Educational Roundtable Sessions
3. Retail Design in the Global Market
11:00 am – 12:00 noon
Harmony Ballroom, Four Seasons Hotel
This session explores the nature of built retail environments in
different parts of the world, focusing on regional design
strategies and understanding what makes them tick. We will
discuss key design principles that make for a better shopping
experience.
Stay where you are after the opening general session and join in
the roundtable discussions with leading experts in the industry.
Roundtable topics include:
ROUNDTABLE LEADER
1. Omni-Channel Retailing and Percentage Rent
AJAY SHAH
In-store and online commerce are no longer direct competitors
and the elimination of the line between the two is the wave of
the future. Retail leases typically contain percentage rent
provisions that are based on gross sales. How do ship-fromstore, in-store pick-up, e-commerce orders from stores and ecommerce returns at stores impact percentage rent
calculations? We will discuss why retailers and landlords should
negotiate for such items in leases.

4. Still Using the Same Old Marketing Techniques
in this New Retail Era?
This session will focus on:
• Balancing brand-building strategies with traffic-driving tactics
• Determining which tools are best for your brand's image,
your operational requirements...and, more importantly, your
customers' needs
• Making your brand more approachable & personable
• Creating a more engaging in-store (or on-location) experience

2. Retail Development on First Nations Land
ANDREW SHARPE
The availability of vacant land for retail development is becoming
scarce in many parts of the country; however, as First Nations look
to develop a sustainable economy that will generate economic
and social advantages, new opportunities are being presented.
Come and talk about some of the issues and challenges that are
involved with the development of Tsawwassen Commons, a
550,000 sq.ft. destination power centre located on TFN lands,
immediately adjacent to Ivanhoé Cambridge’s Tsawwassen Mills'
1.2M sq.ft. shopping centre development, also located on TFN.
PDG has undertaken a number of shopping centre projects on
First Nation lands and will share some of their experiences as a
developer.

5. ICSC Market Data –
A Wealth of Information at Your Fingertips
Sometimes the world of data can seem like either feast or
famine – "big data" yet scarce resources with which to make
sense of it! In this session, participants will be taken through
the data available to ICSC members via the online research and
data tools. From provincial and municipal information on mall
performance to macro-economic data and reports and
everything in between, it's probably available for free – if you
know where to look.
