Welcome Center showed a good bit
more rain to come, but with some
breaks in the action. Most of my
sight-seeing for the day was going to be on the outside, so I was
hoping that the breaks would
come at the right time.
I gassed up at Anniston, a town
I visited on a previous trip four
years earlier. There are two museums worth visiting if you ever find
yourself in the area – the Anniston
Museum of Natural History and
the Berman Museum of World
History, both of which I wrote
about in these pages. Concerning the natural history museum, if
you are willing to put up with the
numerous erroneous references
to millions of years and just simply ignore them, you would find
the place quite enjoyable.
By the time I reached Birmingham the rain had pretty much
stopped for the day, although the
sky remained cloudy to partlycloudy. My first stop was the
Sloss Furnaces National Historic
Landmark, which is located smack
dab in the industrial part of town.
A railroad track, still in use, passes
right by the place. In fact, while I
was there, a train came chugging
along and, just like a kid, I had to
stop my touring for a moment and
watch as it passed by.
After parking underneath a
highway overpass I walked into
the small visitor center, picked up
a brochure and set out on my own

The Sloss Furnace, which was
named after its founder, James
Withers Sloss, began operation in
1882, just 11 years after the founding of Birmingham, and remained
in operation for nearly 100 years,
finally closing in 1971.
Birmingham, which was purposefully named after its industrial counterpart in England, was
founded with the goal of establishing industry in the area. The
region was rich in the natural resources necessary for the production of iron and steel. The city,
which grew at a rapid pace, became known for its iron and steelmaking, as well the manufacture
of rails and railroad cars. The Sloss
ironworks played a big part in the
rise of Birmingham as a railroad
hub of the southeast, as well as

est city.
Although no iron has been produced at Sloss for 40 years, that
doesn't mean that there is no activity there at all. Classes are offered in creative welding, cast iron
sculpture and iron and bronze
casting. Commercial artists are allowed the use of the facility to
produce their iron art works.
As I left the Sloss facility I had
to drive ever so slowly over some
very bumpy railroad tracks. I then
proceeded for just a mile or two to
my next destination, the 56-foot
tall, 50-ton statue of Vulcan, which,
to be honest, doesn't look a thing
like Mr. Spock. Okay, it is not that
Vulcan. Rather, it is a statue of
Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.
To get there I had to drive up a
fairly steep road to the top of Red
Mountain. I parked and walked
over to the admission booth,
where I asked if they give an AAA
discount. The man answered in
the affirmative. It always pays to
ask, even when such information
is not posted.
I walked uphill aways on the
sidewalk until I finally reached the
statue itself. Actually, I had
reached only the base of the 124foot tower on which the actual
statue stands. And, to be more
accurate, there are two towers, the
older one containing a staircase
and a newer one sporting an elevator.
I had my choice as to which way
I would ascend, by foot or courtesy of Mr. Otis. I must say that I
was quite pleased with myself
that I wasn't the slightest bit tuckered out after climbing those several stories to the walkway that
girds the tower near the base of
the statue. This is the closest that
one can get to the statue itself. If
you are squeamish about heights,
don't look down. Oh, and thanks
for the lift, Mr. Otis.
From the walkway I had a tremendous view of the city of Birmingham as well as several miles
into the distance in many directions. In the parking lot below,
way below, I could see my automobile. . . or was that a Matchbox
car? It was hard to tell being so
far up.
After replanting my feet on terra
firma I toured the accompanying
museum, which relates the story
of iron-making in Birmingham. It
also tells the story of the creation
of the Vulcan statue, which is the
largest cast-iron statue in the
world. It was created at the turn
of the last century in Birmingham
to represent the city as an iron
and steelmaking center. It was displayed at the 1904 World's Fair in
St. Louis, where it won first prize
at the Palace of Mines and Metallurgy.

The Liberal’s Dictionary
A continuation of a plain and honest
compilation of what a liberal really
means when he uses a word or a phrase
By Walter McSherry
Intelligence, n. A mental characteristic once erroneously thought to be inherited, it
now being recognized that all persons have exactly the same intelligence, and that the
failure of people in some ethnic groups to do as well as others on tests is clearly the fault
of the biased and bigoted educators who designed the test. It may, however, be acknowledged that Jews are more intelligent than others.
Intent, n. Mindset of a voter in the state of Florida. Can be determined only by the
learned justices of the Florida Supreme Court, who alone can discern that a voter has the
intent to vote for a Democrat candidate when he (a) marks his ballot for two candidates
for the same office; (b) punches a voting card leaving one, two, or three hanging chads,
(c) leaves the ballot blank, or (d) votes for a Republican candidate.
Intern, n. Young and gullible person who serves as cheap labor and sex object for
Democrat officeholders. Normally female, but, for some Democrat officeholders, may
be of either sex.
Interpretation, n. Clever means by which a liberal jurist chooses words to mean
whatever he wants them to mean, even if that is the opposite of what a statute intended.
Excellent labor-saving device, the liberal jurist being relieved of the burden of knowing
what the law is, since he makes it up as he goes along.
Interstate Commerce Clause, n. Clause of the U. S. Constitution giving Congress
the power to regulate interstate commerce, used to justify any power grab, anywhere,
anytime, federal courts having held that one is engaged in interstate commerce when he
(a) grows peanuts on his farm to feed his livestock, the peanuts never leaving the farm;
(b) operates an elevator in the Empire State Building; (c) walks within 100 yards of a
school possessing a gun; (d) chooses not to buy medical insurance because he doesn't
need it. Use of this clause is irrefutable evidence in support of the view that federal
judges and officials may cheerfully ignore facts and common sense when it comes to the
extension of federal power. Clause may be used to justify any imposition of fines, confiscations, or imprisonment of any citizen for any reason.

Mayor McCall attributes the
Swamp Rabbit Trail to bringing in
a huge economic growth to this
city. He states, “The property
value of the businesses along the
trail has soared way high.
Twenty-one new businesses are
in the area because of the trail,”
states Mayor McCall.
New homes are currently under
construction in Travelers Rest city
and on the outer city limits-Hawk
Point, Popular Forest in Watson
Crossing and a few more. These
new homes will bring in an additional 100 families to this city.
The city of Travelers Rest is
also helping others around them.
The Travelers Rest Fire Department is providing fire assistance
to the students and staff at
Furman University as a way of
giving back to the community.
Mayor McCall wants to give
back to the citizens of his city in
facilitating to bring in new business to this area to aide in excel-
ling economic growth to make
these businesses competitive to
the other cities in the Upstate of
South Carolina.
Mayor McCall describes his
honorable job in this way, “Your

you have left behind.”
This humble business man
whose family has lived here for
over 300 years is doing just that
… leaving behind a legacy and a
footprint just like his forefathers
did before him ... a man on a mission for this breathtaking region

The sidewalks were packed with people.
Intimidation, n. Inexpensive method of getting businessmen and governmental bodies
to cave in to liberal demands, the mere threat of lawsuits, boycotts, or demonstrations
being sufficient to get them to knuckle under. If intimidation fails, buying off the opposition may be necessary.
Invention, n. Ingenious innovation which improves the quality of life, as Thomas Edison's
invention of the electric light, Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone, and Al
Gore's invention of the Internet.
Investment, n. Catchword for an earmark or payoff to a political constituency, designed to con the gullible into believing that somehow there will be a return of the government money someday.
Islam, n. Religion of the Middle East, its name meaning Submission to Allah, who
commands his followers to seize American hostages, impose oil embargoes, invade Kuwait, destroy the World Trade Center, blow up Times Square, etc.
Isolationist, n. Misguided person who believes that American money and American
soldiers should be used to support the mean-spirited and selfish interests of the United
States, instead of the noble, worthy, and benevolent interests of the United Nations, Britain, and Israel.

SCV Camp 40 Holds Second
Annual Lee-Jackson Dinner
Kinetic Response, n. Term misapplied to justify the use of military force by leaders of
one nation against another nation, without provocation or constitutional approval, in the
hope that the public will not know what the term really means, as the leaders of the
aggressing nation do not know what it means either.
Ku Klux Klan, n. Secret organization formed originally to opppose Reconstruction in
the South. A new organization formed in the early 1900's as an anti-Catholic group.
Believed by liberals to be large and influential, when it is actually small and insignificant.
Believed by liberals to be anti-black, when, at the height of its power, it was anti-Catholic.
Believed by liberals to be associated with the Republican Party, which has never been the
case, the Klan having been associated with the Democratic Party almost exclusively,
being especially strong in that party in the 1920's.
2. Openly bigoted, currently anti-black/Negro/African-American organization, any association with which disqualifies a candidate for public office or appointment to a government position; unless the person is a Democrat,. in which case he is entitled to become a
United Sates Senator and third in line for the Presidency of the United States.
Labor Union, n. Beneficent organization of workingmen dedicated to improving the
welfare and economic status of its members. Especially beneficent in improving the
welfare and economic status of its President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
2. Sacrosanct organization of oppressed workers, given the legal power to establish a
complete monopoly in an industry, to shut down the entire industry at its will, and to
establish uniform work rules, benefits, and wage levels throughout the entire industry, to
the end of eliminating competition between companies, and forcing the public to pay for
the industry's products at a price effectively determined by the union; the consequence
being that the unionized companies eventually go out of business or into bankruptcy, as
airlines, railways, automobile manufacturers, etc. Currently engaged in seeing to it that
state and municipal governments also go bankrupt, with the goal of eventually causing the
federal government to do likewise.

Camp 40 L-J Dinner.
By Jennifer Sawyer
The Brigadier General Samuel
McGowan Camp 40 held its annual Lee-Jackson Dinner on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the camp
headquarters building in Laurens,
SC. The camp brought in catered
food from the Hub in Laurens
which was served by the Order of
Confederate Rose. After the meal,
camp members and guests were
treated to a wonderful program by
special guest Pastor John Weaver.
Pastor Weaver is the Past Chaplain -in -Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He is a native
of Georgia and a graduate of Bob
Jones University with a BA in
Theology. Pastor Weaver has
pastored over forty years and has
spoken at numerous colleges,
churches, and special events
across the nation. He is the author of many sermons on the role
of Christianity in the founding of
our nation and specifically the role
of Christianity in the South. He is
the founder of Freedom Baptist
Ministries and preaches on Sundays in Waycross, Georgia. He
and his wife Alice live in Live Oak,
Florida.
Pastor Weaver’s presentation
on Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall”
Jackson was inspiring, uplifting,
and very thought provoking.
Jackson was a man of principles,
which Pastor Weaver frequently
pointed out is lacking today in our
nation’s leaders. He did not operate on feelings or emotions but
on principles regardless of how
they affected him personally. Jackson was well-known in the VMI
classroom and on the battlefield
for his strict adherence to discipline and principle. This adherence made him unequaled on the
battlefield and he became a highly
respected general on both sides
of the War Between the States.
Pastor Weaver gave several vivid
examples of Jackson’s principles
and drew parallels today. He
stated that America could return
to her greatness when she returned to her principles. A standing ovation by the audience followed the presentation.
Following the program, a special election was held for the new
Camp Commander as other officers had been elected in November. Past Camp 40 Commander
Robert Roper was elected commander to serve for the 2013-2015.
Roper had also served the SC Division SCV as Commander. The
present SC Division Commander
Mark Simpson led the installations of new officers and passed
the Battle Flag to Commander
Roper, officially installing him into
office.
The Laurens Camp is one of the
few camps in the state which
maintains its own headquarters
building. Persons interested in
protecting their Confederate history are invited to visit the
McGowan Camp website and consider visiting the camp. The camp
meets regularly the 2nd Tuesday
of every month at 6:30 PM at the
camp headquarters, corner of
Calhoun and East Farley in
Laurens.
3. Legal monopoly in an industry, usually run by a small group of people who have
established their own monopoly on all offices of the union.
4. Organization which encourages incentives toward hard work, productivity, and individual achievement through payment and promotion strictly on the basis of seniority, opposition to labor-saving mechanization, and near-impossibility of firing the inefficient and
unproductive.
5. Essential organization for protecting the rights of the incompetent and the lazy.
6. Benevolent organization dedicated to the welfare and improvement of working conditions of its members, so much so that 93% of workers engaged in private business do
not think it worth the cost of its dues.
7. Benevolent organization which negotiates higher wages and improved benefits for
employees, the increase in wages and benefits for the average employee being being
almost as must as his required dues.

The Children
Protection Deception
A
n unbelievably large segment of the American population has
been deceived into thinking that no protection is the best protection for children in public schools and on college campuses. These
vulnerable children have become the easiest prey for crazed killers
who want to kill as many people as possible before help arrives in the
form of guns in the hands of police officers.
Many school districts in South Carolina have at least assigned one
uniformed officer to some schools. This is recognition of a need, but
grossly inadequate to deal with the potential threat. The School District of Greenville County is seeking ways of enhancing security.
They clearly have a need for a select few trained and tested armed
school employees, in the schools every day, their identity known
only to the principal and law enforcement officials. The knowledge
that they exist and their identity secret would be a great deterrent to
those who would harm children while on school property and away
from parental protection.
The leftist guidebook followed by the current regime in Washington is exploiting the “perfect crisis” needed for their “gun control”
agenda. The leftists are using children as an excuse to take the first
step in destroying the Second Amendment of the Constitution, the
Amendment that allows citizens to successfully protect themselves
and their property from criminals and tyrannical government. Americans have been free for more than two centuries due to the Second
Amendment that provides protection for the entire bill of rights. The
medicated, crazed killer, who killed his mother and took her unsecured
guns to a gun-free school where innocent children and adult women
were defenseless when confronted by any determined killer using
any weapon from a crowbar to a gun. The killer was not stupid. His
target was carefully chosen and his attack well executed.
For twenty minutes this video game addict and alleged worshiper
of Satan had no opposition except the bare hands of teachers and
administrators as he methodically snuffed the life from trapped first
graders who had been left vulnerable by a well-meaning government
school system. The people responsible for the protection of these
children had the insane idea that the best defense against a crazed
killer is to prohibit anyone on school grounds from possessing a
defensive weapon with which to defend the children.
A careful review of President Obama’s announced 23 executive
actions and calls for legislation reveals that none would have prevented or even deterred the massacre at the Connecticut elementary
school. It appears to be a leftist list of government actions to harass
and “punish” law-abiding gun owners.
Last week Rush Limbaugh suggested that Obama is practicing “revenge” and pushing people to “snap.” People are becoming very
discouraged and very angry. Some observers believe that the regime
in Washington want a “law-abiding” citizen, maybe a combat veteran,
to “snap” and take drastic action giving the regime a reason to ratchet
their gun control (grab) agenda up another notch.
It is important to remember that this is not about protecting children. Children are simply props being used and abused by power
hungry politicians. This is about removing the single defense the
American people have against government tyranny. The leftists who
have taken over the Democrat party must disarm citizens if they are to
perpetuate their fanatical desire for dictatorial rule against the will of
the people.
“All of this is so in our face. Everything that people hold dear is
under assault. Deliberately making people upset. This is not what
Presidents do,” said Limbaugh.
Obama plans to drastically reduce law-abiding Americans’ access
to guns. His executive plan would demand federal access to details of
a transaction every time a father gives or sells a firearm to his son,
daughter, relative or neighbor. This will form the basis for a national
gun registry, Nazi/Commie style.
Who are the people for whom Obama seeks punishment and revenge? Limbaugh speculates that they are the people Obama referenced in a speech to Democrat “fat cats” in California, when he didn’t
know he was being recorded. They are the ones from small towns and
rural areas who “cling to their guns and their Bibles.”
Depending on future events, the Obama gun agenda could be the
greatest threat to the Constitution that many Americans are sworn to
protect and defend, since the founding of the republic.

Keep the Invocation at School Board Meetings
Dear Editor,
I attend most every Pickens
County Council meeting, and they
start their meeting with an invocation. The US Supreme Court has
ruled it is perfectly legal. Just like
it is legal for the US Congress, the
state legislatures and all county
councils in the country to start
their meeting with an invocation.
I see no reason why it would be
illegal for the school board. There
is little difference between what
the County Council does in its
meetings and what the school
board does in theirs – both bring
up issues of public concern, debate them and vote on them.
A school board meeting is not
a classroom full of students where
such prayers have been found to
be illegal. The school board is a
deliberative body, like the county
council, city council, state legislature and US Congress where the
Supreme Court found those
prayers to be legal.
That is the school board’s legal
defense. School board members
are elected by and work for the
people and they vote to spend our
money. The board works for the
people and the people want the
board to defend the opening innovation at their meetings and we
don’t mind the board spending
our tax money to do it.
The purpose of the invocation
is not to establish a religion in this

Admittedly at this juncture, inadequate and lacking a clearly de-

The Best Way To Stop A Bad Guy With A
Gun Is A Good Guy With A Gun
Dear Editor,
During my 26 years as a police
officer for the city of Greenville, I
never considered the average citizen and his guns (military sty1e
or otherwise) a threat to my safety.
Thegreatest risk to police and the
public is a changing demographic
that reflects loss of traditional
norms and standards, and a dysfunctional judiciary, including our
U.S. Supreme Court that has made
consistent, timely applications of
the death penalty impossible.
When news of the horrific
slaughter at Newtown, CT,
reached anti-gun politicians (who
spend most of their time under the
protection of armed security) and
the liberal media, they began their
usual “blame the gun” propaganda. Never mind that such maniacal carnage could have been
created with a baseball bat. The
truth about guns and crime does
not fit their agenda for making all
firearms in the hands of the public as contraband as cocaine.
Thus they ignore hundreds of
“saves” that occur each year due
to lawful acts of citizens using
guns to defend themselves and
others, most often without discharging their weapons.
Equally immaterial to these bureaucrats is the fact that tens of
millions of semi-automatic, highcapacity, military-looking rifles
(erroneously labeled “assault
rifles” by these types and the
media) are in the hands of citizens,
yet only a minuscule fraction of
one percent have been used in
criminal acts. Nevertheless they
are crusading for laws that will ban
the lot, knowing such laws affect
only the law-abiding—not psychopaths and sociopaths that use
them to kill.
I have been a member of the National Rifle Association for 35
years and am about to renew
my membership. I firmly agree with
Wayne Lapierre, the organization’s
Executive Vice President: The best

Do Gun Control Laws
Control Guns?
Are Guns the Problem?
MINORITY VIEW
Walter
Williams
W
hen I attended primary
and secondary school -during the 1940s and '50s -- one
didn't hear of the kind of shooting mayhem that's become routine
today. Why? It surely wasn't because of strict firearm laws. My
replica of the 1902 Sears mail-order catalog shows 35 pages of firearm advertisements. People just
sent in their money, and a firearm
was shipped.
Dr. John Lott, author of "More
Guns, Less Crime," reports that
until the 1960s, some New York
City public high schools had
shooting clubs where students
competed in citywide shooting
contests for university scholarships. They carried their rifles to
school on the subways and, upon
arrival, turned them over to their
homeroom teacher or the gym
coach and retrieved their rifles after school for target practice.
Virginia's rural areas had a long
tradition of high-school students
going hunting in the morning before school and sometimes storing their rifles in the trunks of their
cars that were parked on school
grounds. Often a youngster's 12th
or 14th birthday present was a
shiny new .22-caliber rifle, given
to him by his father.
Today's level of civility can't
match yesteryear's. Many of
today's youngsters begin the
school day passing through metal
detectors. Guards patrol school
hallways, and police cars patrol
outside. Despite these measures,
assaults, knifings and shootings
occur. According to the National
Center for Education Statistics, in
2010 there were 828,000 nonfatal
criminal incidents in schools.
There were 470,000 thefts and
359,000 violent attacks, of which
91,400 were serious. In the same
year, 145,100 public-school teachers were physically attacked, and
276,700 were threatened.
What explains today's behavior versus yesteryear's? For well
over a half-century, the nation's
liberals and progressives -- along
with the education establishment,
pseudo-intellectuals and the
courts -- have waged war on traditions, customs and moral values. These people taught their
vision, that there are no moral absolutes, to our young people. To
them, what's moral or immoral is a
matter of convenience, personal
opinion or a consensus.
During the '50s and '60s,
the education establishment
launched its agenda to undermine
lessons children learned from
their parents and the church with
fads such as "values clarification." So-called sex education
classes are simply indoctrination
that sought to undermine family
and church strictures against premarital sex. Lessons of abstinence
were ridiculed and considered
passe and replaced with lessons
about condoms, birth control pills
and abortions. Further undermining of parental authority came
with legal and extralegal measures
to assist teenage abortions with
neither parental knowledge nor
consent.
Customs, traditions, moral values and rules of etiquette, not
laws and government regulations,
are what make for a civilized society. These behavioral norms -transmitted by example, word of
mouth and religious teachings -represent a body of wisdom distilled through ages of experience,
trial and error, and looking at what
works. The importance of customs, traditions and moral values
as a means of regulating behavior
is that people behave themselves
even if nobody's watching. Police
and laws can never replace these
restraints on personal conduct so
as to produce a civilized society.
At best, the police and criminal
justice system are the last desperate line of defense for a civilized
society. The more uncivilized we
become the more laws that are
needed to regulate behavior.
Many customs, traditions and
moral values have been discarded
without an appreciation for the
role they played in creating a civilized society, and now we're paying the price. What's worse is that
instead of a return to what worked,
people want to replace what
worked with what sounds good,
such as zero-tolerance policies in
which bringing a water pistol,
drawing a picture of a pistol, or
pointing a finger and shouting
"bang-bang" produces a school
suspension or arrest. Seeing as
we've decided that we should rely
on gun laws to control behavior,
what should be done to regulate
clubs and hammers? After all, FBI
crime statistics show that more
people are murdered by clubs and
hammers than rifles and shotguns.

he gun control controversy
is only the latest of many issues to be debated almost solely
in terms of fixed preconceptions,
with little or no examination of hard
facts.
Media discussions of gun control are dominated by two factors:
the National Rifle Association and
the Second Amendment. But the
over-riding factual question is
whether gun control laws actually
reduce gun crimes in general or
murder rates in particular.
If, as gun control advocates
claim, gun control laws really do
control guns and save lives, there
is nothing to prevent repealing the
Second Amendment, any more
than there was anything to prevent repealing the Eighteenth
Amendment that created Prohibition.
But, if the hard facts show that
gun control laws do not actually
control guns, but instead lead to
more armed robberies and higher
murder rates after law-abiding citizens are disarmed, then gun control laws would be a bad idea, even
if there were no Second Amendment and no National Rifle Association.
The central issue boils down to
the question: What are the facts?
Yet there are many zealots who
seem utterly unconcerned about
facts or about their own lack of
knowledge of facts.
There are people who have
never fired a shot in their life who
do not hesitate to declare how
many bullets should be the limit
to put into a firearm's clip or magazine. Some say ten bullets but New
York state's recent gun control law
specifies seven.

artial arts movie legend
Jackie Chan deserves a
rhetorical roundhouse kick to the
mouth. So does his pal PSY, the
Korean rapper whose "Gangnam
Style" music video has racked up
more than a billion views worldwide. Both men have raked in big
bucks from Western fans while
trashing the very freedoms and
cultures that made them superstars.
Last week, The Washington
Post spotlighted a recent interview Chan did with Chinese TV in
which he accused America of being "the most corrupt country in
the world." The Hong Kong-born
Chan also admitted proudly that
he is a propagandist for the Communist Chinese government. He
openly advised his fellow countrymen to speak with forked
tongues when addressing foreign
press: "We know our country has
many problems. We (can) talk
about it when the door is closed.
To outsiders, (we should say) "our
country is the best."
Translation: Rampant sex-selection abortions? Shhh. Jailing po-
litical dissidents? La, la, la, can't
hear you! Systemic religious persecution? State-sanctioned censorship? Continued brutality
against Tiananmen Square protesters and Tibetans? Nothing to
see here, move along, and down
with America!
Turns out that behind the jovial cinematic persona, Chan is an
unrepentant champion of authoritarian rule. Despite making a living as an entertainer and "humanitarian," Chan suffers a severe
allergic reaction to freedom of
speech and freedom of thought.
In a separate interview last month
with China's Southern People
Weekly, he complained that Hong
Kong had become a city of too
many protests. "There should be
regulations on what can and cannot be protested," Chan declared.
Earlier in 2009, Chan echoed
Chinese Communist leaders in
asserting that Chinese people
"need to be controlled" because
"if we are not being controlled,
we'll just do what we want." God
forbid!
This contempt for freedom of
expression comes from an international box-office mogul who has
topped the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list and has an estimated
net worth of more than $130 million. Even more damning, Chan's
own personal history is defined by
the turmoil of Mao's Cultural Revolution. As the 2003 documentary
"Traces of a Dragon" recounted,
Chan's father and mother both fled
China for Hong Kong to escape
Communist rule. They left behind
their original spouses and four
children between them.
Instead of condemning the regime that wrought havoc on his
family and imposed suffering and
death on millions of innocents,
Chan is China's most prominent
mainstream apologist. Meanwhile,
moviegoers in the "most corrupt
country in the world" continue to
help make Chan a wealthy man.
This summer, his latest movie,
"Chinese Zodiac," will hit U.S.
theaters. Sylvester Stallone has
invited him to co-star in the next
installment of "The Expendables."
And Chan is working on another
Hollywood project involving his
popular "Police Story" series.
Will American consumers allow
themselves to be punched in the
gut by this trash-talking action
star? If the embrace of Chan's new
pal PSY is any indication, the answer is yes. The Korean
"Gangnam Style" performer once
urged listeners to "kill those

Virtually all gun control advocates say that 30 bullets in a magazine is far too many for self-defense or hunting -- even if they
have never gone hunting and
never had to defend themselves
with a gun. This uninformed and
self-righteous dogmatism is what
makes the gun control debate so
futile and so polarizing.
Anyone who faces three home
invaders, jeopardizing himself or
his family, might find 30 bullets
barely adequate. After all, not every bullet hits, even at close range,
and not every hit incapacitates.
You can get killed by a wounded
man.
These plain life-and-death realities have been ignored for years
by people who go ballistic when
they hear about how many shots
were fired by the police in some
encounter with a criminal. As
someone who once taught pistol
shooting in the Marine Corps, I
am not the least bit surprised by
the number of shots fired. I have
seen people miss a stationary target at close range, even in the
safety and calm of a pistol range.
We cannot expect everybody
to know that. But we can expect
them to know that they don't know
-- and to stop spouting off about
life-and-death issues when they
don't have the facts.
The central question as to
whether gun control laws save
lives or cost lives has generated
many factual studies over the
years. But these studies have
been like the proverbial tree that
falls in an empty forest, and has
been heard by no one -- certainly
not by zealots who have made up
their minds and don't want to be
confused by the facts.
Most factual studies show no
reduction in gun crimes, including murder, under gun control
laws. A significant number of stud-
ies show higher rates of murder
and other gun crimes under gun
control laws.
How can this be? It seems obvious to some gun control zealots that, if no one had guns, there
would be fewer armed robberies
and fewer people shot to death.
But nothing is easier than to
disarm peaceful, law-abiding
people. And nothing is harder
than to disarm people who are
neither -- especially in a country
with hundreds of millions of guns
already out there, that are not going to rust away for centuries.
When it was legal to buy a shotgun in London in the middle of
the 20th century, there were very
few armed robberies there. But,
after British gun control zealots
managed over the years to disarm
virtually the entire law-abiding
population, armed robberies became literally a hundred times more
common. And murder rates rose.
One can cherry-pick the factual
studies, or cite some studies that
have subsequently been discredited, but the great bulk of the studies show that gun control laws do
not in fact control guns. On net
balance, they do not save lives
but cost lives.
Gun control laws allow some
people to vent their emotions,
politicians to grandstand and selfrighteous people to "make a statement" -- but all at the cost of other
people's lives.

Clouds Over Obama's
Second Term
OPINION COLUMN
Pat
Buchanan
R
arely have second terms
lived up to the hopes and
expectations of presidents or their
electorates.
FDR's began with an attempt to
pack the Supreme Court by adding new justices and a second
Depression of 1937. He was rescued only by the war in Europe in
1939 and the GOP's nomination of
"the barefoot boy from Wall
Street," Wendell Willkie.
What can be called Harry
Truman's second term was a disaster.
In 1949, the Soviets exploded
an atom bomb and China fell to
Mao. In 1950, the Rosenbergs
were convicted as atomic spies for
Stalin and North Korea invaded
the South, igniting a three-year
war Truman could not win or end.
He lost the New Hampshire primary in 1952 to Sen. Estes
Kefauver, dropped out and saw
would-be successor Adlai
Stevenson crushed by Gen.
Dwight Eisenhower, as Republicans captured Congress. Truman
left with the lowest approval rating of a president before or since.
In his second term, Ike did better, but suffered a GOP defeat in
1958, saw Fidel Castro seize Cuba
in January of 1959, and had the U2 shot down by Russia in May
1960 and his Paris summit blown
up by Nikita Khrushchev, who
berated Ike to his face. His vice
president, Richard Nixon, then lost
the White House.
The Kennedy-Johnson second
term began spectacularly, with
passage of all the Great Society
legislation. But, in 1966, LBJ's
party suffered huge losses. In
1968, that year of assassinations
of Martin Luther King Jr. and
Robert Kennedy, of race riots in a
hundred cities, and of campus
anarchy, antiwar protests and an
endless war in Vietnam, LBJ was
challenged in the primaries, quit
the race, and saw Nixon succeed
him.
After his own 49-state re-election victory, Nixon did not survive
his second term. Jimmy Carter did
not get a second term.
Ronald Reagan comes close to
being the exception.
While he lost 10 Senate seats
in 1986, he cut income tax rates
from 50 to 28 percent, and his
summiteering with Mikhail
Gorbachev is seen as a historic
success, leading to America's victory in the Cold War.
The Iran-Contra scandal -- trading of arms to Iran for hostages in
Lebanon -- almost broke his presidency. But by the time Reagan left
in 1989, his popularity had been
restored, the Cold War was ending, and his vice president was
taking the oath of office to succeed him.
George H.W. Bush was denied
a second term. And the main event
of Bill Clinton's was his impeachment and Senate trial for the
Monica Lewinsky affair.
In his second term, George W.
Bush lost his battle for Social Security reform and lost both houses
of Congress in 2006, ending his
presidency with America mired in
two unwinnable wars and plunging into a near-depression.
By January 2009, Bush's approval rating was approaching the
Truman low, and his party had lost
the White House.
About Obama's second term it
is hard to be sanguine.
The hopeful news is that, after
four years, the U.S. economy appears to be recovering. Progress
is slow, but we seem to be out of
intensive care and walking the
hospital halls.

Obama’s Giveaway to the
Communists
SCHLAFLY REPORT
Phyllis
Schlafly
T
he China problem is not just
that China is raking in trillions of dollars because of
Obama’s spending and borrowing
binges, and it’s not just that government policies encourage wellpaying U.S. manufacturing jobs
to move overseas. An even bigger problem is that the Obama Administration is about to give Communist China some of our most
precious and up-to-date military
technology.
This particular chicanery
started when the Obama Administration foolishly tried to use taxpayers’ money to force green energy to replace fossil fuels. But
green energy can’t compete in the
free market because it’s so much
more expensive to produce.
Obama gave a half-billion U.S.
tax dollars to Solyndra to subsidize making solar panels, yet the
company promptly went bankrupt. Then Obama awarded a grant
of $250 million of Stimulus money
to a firm called A123 to make batteries for electric cars, which also
went bankrupt and now is trying
to pay off its investors by auctioning the company.
The high bidder at $256 million
in a December auction was the
Wanxiang Group, which has close
ties to Communist China’s government. Its chief executive is one
of the wealthiest men in China, a
prominent figure in the Chinese
Communist Party.
This sale is dangerous to U.S.
security because it involves the
transfer of advanced battery technology using lithium iron phosphate, which produces longer-life,
lighter-weight, higher-power and
more stable batteries that can operate in both very low and very
high temperatures. In China’s
hands, the new A123 technology
will threaten U.S. electrical power
and communications grids.
China is eager for this acquisition because of its potential use
in space weapons, anti-satellite
missiles, lasers, and counterspace
systems. Retired navy Vice Admiral Barry Costello, former commander of the Navy’s Third Fleet,
says the sale of A123 will give a
big boost to China’s military expansion and warfare capability in
space, cyber warfare, and unmanned vehicles, all of which rely
on battery power.
One option considered is to sell
only the commercial technology
to Wanxiang and sell its U.S. defense contracts to a U.S. firm,
Navitas Systems. But pretending
that A123's advanced technology
can be sold to China only for business purposes is a pipe dream.
A123 employs more than 100
scientists and engineers working
on sensitive materials that are part
of what is scheduled to be sold to
Wanxiang. If China gets access
to A123's commercial applications, it will be easy for China to
reverse-engineer the military applications.
If Wanxiang owns A123's intellectual property and highly skilled
technicians, that means controlling today’s battery technology
plus a ten-year leap in development. Senators John Thune (RSD) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA)
warn that the deal could give
Wanxiang “access to these defense contracts and technology
used by multiple branches of the
U.S. military.”
This giant and valuable gift
would give Communist China cutting-edge military-grade technology and control of the future supply chain. China would be able to
use all this technology to continue its rapid buildup of a military to achieve dominance in the
Pacific.
The U.S. military has made a big
investment in A123's technology,
which the Army’s chief of technology acquisition has called the
“technology of the decade.” To
develop it, the Air Force spent $4
million, the Navy spent $700,000,
and the Army spent $21.8 million.
This technology is critical to
many U.S. military operations, proprietary applications for underwater vehicles, shipboard advanced
systems, unmanned ground and
air systems, and portable power
in satellites, combat vehicles, and
precision munitions. It is valuable
to support soldiers in unfriendly
ground conditions and excessive
heat, and can lighten their heavy

ho said this about a world
leader: He's a "political
coward -- an essentially unchallenged leader who nevertheless is
unwilling to lead or spend political
capital to advance the cause of compromise"? Was it perhaps John
Boehner describing Barack Obama?
No, though the shoe would certainly fit. It was Barack Obama describing Binyamin Netanyahu.
This insight into Obama's views
comes from an interview with the
Atlantic Magazine's Jeffrey
Goldberg. Let's pause for second
to consider the gall. Mr. Obama
knows full well that the United States
confronts an unavoidable debt crisis if our government does not reform entitlements. Rather than lead,
Obama has peddled denial ("We
don't have a spending problem"),
distortion (suggesting that Republicans who want spending cuts in
exchange for raising the debt ceiling are "not paying America's bills")
and demonization of the rich.
What wouldn't Netanyahu give
for such manageable problems?
The prime minister of Israel is
confronted by deadly threats in all
directions. Iran, whose leaders routinely threaten to destroy the Jewish state (the "moderate" Hashemi
Rafsanjani noted that "one bomb"
would destroy all of Israel so "it is
not irrational to contemplate such
an eventuality"), is marching, seemingly inexorably with Obama's re-
election, toward a nuclear weapon.
Syria is in flames, with the outcome uncertain. Lebanon is controlled by Hezbollah. Iraq's future
stability is in doubt with the total
withdrawal of U.S. forces.
Egypt, whose three-decade
peace treaty with Israel offered a
certain tenuous security to the Jewish state, is now in the hands of the
Muslim Brotherhood. And while
Obama's Director of National Intelligence James Clapper described the
Brotherhood in 2011 as "largely
secular," the true nature of the regime is dawning on even the most
obtuse. There was Mohammed
Morsi's power grab in late November, when he attempted to grant himself sweeping authority. There is the
persecution of Christians at the
hands of the Muslim Brotherhood
(sometimes including crucifixion).
And there is the 2010 video that
surfaced recently of Morsi himself
describing Israelis as bloodsuckers,
warmongers and "the descendants
of apes and pigs."
According to Goldberg, Obama
has said repeatedly, "Israel doesn't
know what its best interests are."
With each new settlement announcement, Obama believes,
"Netanyahu is moving his country
down a path toward near-total isolation."
Obama is revealing his ignorance
and arrogance. The question of
settlements has not prevented the
Palestinians from negotiating in the
past. The PA decided to make halting settlements a condition of negotiation after Obama himself in-
sisted upon it. They could hardly
do less. By big-footing it, Obama
impeded the cause of negotiations.
Israel has built most settlements
in regions quite close to the 1967
borders that everyone believes
would be incorporated into Israel
anyway. As the Washington Post
noted in an editorial implicitly critical of Obama, "80 percent of [Israeli
settlers] could be included in Israel
if the country annexed just more
than 4 percent of the West Bank -less than the 5 percent proposed
by President Bill Clinton 12 years
ago." Obama himself has predicted
that there would be "land swaps"
as part of any final agreement. Besides, why is it considered out of
the question that some Jewish
settlements would remain in a future Palestinian state? There are
more than a million Israeli Arabs living throughout the Jewish state.
Has Mr. Obama not considered
that Israel has dismantled settlements in the Sinai and Gaza? The
Gaza withdrawal brought not peace
but unrelenting missile fire. The jury
is out on the Sinai withdrawal.
Like his colleagues on the left,
and like his nominee for Defense
Secretary, Obama believes that
Israel's vulnerability is her own
fault. He utterly misconceives the
entire conflict, which is not about
"two states for two peoples" (which
Israel has repeatedly endorsed and
sacrificed for) but about the stubborn Palestinian rejection of Israel's
existence. Evidence for this is so
abundant -- from official PA maps
that show no Israel, to Palestinian

thousands of reader responses.
And while the vast majority of
these responses expressed complete agreement, there were several responses from professing
Christians telling me that I was in
violation of Holy Scripture for
making such a stand.
As one might expect, some of
my brethren argued the erroneous
“obey-the-government-no-matter-what” interpretation of Romans 13. For the sake of the many
new readers of this column, let me
point out that my son, constitutional Christian attorney Timothy
Baldwin, and I have co-written a
pivotal book dealing with this fallacious interpretation of Romans
13 in a book entitled “Romans 13:
The True Meaning of Submission.” This book takes the entire
Word of God to show that nowhere does the Bible teach (including in Romans 13) that Christians should submit to unlawful
government. In fact, just the opposite is taught: Christians often
have a duty to RESIST unlawful
government.

But perhaps the verse of Scripture that my slightly confused
brethren quoted most in their attempt to rebuke me was Matthew
26:52, “Then said Jesus unto him
[Simon Peter], Put up again thy
sword into his place: for all they
that take the sword shall perish
with the sword.” (KJV) This, they
said, proves that Christians have
no right to keep and bear arms if
the government said it was illegal
to do so. However, with all due
respect, this interpretation is opposed to the overwhelming evidence of Scripture to the contrary.
In the first place, consider what
Jesus said just a few moments
before making this statement. Just
before arriving in the Garden of
Gethsemane (where the statement
was made to Peter to “put up thy
sword”), Jesus told his disciples,
“But now, he that hath a purse, let
him take it, and likewise his scrip:
and he that hath no sword, let him
sell his garment, and buy one.”
(Luke 22:36 KJV)
After hearing Jesus’ command,
the disciples replied, “Lord, behold, here are two swords. And
he said unto them, It is enough.”
(Luke 22:38 KJV)
Notice that Jesus plainly and
emphatically told Simon Peter and
the others to arm themselves. So
emphatic was Jesus’ command
that He told them if they could
not afford to purchase a sword
they were instructed to sell their
clothes if necessary and buy one.
After hearing Jesus’ command
to arm themselves, the disciples
noted that already two of the disciples were carrying arms. Jesus’
response, “It is enough,” did not
mean that only two swords (out
of eleven men–Judas Iscariot had
already left to betray Christ) was
sufficient, for He had plainly commanded EACH MAN to arm himself. He was simply acknowledging that they clearly understood
what He had just told them.
Ladies and gentlemen, the First
Century Roman sword was the
most efficient and lethal personal
defense weapon in the world at
the time. It is no hyperbole or injustice to language to say that the
Roman sword was the First Century equivalent to a modern AR15 semi-automatic rifle. It was designed to kill swiftly and efficiently. And Jesus commanded
His disciples to buy and carry
one!
Also note that the same word
“sword” that is used in this passage is the same word that is used
in Romans 13:4, “He (government)
beareth not the sword in vain.” In
other words, Jesus told His disciples to carry the same-type
weapon that government soldiers
were carrying at the time.
After this exchange, Jesus and
His disciples walked to the Garden of Gethsemane where the
events of Peter and the sword
took place.
Simon Peter had already told
Jesus that he was willing to die
for him (yes, Jesus rightly predicted his denial, knowing how
Simon would react to the events
that unfolded in the garden), and
when the armed soldiers from the
High Priest (tantamount to the
President’s Secret Service officers today) came to arrest Jesus,
Simon Peter drew his sword in
defense of his Master. He intended to cut off the soldier’s
head, but the man ducked, and
Simon cleanly sliced off his ear.
Notice that Jesus did not rebuke
or chastise Simon. Remember
when He sternly told Simon, “Get
thee behind me, Satan”? No such
rebuke is found here. And notice,
too, that He did not tell Simon to
“GIVE UP thy sword.” He said
“PUT UP again thy sword into his
place,” meaning into its scabbard.
He fully expected Simon to retain
possession of his sword.
It is also noteworthy that as
Jesus was being arrested, the
power of His voice totally overwhelmed the soldiers, which
caused all of them to sway backward and fall to the ground. (John
18:6) This accomplished a couple
of things: it caused every soldier
in that garden to fully understand
that theirs was not the preeminent
power present. It also allowed His
eleven disciples to leave unscathed TAKING THEIR WEAPONS WITH THEM, as the soldiers were either totally distracted
by the surprise of what had just
happened to them, or they were
totally disinterested in attempting
to disarm the disciples after this
incredible demonstration of power
against them.
But as Jesus had come to this
earth to give Himself a ransom for
sinful men, which meant that His
betrayal, arrest, and crucifixion
were all a part of God’s sovereign
plan for His only begotten Son,
Simon’s armed defense of Christ
was not necessary. Jesus calmly
reminded Simon of the legions of
angels that were available for His
defense, should He call on them.
Then Jesus gave Simon the assurance that “all they that take the
sword shall perish with the
sword.”
And despite what you’ve
heard so many preachers say regarding this verse, this was not a
WARNING to Simon Peter; it was
a PROMISE to Simon Peter.

Is Obama Good for Israel?
FOCUS ON ISRAEL
Dr. Al
Snyder
N
ow that Barack Obama has
been re-elected to another
term as president of the United
States, this question is appropriate. Is Obama good for Israel?
According to election exit polls,
about 75 percent of American
Jews voted for Obama. They seem
to believe that Obama is good for
Israel. Most of them are established liberal Democrats, who
would never vote conservative or
Republican. Despite the mountain
of evidence that shows Obama's
hostility toward Israel and toward
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, those American Jews
choose to believe Obama's positive statements on Israel, while
ignoring his negative actions.
However, an Israeli newpaper
stated that if Israelis could have
voted in the U.S. election, they
would have voted at least three
to one against Obama. There is
an overwhelming feeling, the paper added, that Obama is the most
ant-Israeli U.S. president in history.
The report goes on to identify
some highlights of Obama's "naivete" in regard to the Middle East
and his contempt for Israel and
Prime Minister Netanyahu. Two
years ago Obama first met with
Netanyahu at the White House in
Washington. The president's
treatment of the leader of one of
America's closest allies was deplorable and disdainful.
Netanyahu was quietly led into
the White House through a side
door. He was treated more like a
stranger than like an esteemed
friend. There was no media attention and no photo op. However,
when Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas visited the
White House shortly afterward,
he was treated as an honored
guest with photo ops and a smiling president giving him one hundred million dollars.
After Obama was unable to get
Netanyahu to agree to stop new
construction in Jewish settle-
ments, a frustrated president left
the meeting and went to dine with
his family. According to this
source, the president told
Netanyahu, "I'm going upstairs.
Call me when you are ready to talk
substance." Netanyahu and his
entourage were left to cool their
heels in the meeting room.
Then you have to remember
when Obama made good on a campaign promise, which was "to give
a major address to Moslems from
a Moslem capital." His objective
was "to repair ties that were severely damaged under his predecessor George W. Bush." For the
record, we all know that those ties
were "severely damaged" when
19 Middle East Moslem terrorists
turned jet planes into missiles, killing 3,000 Americans. Obama also
stated that "there have been times
when America has shown arrogance." The problem with
Obama's speech was the naivete
of the president to think that Moslem anger toward the U.S. was
because olf George W. Bush or
American arrogance. He obviously fails to understand that the
issue is not American arrogance,
but the Moslem religious fanaticism.
Recently on U.S. television
Obama stated that "Israel is one
of our closest allies in the Middle
East." Isn't Israel America's closest ally in the region, and really
America's only trustworthy ally
there? All the surrounding Arab
countries are Moslem, who consider the U.S. to be the "Great Satan," and their supposedly holy
Koran instructs them to hate and
to kill us. Yet Obama considers
them to be close allies.
Then we can look to Benghazi,
Libya. The insistence for two
weeks by Obama and his team that
the attacks in Libya were not a
planned assault against America,
but that some obscure video on
the internet resulted in "hurt religious feelings of Moslems"
clearly reveals his pro-Moslem
attitude. His initial response was
to want the person who produced
the offensive video to be brought
to justice. Never mind that the
Moslem terrorists murdered our
U.S. ambassador and three other
Americans.
And remember during the G20
summit last year in Paris, when
French President Sarkozy privately said to Obama while he was
not aware that his mike was still
on, "I cannot bear Netanyahu."
And President Obama responded,
"You're fed up with him, but I have
to deal with him even more often
than you do."
Then too, the president several
times has called for Israel to implement a "two-state solution," and
to return to the suicidal borders
of 1967. The reality is that there
actually were no definite borders
in 1967. When Israel declared
statehood in 1948, they were immediately attacked by five Arab
nations. The borders were defined
simply by where everyone was
when the attacking nations cried
“uncle.” There was no peace
treaty and there were no border
agreements. Had the Arabs won
the war, they would have annihilated Israel in its infancy. None of
those nations recognized Israel as
a state or any borders as permanent. Arabs are now occupying
most of the territory of Judea and
Samaria, but Israel still legitimately
owns that war-gained land, and
many Jewish communities (settlements) have now been constructed throughout this so-called
West Bank area.
When Jordan attacked Israel
during the 1967 Six-Day War, Israeli military forces pushed Jordanian forces out of Judea and
Samaria and back across the Jordan River. Why should Israel just
give that land back for nothing
and be left with only a ten-milewide territory along the Mediterranean coast, just because Obama
wants it that way?
When you add it all up, maybe
Obama is the most anti-Israeli U.S.
president in history.

Whether you choose a published

you to study the Bible with
greater efficiency and understanding. All the ones that I mention
here are free and run in Windows.
E-Sword (www.e-sword.net) is
an incredible tool for PC and iPad.
It aids in daily devotions, word
searches, Bible memory, and maintaining a prayer list. Be sure to

and many other versions and languages are free; some modern
Bible translations require purchase of an unlock code. Students
who are learning a foreign language may enjoy reading or
memorizing the Bible in their
target language.
E-Sword offers a customizable
interface and a host of handy features. The “parallel” feature allows the user to see several Bible
versions side-by-side onscreen.
The “copy verses” function allows the user to define a portion
of text (from a single verse up to
an entire Bible book at a time) and
choose the format to use when
pasting the verses into a new

n response to the non-confrontational critics who promote the love of God, but do
not want to talk about the Biblical judgement of Almighty God,
the Bible says in Psalms 9:17,
"The wicked shall be turned into
hell, and all the nations that forget God." Also in Romans 1:28
it says,"And even as they did
not like to retain God in their
knowledge, God gave them over
to a reprobate mind, to do those
things which are not convenient." Iran and North Korea
and their demon-filled leaders
are two countries that fit these
verses without question. As
Sam Jones the Spirit filled evangelist of yesterday said, "If you
do not like what was said just
turn the cat around and stroke
it the other way." If you don't
like that then just go and lay
down like an old hound dog and
howl at the moon.
America has become a nation
with some silly-minded people
in it who believe that the way to
get along with our enemies is to
"go along to get along" with
whatsoever they want us to do.
Hogwash! If you want to live
in some effeminate country
without any moral backbone
then go to Sweden, Denmark,
or France and live there. Our
nation is in very serious trouble
with the sodomites in open rebellion celebrating their wicked
behavior in our armed forces.
President Obama and his leftist
political henchmen are hollow-
ing out the defense budget
which will destroy the preparedness of our standing military.
Obamacare is intimidating American citizens more than our political leaders are intimidating our
enemies.
Now we come to the lunatic
White House nomination for Secretary of Defense, Chuck (Israel
hater) Hagel of Nebraska. The
reason that Obama picked Hagel
is simply because he represents
his radical world view for America
and his contempt for the nation
of Israel. Hagel has said that our
country should negotiate with the
Jew hating terrorist militia of
Hamas. In 2006 Hagel said, "The
Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of
people....I have always argued
against some of the dumb things
they do because I don't think it's
in the interest of Israel. I just don't
think it's smart for Israel." Hagel
fits perfectly into the Obama mold
of promoting the Palestinian state
at the expense of Israel. If Hagel
is confirmed as Secretary of Defense he will be weak in protecting a strong American foreign
policy, he will not aggressively
fight terrorism and our national
security will be at risk. Our nation
cannot afford to pay the price of
an Obama and Hagel team that will
further destroy our military prominence in the world.
Obama is again on the political
rampage threatening to use an
executive order to enforce more
gun control and thereby he will
be bypassing our elected members of Congress. This dictato-
rial and unconstitutional threat
needs to be challenged by Congress before it happens. Speaker
John Boehner and his leadership
team in the House must publicly
warn Obama if he moves to do
such an unconstitutional thing
that impeachment proceedings
will be started against him. Obama
and his leftist thugs are out for
political blood and the Republican-controlled House must understand that they are in an all-out
war for the very soul of America.
From a Georgetown University
Professor to (airhead) Nancy
Pelosi, (moonstruck) Joe Biden,
and the leftists in the media, they
have all recently been fabricating
Obama's authority to use an executive order to implement more
gun control while at the same time
inferring that our Constitution
and the Second Amendment are
outdated. Obama and the Marxist storm troops are setting political fires to the American way of
life and gleefully watching and
fanning the political flames while
they start to engulf the Constitution. Our Constitution is soaked
in the blood of our founding fathers, and we assure the Marxists
that the Second Amendment contained therein gives "the right of
the people to keep and bear arms,"
and we will protect it.

Crowds may gather; but they

rather than to hear the prophet of
God. Seminars are held to train
people how to use and properly
invest their monies and develop
their families; but there are few
that gather in the prayer rooms or
weep upon the altars. We look at
looming edifices that gather
crowds; but we notice little difference in the crowds that gather
there on the weekends than those
that rally in the stands at sporting
events.
Even the most earnest, who often quote God’s promise to Israel,

All of these things caused me

I want His blessing so the

will be reduced so my grandchildren will not owe their adult lives
to pay for government waste? Do
I really desire a spiritual awakening in America that might require
sacrifice on my part and perhaps
on the part of those I love? Can I
with good conscience pray as
Jeremiah did for Judah, “Oh, that
my head were waters, and my eyes
a fountain of tears, that I might
weep day and night for the slain
of the daughter of my people!”
(Jer. 9:1 NKJV)? Am I that concerned for America?
I fear that most of us if we are
honest will have to admit that we
really want some political hero to
come and save us from the direction our country has gone and
make us free again. For the most
part we don't want One to come
who will reveal our sinfulness and
salvation for our needy souls and
Who will assist us in living lives
for Him that will change a society
which has become comfortable
without Him.
That's the way we view things.

Thomas Jefferson - Part 6
“A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth
him before great men.”
(Proverbs 18:16)
“What will you give for the whole of Louisiana?”
(Tallyrand the French foreign minister to Robert Livingston, U.S. ambassador to France)
CHRISTIANITY & AMERICAN HISTORY

P
resident Thomas Jefferson
worried after learning that
Napoleon, the new emperor of
France, had compelled Spain to
secretly retrocede all land between the Mississippi River and
the Rocky Mountains, including
the island of New Orleans, back
to France. Always having allowed
the United States access to the
Mississippi River, Spain had controlled the land since 1762, after
France, the former owner, had
compensated Spain with gift of the
land for her part in the French and
Indian War. Ambassador Robert
Livingston, already in France, was
trying to negotiate some kind of
settlement, but Jefferson was
afraid Livingston’s presented offer would be too miserly, and refused. Fearful of having the turbulent Napoleon as a neighbor,
Jefferson had hurriedly dispatched James Monroe to France
with an official offer of two million dollars, though where the
money would come from, the
President would concern himself
with that matter in due time.
Other than the immediate New
Orleans region, much of the Louisiana Territory had still remained
only curious tracts of land and rivers. The Indians undisputedly still
possessed it, but the thought of
purchase had maximized the quizzical interest of Jefferson, the scientist. As President, he would be
available to bargain with American natives over peaceful negotiations of thousands upon thousands of acres, and inclined if necessary, prevent war and make
concessions on each request. He
observed his makeshift maps and
charts of land beyond the Mississippi, and had reasoned there
was enough space for both white
settlers and the Indians.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Napoleon had hoped he might
replace France’s loss of Canada
with a new French base in North
America, and was proposing to
make France a power in the New
World as in the Old. But because
of his other priorities, he had determined the time inconvenient of
taking immediate possession of
the Louisiana lands. It was his
desire, also, to keep his treaty with
Spain secret, but during “his conjugation with the Iberian Peninsula nation his entente cordiale
had leaked” information to
Jefferson, the American President.
This had occurred in late 1801.
The President had immediately
dispatched a message to Robert
Livingston, the U.S. ambassador
to France, to begin a program to
purchase the island of New Orleans. Receiving further confirmation that Napoleon planned on
being America’s French neighbor,
Jefferson had then dispatched
James Monroe with extreme emergency bargaining measures.
As Monroe had made his way
to
France,
Ambassador
Livingston had begun testing the
waters of negotiation. He began
by using efforts to persuade Napoleon to repay France’s past
debts, French warships having
seized American merchant ships.
Then following this request for
payment of lost ships, he had
made an offer to buy an area at
the mouth of the Mississippi
River, and had insisted that the
French should either grant his requests or guarantee free use of
the river.
Livingston’s correspondence
with French officials had failed to
produce results until after he
learned that his negotiations with
Napoleon through Tallyrand, the
French foreign minister, were being ambushed.
Meanwhile, James Monroe’s
arrival had been providentially
delayed, and Livingston’s circumstances had begun to change.
Tallyrand, envisioning a great future for France in Louisiana, had
negotiated Livingston’s information to the first consul, but had
withheld Jefferson’s offers of purchase. Suffering considerable
delays trying to bypass
Tallyrand, Livingston someway
had finally managed to negotiate
directly with Napoleon.
Pending Monroe’s arrival, Emperor Napoleon had prepared an
appetite for negotiation. But during weeks of delay, his dream of
establishing a staging area at
Santo Domingo for French soldiers and settlers embarking for
Louisiana had suddenly ended
when blacks of Santo Domingo
had again risen up to throw off
the French yoke. To make matters worse, the mighty French
emperor had pushed his country
into war with England. During this
timeframe, should Napoleon have
tried to establish a French Louisiana, it would have presented England constant temptation to attack Louisiana, and claim it her
own. Unwilling to risk chance of
losing everything, Napoleon had
decided to sell Louisiana to the
United States “lock, stock and
barrel.” He had instructed
Tallyrand to offer the Americans
the entire Louisiana Territory at
an unbelievable price. But his
proposal: they should buy all or
nothing.
Livingston had greeted Monroe with this astonishing news
when the American minister to
France had finally arrived in Paris.
Though Jefferson had desired
purchasing New Orleans for two
million up front, he had secretly
commissioned Monroe to offer
anything up to ten million for both
New Orleans and Florida. Should
France refuse Monroe’s initial offer, the President had also given
Monroe an alternate scheme.
Jefferson had agreed to allow
Monroe seven and a half million
to negotiate for New Orleans
alone. But because Napoleon
wanted to be the aggressor in the
negotiations, the French emperor
never heard Jefferson’s final offers. Napoleon had beat Jefferson
to the punch, he desiring to initiate the negotiations of purchase,
had directed Tallyrand to casually
ask Livingston, “What will you
give for the whole of Louisiana?”
Livingston later admitted he had
swallowed
hard
while
nonchalantly suggesting the
United States was willing to pay a
price of four million. “Too low!”
The Frenchman had said. “Reflect and see me tomorrow.”
Livingston and Monroe had done
just as directed.
After completing discussions
on 30 April 1803, the treaty of cession was signed. The Americans
had agreed to pay the equivalent
of about fifteen million for the entire area. Twelve million would be
paid in cash and installments
spread over twenty years. The
United States had also offered to
assume the debt for the naval
damage of 1797-1798, claimed
against France.
Without doubt, the Louisiana
Purchase was the greatest bargain
of land in American history, but it
had not come easy for Jefferson.
He could not enjoy the fantastic
accomplishment made by his administration, though he was certainly pleased with the success
of Monroe and Livingston’s negotiations and John Randolph for
pressuring Congress to obtain so
much land—doubling the size of
what was then the United States.
But Jefferson was troubled by
Federalists’ actions. They were
declaring he had paid twelve million for a scrap of paper—the
title—and claimed apparently defective on several points. Namely,
Bonaparte had promised Spain he
would never dispose of Louisiana
to a third nation. The title had
also no definite boundaries.
Jefferson’s enemies ranted and
raved, claimed that the treaty was
unconstitutional. They accused
the President of overstepping his
power. Though Jefferson cared
little what his enemies thought or
said, he was troubled with his own
inconsistencies, having had to
exert executive power beyond the
limits of the Constitution. In his
own words, he had “done an act
beyond the Constitution.” Always, he had opposed giving excess power to the federal government not specifically granted in
the Constitution. He knew well
that the supreme law of the land
said nothing about the Executive
branch of the federal government
having power to purchase territory from a foreign nation.
Though it was in his mind to draft
an amendment, there was no time.
His advisers warned him that an
amendment would take weeks,
even months, and Napoleon might
withdraw the offer.
Jefferson’s concerns about the
Constitution had vanished after
receiving a letter from Livingston,
demanding immediate ratification
before Napoleon had chance to
retract his offer. Jefferson immediately drew up the treaty of purchase and sent it to the Senate.
There in Congress and with furnished assistance, Randolph and
friends had provided a taste of the
Federalist party’s own ramrod-like
tactics, rushing the bill through
and getting it ratified on 30 November 1803.
Three weeks later, the Louisiana Territory had become the possession of the United States. At
the time, though the Louisiana
Purchase was the single most important territorial acquisition during America’s transcontinental
development, little was known of

beautiful voice, as well as dedication to sing the message of
Jesus Christ. Possessing an unbelievably smooth and polished
alto voice that has a refined
sound, Lily Fern has been described by many of her peers as
the best female singer ever on
the professional circuit. She is
a pattern which young singers
can model after.
Lily Fern is best known for
songs such as “What A Precious Friend Is He” (written by
Henry Slaughter, one-time pianist for the Weatherfords), “He’s
The Lily Of The Valley,” “Tenderly,” and “Footprints Of

new heights of popularity as a
result of her appearances on the
Gather videos. Lily Fern has received many awards for her
musical ability. She was given
an Honorary Doctorate degree
in Music from Oakland City University in Indiana.
Lily Fern and her late husband Earl, who formed the
Weatherfords Quartet in 1944,
began singing together in 1949
and this group has been singing in some form since that beginning. As a group there have
been many accolades given including membership into the

from the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion. This group style is much
like the personality of Lily Fern
filled with dignity, class and reverence. Lily Fern is quick to point
out that ministry, not entertainment, has always been the top
priority of the Weatherfords.
Although Earl and Lily Fern
were both from Oklahoma they did
not meet until they both were living in California. In 1951 after a
few stops in between they landed
in Akron, Ohio, where they became staff members of The Cathedral of Tomorrow. Through the
widespread radio and television
ministry of its pastor, Reverend
Rex Humbard, the Weatherfords
gained national exposure. Some
years later this same program became the springboard for another
group, which most everyone is
familiar with, The Cathedrals.
Some names are you sure to recognize who sang with the
Weatherfords are Glen Payne,
Armond Morales (who also
sing with The Blue Ridge Quartet), George Younce and Jim
Hamill just to name a few. Earl
passed away in 1992 but Lily
Fern and Steve, her son, continue to carry on today with the
same zest for singing that they
always had and, as you might
imagine, Lily Fern remains the
focal point of the group. Each
year The Weatherfords spend
time during the winter months
in Florida performing all across
the state.

the territory. Jefferson most certainly was aware that the purchase
would give the new nation a corridor down the Mississippi River
to the Gulf of Mexico; but the
width of the purchased land was
purely speculative. The acquisition of this enormous tract of land,
its boundaries and limits later determined in treaties with Great Britain and Spain, would play an integral and huge part in the material
foundation for the United States’
future greatness, allowing free
navigation of the Missouri and
Mississippi rivers and consummate control of the New Orleans
port, and all vital to western trade.
The purchase had additionally
reinforced security for the growing new Republic, and eliminating Napoleon’s quest to dominate
North America.

If words were limited, the one
word that had best described the
characteristic instrument of Thomas Jefferson is “curiosity”.
Jefferson had the inquisitive mind
of a scientist, the imaginative
dreams of a schoolboy. His father had died when Jefferson was
only fourteen, yet the boy had
learned many skills while the elder Jefferson lived. Through attentiveness of the father to the
young boy’s desire of knowledge,
young Thomas had breathed into
him growing experiences of farming, hunting, fishing and reading
books, which had cultivated and
filled his mind with curiosity.
It was one day on a hillside of
his father’s some 2,750 acres,
while reading, that Jefferson had
envisioned the building of his
home, Monticello. True to his vision, he had later built that home
of his dreams, and had drawn the
plans himself. With assistance of
slaves, he had assembled a spectacular and beautiful home that
still stands today as a testimony
of Classic Revival style with
French features. It was only one
of many houses designed by
Jefferson that had displayed
“gadgets” or novel features. Notably, his house design was the

close their eyes to the denial of a
Southern Christian Minister to

quoted the Bible some twenty
years ago. And to complicate the
issue even more, those who
planned this moment would drag

a unique opportunity for us taxpayers to recover some of our tax

In the wake of this unprecedented security disaster, the
state has provided us with free

lifetime fraud resolution. But security expert and South Carolina
resident (and inspiration for the
movie “Catch Me If You Can”)
Frank Abagnale recommends that
we all continue to pay for credit
monitoring for more than a year
because none of these cyber

within the first year. They wait a
few years and then they sell it.
So, for whatever these services
are worth, the state is giving us
some “free” security tools. But
they’re not really free. The state
is buying them with our money.
It’s not as though the state government makes any money on its
own. It only has what it takes from
us in taxes. The bill for the security we’ve been promised so far is
already at $12 million. If they de-
cide to provide us with any more

protect us) that number will go up.
How is the state going to pay
for this?
A couple of ideas have been
proposed by the State Treasurer’s
Office to cover the costs until
state lawmakers go back into session. One is to let the Department
of Revenue run a deficit, so it
could pay the bills until state lawmakers pass a new spending plan.
Another suggestion is to have the
state loan the money to the Department of Revenue. But why are
we talking about loans or running
deficits when, according to the
State Auditor’s Office, the state
already has over a billion dollars
in taxpayer dollars available in
their piggy bank?
Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars are spread throughout our state government agencies and institutions as unrestricted net assets – surplus resources that can be used for any
purpose. As of June 30th, 2011,
the Governor’s Office had about
$5 million in unrestricted net assets. The State of South Carolina
has $1.5 billion. There’s plenty
more socked away throughout
various agencies and all of that is
in addition to the state’s two rainy
day funds (the General Reserve
Fund and the Capital Reserve
Fund).
Our state government has literally taken more of our money than
it knows what to do with. At least
now some of that money can be
put to good use for the taxpayer.
Spend some of those assets on
cyber security for the taxpayers
who have had their identities and
the identities of their children put
at risk.
Of course, this is less than ideal.
Ideally, our government wouldn’t
take more of our money than it
knew what to do with. Ideally, taxpayers wouldn't have to have
their identities compromised before they could see their tax dollars again. Ideally, when the government “saved” money, that
money would go back to the taxpayer instead of back into the
government.
The problem isn’t just that the
state government is hoarding our
money, but that, when determining what to do with these surplus
funds, returning them to the taxpayer isn’t even considered.
South Carolina needs to lower
our state taxes, which are among
the highest in the nation, and create a taxpayer rebate fund so that
budget surpluses go back to the
Think PreK-14: Early College
High Schools + Tech Colleges =
Win/Win/Win for South Carolina
Students, Businesses & State
GUEST COLUMN
s a proponent of economic
opportunity for all, I am
thinking PreK-14 education. If we
don’t create a knowledge-based
workforce with at least a PreK-14
education – an associate degree
equivalency, I am afraid that South
Carolina is going to lose its economic development attraction for
knowledge-based companies. I
believe Greenville County public
schools and Greenville Tech can
model a solution for the state!
Greenville County is fortunate
that many knowledge-based, high
impact companies are choosing to
expand or locate here. They are
hiring skilled people for high paying jobs. The sad truth is that our
companies must recruit outside
SC to find all the qualified employees they need.
In order to continue to be attractive to high tech, high skill
companies, we need a highly prepared labor force. Too many students fail to graduate from high
school, and too many high school
graduates are not prepared for
available jobs or need remedial
education before college.
I believe the key to achieving a
qualified local workforce in a short
time is to establish PreK-14 as the
goal for all students in Greenville
and the Upstate. PreK-14 thinking means a student wouldn’t target only a 12th grade diploma, but
they would aim to complete one
or two years beyond high school
before entering senior college or
a full-time position toward a high
impact, high salary career.
I suggest we pursue several
goals:
1) Create a PreK-14 mentality.
Every student plans a post-high
school curriculum with their high
school and technical college counselors. Technical colleges like
Greenville Tech offer the best opportunity for PreK-14 partnerships with high quality, low cost,
high value courses easily accessible to most students aiming to
complete an associate degree on
the road to a 4-year or graduate
degree. Greenville has some wonderful PreK-14 models with three
“Early College” Charter Schools
(Greenville Tech, Brashier, and
Greer offering grades 9-14; plus
Legacy Charter on-target for PreK14). Build on these successful
models!
2) Reduce dropouts in all our
public schools. Wade Hampton
High School (WHHS) is exemplary. WHHS recently reduced
dropouts by 20% in 4 years - moving WHHS’s graduation rate from
65% to 85%. Let’s promote WHHS
success factors and duplicate
them in every high school. But
let’s aim higher – complete one
Tech certificate or associate degree in a local PreK-14 partnership
before transferring to a job or senior college.
3) Increase STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art and
Math) Centers within PreK-14
partnerships, re-brand career centers as STEAM academies, and
maximize technical college
STEAM resources. STEAM students would take dual high
school/ college credit courses.
Some Tech STEAM courses prepare graduates for local high tech
jobs where current demand outstrips supply.
4) Enhance internships and apprenticeships to bridge STEAM
students with local companies
and workforce needs. “Hands on”
experience motivates students to
excel in both academic and work
arenas. Promote scheduling
blocks of student time in modular
academic classes and labs plus
equal time in actual work environments. Expand existing partnerships for increased connections
to occur quickly.
5) Emphasize four-year college
programs that focus on completing baccalaureate degrees. USC
Upstate offers a completely articulated curriculum with GTC at
the University Center and other
colleges also offer similar degree
completion options.
I believe a PreK-14 mentality
will encourage more students to
complete high school and reduce
the drop-out rate by allowing students to take skills courses of their
choice. Promoting PreK-14 education leads to certificate and associate degrees, is preparation for
a job, and is a bridge to a senior
college degree. PreK-14 is a giant
step in raising our percentage of
adults with an AAS, BS, or higher,
reducing unemployment, and raising average per capita incomes.
PreK-14 produces more graduates
who are ready for today’s
workforce jobs, and better satisfies industry demands for a higher
quality, more skilled workforce.
Greenville County School Superintendent Burke Royster and
Greenville Tech President Keith
Miller reviewed these ideas with
me. Both described examples of
existing cooperative efforts and
expressed intentions to expand
PreK-14 opportunities for all
Greenville students. Everyone
needs to understand and support
their plans to improve PreK-14
education.
Sam Walton said, “High expectations are the key to everything.”
In South Carolina, current K-12
expectations are too low.
Let’s aim for PreK-14 graduates
who are prepared for senior college and better paying jobs. Improved education achievements
will accelerate economic development, increase family income levels; and reduce crime, health problems, and other negative social
costs. We must win these battles.

... continued from Page 8
What Jesus was doing was assuring Simon Peter that the tyrannical Roman and Jewish forces
that were now using the sword
against Him would one day themselves be destroyed by the sword,
but that it would not be Simon’s
sword that would be the one to
do this. In other words, Jesus was
stating a divine principle that tyrants and despots who unjustly
rule with the power of the sword
would one day be brought to the
judgment of the sword.
Jesus’ statement had nothing
to do with Christians disarming
themselves in the face of tyrants;
it had everything to do with God’s
pronouncement of judgment
upon tyrants who force their will
on people by the power of the
sword. He was saying, “Those
who ruthlessly rule and govern
by the sword will be brought to
justice by the sword.” THAT is
what Jesus said.
Did Jesus’ promise come true?
You bet it did. A few years later,
the Jewish nation was destroyed
by the Roman sword; and a few
years after that, the Roman nation
was destroyed by the sword of
the Goths, et al.
This promise to tyrants is repeated by the Apostle John in
Revelation 13:10. Here Jesus inspired John to write, “He that
leadeth into captivity shall go into
captivity: he that killeth with the
sword must be killed with the
sword. Here is the patience and
the faith of the saints.”
The context of Revelation 13:10
is unmistakable: those who put
men into captivity by force shall
themselves be put into captivity
by force; those who kill with the
sword shall themselves be killed
with the sword. John then adds:
“Here is the patience and the faith
of the saints.” In other words, the
victimized, terrorized saints can
take comfort in the fact that God
will send His judgment to the oppressors in the like manner in
which they oppressed others.
What John said in Revelation
13:10 was a repeat of what He had
heard Jesus say in Matthew 26:52.
Jesus telling Peter to put up his
sword has absolutely nothing to
do with Christians willingly surrendering their arms to an oppressive government. Instead, it is a
promise to oppressors that if you
live and rule by the sword, you
will die by the sword!

my sword.”
When on May 23, the citizens
of Virginia ratified the Secession
Ordinance of April 17 by a popular vote of 132,201 to 37,451; Lee
became a Major General in the
Confederate Army and was made
Confidential Military Advisor to
President Jefferson Davis.
Plans were already underway to
move the Confederate Capital from
Montgomery to Richmond. There
may have been many strong political reasons for moving the capital to Richmond, but it placed the
seat of Confederate government
under constant threat by large
concentrations of Union troops
with short supply lines to Washington. It therefore limited Confederate defensive and offensive
options.
Within a few months, two
smashing Confederate victories
demoralized the North and lifted
Southern hopes to unrealistic levels. On June 10, 1,400 Confederate troops soundly defeated a
Union force of nearly 7,000 at Big
Bethel Church near the town of
And since Jesus had commanded them to do so, we can
assume that His disciples carried
their own personal arms for the
rest of their lives. Yes, yes, I realize that the disciples allowed themselves to be martyred for their
faith. They CHOSE to not “accept
deliverance,” (Hebrews 11:35) as
did the famed missionary, Jim
Elliott, who was armed at the time
of his death, and, therefore, was
fully capable of defending himself
against the savages that attacked
him, but CHOSE to not defend
himself, and thereby accepted the
martyr’s death. But these examples have nothing to do with
the divine principle of lawful selfdefense, which Jesus duly recognized in His instructions to His
disciples.
Pray tell, how did Gideon deliver God’s people from their oppressors? By “the sword of the
Lord and of Gideon.” How did
Samson throw off the tyrants of
his people? How did Barak and
Jephthah defeat Israel’s enemies?
By the sword! And note that each
of these deliverers were commissioned and empowered by God to
use the sword to destroy those
tyrants that had ruled by the
power of the sword. This was
God’s promised judgment on oppressors for thousands of years
before Jesus uttered this eternal
truism in the Garden of
Gethsemane.
The Second Amendment guarantee that “the right of the people
to keep and bear arms shall not be
infringed” is as much a sacred
right as it is an American right.
The principle of armed self-defense is rooted in both Natural
and Revealed Law. That Barack
Obama and Dianne Feinstein
want to strip the American people
of this right should be met with
the most vociferous resistance,
and that includes FROM CHRISTIANS!
Yet, all across America, pastors
and Christians seem to be willing
to sheepishly surrender their Second Amendment rights. Some are
no doubt sincere; they are only
reacting as their Christian mentors
and leaders have told them is
right to do. Others are no doubt
using Scripture as a covering for
their own cowardice.
But for those Christians who
seek truth and genuinely desire
to know how they should respond to this current attack
against our Second Amendment
liberties, my son, Tim, and I are in
the process of producing a brand
new book entitled “To Keep Or
Not To Keep: Why Christians
Should Not Give Up Their Guns.”
This book is designed to equip
Christians with the scriptural tools
and knowledge they will need to
make wise decisions about the
defense of their family. We are
working hard to have this book
ready for release by early spring.
Readers may pre-order this
brand new book NOW and thus
be assured of obtaining the very
first copies of what is sure to be a
blockbuster book. To order, go to:
http://keepyourarms.com/.
And please remember that the
book should be available by early
spring.
I say once again: regardless of
what laws are passed or not
passed, I refuse to register or surrender my firearms–even if doing
so makes me an outlaw. But as
several readers pointed out to me:
in such a scenario, I am not the
outlaw; the ones who would try
to disarm me are the outlaws. As I
would not submit to a law that
demanded that I surrender my
spiritual sword (the Bible), neither
will I submit to a law that demands
that I surrender my physical
sword (my firearms).
What Simon Peter told the Jewish leaders in Acts 5, after being
ordered to surrender his preaching of truth, applies to any order
of men that violates God’s eternal
law–including the right of the
people (including Christian
people) to keep and bear arms:
“We ought to obey God rather
than men.” And so we ought!

On July 21, massive Union and
Confederate forces of about
35,000 each collided near
Manassas, Virginia. Northern
public clamor and political pressures were at high pitch by midJuly to defeat the Confederate
Army and take Richmond. Lincoln
gave the assignment to Brigadier
General Irvin McDowell.
McDowell did not believe his
troops were ready, but coaxed by
Lincoln, he proceeded, against his
own better judgment, toward Bull
Run Creek and the Confederate
Army posted to intercept his advance to Richmond. The Confederates under Brigadier General P.
G. T. Beauregard, advancing from
near the Manassas railroad junction, planned to strike first by
flanking McDowell’s left.
McDowell preempted Beauregard,
however, with his own planned
flank of Beauregard’s left, but it
was poorly executed by his inexperienced troops. Nevertheless,
McDowell seemed to have won a
slight advantage due to Confederate confusion. But Confederate reinforcements under General
Joe Johnston arrived by rail from
the Shenandoah Valley and
quickly intervened. The tide of
battle changed about noon, when
Union troops were unable to advance against one of Johnston’s
Virginia brigades commanded by
Colonel Thomas J. Jackson. Thus
evolved the nickname, “Stonewall.” for both Jackson and his
brigade.
As Union troops began to withdraw from Jackson’s “stone wall,”
Jackson ordered his five regiments
to fix bayonets and charge. His
famous words were:

Confederates brought up their
close-action smooth-bore artillery
and began to shred Union infantry. These developments turned
the Union withdrawal into a disorderly panic streaming toward
Washington. This was the largest battle ever fought on American soil until that date.
Lee had played a major role in
organizing and training Virginia
troops prior to Manassas, but he
was left in Richmond to agonize
as others rode into battle. On July
28, Lee was sent to western Virginia to advise and coordinate the
restructuring of Brigadier General
Robert S. Garnett’s brigade of
2,300 men, who had been badly
defeated at Laurel Hill. Garnett was
himself killed in action. Lee found
the new commander, Brigadier
General W.W. Loring, however, to
be resentful, surly, and uncooperative. Having only advisory authority, Lee tried gentlemanly diplomacy, but it did not work well
with Loring.
On August 31, however, Lee,
Adjutant General Samuel Cooper,
Albert Sidney Johnston, and P. T.
G. Beauregard were made full generals, joining Joseph E. Johnston
at that rank. Lee was given a date
of rank senior to Beauregard and
Joe Johnston, causing some resentment by the latter. Loring’s
attitude improved but not sufficiently.
On September 15-17, Lee tried
to coordinate an attack on Union
troops at Cheat Mountain. But
bad intelligence, bad weather,
poor communications from Loring,
and measles, dysentery, other
sicknesses affecting half the Confederate troops, caused Lee to
break off the attack after about 120
casualties and withdraw. Lee then
went to the Kanawha River Valley
to help two small forces under rival political Brigadier Generals
John B. Floyd and H. A. Wise. The
two were so quarrelsome and jealous and of each other that cooperation was poor. Lee reconciled
them to their duty, but much time
was lost. As a result, an opportunity to strike a blow against an
advancing Union force was lost
before the Confederate forces
were able to act.
Although Lee never had direct
authority over the troops in western Virginia, he returned to Richmond with all the blame of Cheat
Mountain and Kanawha Valley on
his shoulders. The Richmond
newspapers made sure that burden was heavy. But Providence
was about to start Lee on a path
that would make him the most respected and admired general in
American history.

and will make an appearance in a
high-profile ad for pistachios during the Super Bowl.
At a Hong Kong awards show
last month, Chan and PSY met for
the first time. It was a mutual admiration society. "You are the legend," Chan said to PSY as a young
audience cheered on. "One day
you can make your dream come
up. All the young people, never
give up. One day your dream may
come true, just like him. So proud
of you."
"Yankees" -- especially those
whose parents came to the United
States from all parts of Asia seeking freedom from tyranny -should shun these exploitative
peas in an anti-American pod.
They don't speak for me.

GENERALS
... continued from Page 3
Doug Langley introduced him.
McKenney, a Vietnam War veteran and author of several books
on various topics spoke about his
latest book that required 15 years
to research.
The book titled Jack Hinson’s
One-Man War was the story of a
Kentucky farmer whose two sons
were murdered by a Union officer.
Hinson had remained neutral and
refrained from becoming involved
in the war, however, a Union of-
ficer brutally oversaw the murder
of his two sons, and he spent the
remainder of the war as a sniper,
and killed at least 38 Union officers with his special made 50 cal.
rifle.
Hinson lived in a cave and was
never injured or captured by
Union troops. McKenney spent
years interviewing people regarding the activities of Hinson, eventually he was able to locate a few
relatives. Some of them were helpful; others were reluctant to speak
and took what they knew to their
graves. Sixteenth Regiment Com-
mander David Wright gave the
oath of office to six officers to
serve during 2013. Wright will continue to serve his 2-year term as
commander. First Lt. Commander
is Douglas Langley, Second Lt.
Commander Haywood Hitt, Adjutant Danny Durham, Asst. Adjutant Keith Pike, Chaplain Mark
Evans and Color Sergeant Robert
Bolt, Jr.
Following retirement of the colors and Benediction by Chaplain
Evans, Past Commander Terry
Grissop led the Lee/Jackson celebrants singing Dixie’s Land.

traveled from his home in Delaware to lead the festivities. Steven
