May 2015 This letter is being made available to parents of all students in grades nine, ten and eleven. The purpose of this letter is to alert parents to summer school opportunities should students have the need to make-up courses over the summer. Students are encouraged to make-up failed courses in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English over the summer to ensure grade level status. Grades are available online through the Home Access Center. Additionally, parents will be notified of failures. Remedial Summer School (make-up courses): Students falling into this category must attend 60 hours of summer school or 30 hours of individual tutoring. 1. The course final average must be 40% or above. 2. All course requirements must have been completed. 3. The final examination must have been taken. 4. The student must have completed all obligations established by the attendance office for absences or lateness’s. 5. The student wishes to improve a grade in a course which was previously passed. Original Credit Summer School: Students in this category must attend 120 hours of summer school or 60 hours of individual tutoring. 1. The course final average is less than 40%, and/or the student failed to complete one or more of the course requirements and/or attendance requirements. 2. The student has never taken the course previously and wishes to accelerate his/her regular course of study. The student’s final transcript will show both grades, if the course was taken previously. We have included a list of summer school possibilities (see reverse side). This year Educere, an online provider, has been added as an option for either remediation or original credit during the summer. You should call the numbers listed for specific information. Please notify the Guidance Office at (215) 706-2382 regarding any summer courses or tutoring in which your child is enrolled so that the necessary roster adjustments can be made. If you elect to have your child attend a summer school or tutor on this list, pre-approval must be obtained from the counselor. Sincerely, The High School Guidance Department The Summer School dates and times may vary from each school. Please call the schools for information and registration. Please make sure your student has the appropriate (make-up and original) credits when they attend any of these summer school sessions.
